believe it or not eagles rate him :thumbsup
good luck to the kid i reckon
Agreed, I hope he makes plenty of people eat their words

Yeah, Lets hope its not another Roden FK Up. LOL.

Have this gut feel about JON that nags away.
His time was well and duly up at Tigerland, but all the same :-\
-
We can't be concerned about delisting players and other clubs picking them up. Better to let them go than hang onto them for years for zero return as we've done in the past. JON has too many deficiencies and flaws in his game to make it at AFL. Sheesh he even struggled at VFL level. 4 years was way more than enough to know he had to go.

JON's kicking technique is seriously flawed. He has a far too open technique which means the ball takes too long to get from hand to foot and he always kicks with a bent knee. Under pressure it falls apart. Even under no pressure it isn't that reliable either. What you saw during games was no different to what we saw at training as far as missing targets regularly under no pressure. He also lacked awareness and as a result his decision making was terrible. He totally lacked the know-how that natural footballers have. JON is one of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet '65 and I wish him the best for the future in whatever he does but he simply isn't an AFL standard footballer. The Club made the right call on this one. He was only picked up late in the rookie draft.

I only met him once, a school visit with Patrica Bowden, and found him a very likable young man.
Hope he does well.

From JON's press conference yesterday.......
Oakley-Nicholls happy to be home
westcoasteagles.com.au
Anna Carew-Reid | Tue 15 December, 2009
The powerful link between the West Coast Eagles and one of its greatest ever players was rekindled today with the club’s final pick in the AFL rookie draft.
The club secured Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, a nephew of dual premiership hero Chris Lewis with selection 53. The 21-year-old is finally at the club he supported so fervently as a kid, adorning his bedroom walls with posters of his uncle and football hero who played 215 games after joining the club’s inaugural list in 1987.
Oakley-Nicholls could not have been happier with his second chance after being delisted by Richmond at the end of this season.
Originally from East Perth, he was snared by the Tigers at selection eight in the national ballot of 2005, but the fast-paced midfielder managed just 13 games after his 2006 debut, ravaged by injuries over the ensuing four years.
The new Eagle is thrilled to be back in WA and believes his best footy is ahead of him.
“It’s good to get another opportunity. I was disappointed with my run at Richmond and I was hoping that someone would give me another crack and thankfully West Coast has given me another opportunity, so it’s good,” Oakley-Nicholls said.
“A few injuries troubled me and I just found that I didn’t get as much opportunity as I would hope for. You can make up excuses, but I wasn’t playing the footy I knew I could play over there.
“It’s good to be back, I’ve been over there (Melbourne) for four years now, so I’m back home and around family and friends and I reckon I’ll play my best footy now. Just being around family and I’ve played all my junior footy over here so I know the grounds. They’re nice big open grounds that suit my strengths so it’s good.
“I’m probably more happy and excited now than I was when I first got drafted because I thought I was gone, but now I know that I’m right and I’ve just got to knuckle down and play some good footy, put my hand up I suppose, and just show other people what I can do.”
Oakley-Nicholls has been talking regularly to his childhood hero and sees Lewis as an important football role model as he reignites his career.
“I’ve been back home for three months now so I’ve been over to see Chris and chatted to him. I look up to him, I’ve always looked up to him as a footy player.
“The club has always been in my heart, even when I got drafted by Richmond I always watched out for the Eagles because my whole family goes for them and they’re always in your ear about them. Now I’ve finally got the chance to pull on an Eagles jumper and I’m just going to put my head down and work hard.”

Tiger on the loose
AMONG the Tiger throng there appears to be a growing fear the delisting of the club's pick eight in the 2005 national draft, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, might come back to hurt them. Some obviously have been be fazed by what ``JON'' has been saying back in Perth where he has been given a second chance by West Coast. He claims he is happier now than when he was first drafted; he is ready to knuckle down, put his hand up and show other people what he can do. Oakley-Nicholls, who is 21, has also been talking to his long-time mentor, uncle Chris Lewis, about reigniting his career that stalled after 13 games.
-
Even if he shines at the Weagles which is highly unlikely, he was never going to be a decent player at the Tiges.
And as for Rodan biting us, what a load of crap.

West Coast Eagle learns to fly

RICHMOND'S dumped former first-round draft pick Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls is thriving at West Coast after the Eagles discovered he had profound learning difficulties that were holding him back on the field.
The maligned former Tiger has received intensive literacy and comprehension tutoring under a league-first program led by West Coast's indigenous liaison officer Phil Narkle.
West Coast is the first club to appoint a full-time staff member to work with Aboriginal players.
The Eagles were unaware of the literacy problem when they drafted the 22-year-old, but have since watched the utility flourish in recent months.
Narkle said Oakley-Nicholls, who played 13 games during four unproductive years at Punt Rd, was feeling comfortable and enjoying his footy again and is in line for promotion to the senior list this season.
The Eagles stunned many when they took a punt on Oakley-Nicholls with their final selection in last year's rookie draft.
"I sensed that Jarrad was not right when he first came to the club," Narkle said.
"With academic problems some people, and not just indigenous people, can close up shop and not put their hand up and explain what issues they may have.
"It's an embarrassment for them and there's a shame factor involved. The fact is that some kids, indigenous and non-indigenous, need help with literacy and numeracy skills sometimes.
"But he's on top of it and I'm explaining to coaches within our program that sometimes when you show young players graphs and game styles or whatever, it might mean nothing to them. You might have to draw what you are trying to explain."
Narkle said Oakley-Nicholls was "tense" upon arriving at the Eagles.
But the skilful flanker, drafted to Richmond with pick No. 8 in 2005, has since relished the move back home to WA.
The childhood West Coast fan is a nephew of dual-premiership player Chris Lewis.
The 186cm speedster finished up his time at Richmond in disappointing fashion playing VFL and was criticised for his on-field demeanour.
"One of the things I said was that you need to loosen up a bit brother, smile a little bit," Narkle said. "And he is."
Oakley-Nicholls also had a plate removed from his arm pre-Christmas which is said to have caused him serious aggravation at Richmond.

Crap, it did not stop him making the same stupid decisions and getting cleaned up big time more than once in his first game for the Eagles. If that is so true then how have previous Indiginous players cope. ???

It isn't saying all 'indiginous' players have learning difficulties it is saying some 'people' have learning difficulties. My brother had the same thing. You have to use a different approach to explaining things to them, (show, don't tell). He may not of been understanding the game plans and been too embarrassed to speak up for looking a fool. It was pretty sharp of the Eagles to pick this up. I hope he kicks on, it was a shame we didn't figure it out because we may very well of given away a gifted player. Granted, we are a football club and these are not normally things one would expect a club to be looking out for.
-
If he in the unlikely event he flourishes we can put it down as another black mark against Wallet's inability to develop young players.
-
I think most players would have needed to be Rhodes Scholars to understand Wallace's whiteboard.

Trust me on this Owl, your brother may have had it, but I also worked with people with it for 25 yeras including training them so I know what it is. Regardless, what I was saying is I still don't believe he has got the skills and if they are going to use this excuse then time will tell. You dont have learning dificulties when you get smashed off the ball or kick over your players head to the opposition....... continually.
-
Wat, I was responding to your, "If that is so true then how have previous Indiginous players cope." . I am assuming you don't don't really believe that all indiginous people have serious learning disabilities. I will also point out that the frustration and embarrassment that people experience when they are dealing with this can lead to a lot of other negative behavior and low self esteem. It is a vicious cycle. The fact of the matter is, once my brother found his niche he proved to be quite the achiever, he corrected his inability to read and hasn't looked back. I hope Jon does too, because noone deserves to be shitcanned for something beyond their control. :cheers

A mate who watches both Freo and West Coast train ;), says that he is flying .
I said turn it up, he cant play.
He begs to differ, we will see.

I hope he makes it and shuts up the doubters

Yeah i know what you were saying and doing Owl and I wasnt poocanning him.. :). I also was not saying all or any indiginous people are like that. I was just mearly saying that reagrdless of what he may have or not have I still don't think he is AFL level due to a number of reasons other that the mentioned one. :thumbsup

Did you want him to stay at the club Infamy and if so based on what, btw, isn't he the one that said he never did the best he could at the RFC but now he is back with his family it will change. Gee did he give us a good go then??

No, it was the right decision to let him go, should never have been picked in the first place to be honest.
However given the way some of our supporters have acted towards him, I'd be more than happy for him to become successful and stick it up them.
Doing so would clearly highlight the failure of our club to develop him as a player, but we knew we were crap at that anyway

Some players just dont fit into certain teams & l reckon JON was one of them
He could be a superstar at another club & good luck to him if he does.
However l think with his under development over several years & his lack of games at Richmond at senior AFL level
l feel it would have damaged his chances of becoming a consistant player at league level.

Interesting post on tiger-talk from a mate of mine who lives in WA:
What a crock of poo. The son of one of my colleagues at work went to
school with JON from year 5 to year 11 and he said that JON had no
difficulty reading writing or understanding his work. May have not been
the brightest bulb in the Xmas tree but he could still manage his work.
He managed to get through every grade without having to repeat at a
reputable school. More journalistic crap to make the FWCE (premiers
2010, 2011, 2012,2013 and provide the triple brownlow medalist) look
good.

I know a bloke who ran his own courier business for a few years that was illiterate. Sometimes people with such problems find ways to mask and work around their problems.
I wouldnt take much credence from a teenager's observations about another student with something like this.

We also heard he was flying at training more than once.
Then he gets on the paddock and is a spud.

That's very true Al but by the same token you wouldn't think an adult who has been able to cope/mask their way successfully through Year 11 would then have "profound learning difficulties" that prevented him from playing football to any significant degree. It didn't prevent him from performing well at VFL level on many occasions.
-
We are a lot better off without him.
I don't think I have one memory of him as a player.
I have got some of him trying to be a player. :wallywink
-
From memory JON had a stellar pre season last year or the year before.
Never brought it on match day.
Lovely guy but just gets match jitters. Only experience can cure this.

I don't remember him having an amazing full preseason, I think he only had one where he was actually fit for the whole time.
I do remember one intra-club match at Yarra Park where he actually showed some amazing agility weaving in and out of traffic, thought maybe it had finally clicked, however I don't think he ever showed that again.
He definitely did show some good courage and defensive skills at Coburg, he just couldn't step up to AFL level.
I do remember one beautiful piece of vision against Melbourne where he spotted Riewoldt on the opposite side of the forward 50 and kicked an absolute bullet pass from the left wing on to Riewoldt's chest 45m out in the right forward flank. If only we saw more of that.

I only saw the one NAB cup game where JoN played and whilst a few times he was sold into trouble I was surprised with a few of the things he did that I didn't think he was capable of.
Like I said whilst he is right up against it, if he makes it Wallace & co. will have more to answer for..

Well we all know how that turned out. I was there the day JON looked really good during the intra-club, didn't have anything close to that for the rest of the pre-season. I'd suggest Mr King's prediction was more one of hope than based on fact.
-
For JON's life and post-footy career in general it's good if any literacy deficiencies have been picked up. However to use that as an excuse for failing at Richmond is perplexing. Literacy doesn't make up for a poor kicking technique which falls apart even more under any game pressure. If JON "was flying" as the Herald-Sun claimed then the Eagles would've promoted him off the rookie list. I'm glad for JON that this was picked up but it seems the article was written mainly as a cheap dig at Richmond on a slow news day.

As for people not remembering anything special of JON....correct me if i am wrong buy ddint he kick the winning point against the bombers at a Dreamtime game (possibly his first year/first game).
Lovely kid, with a great attitude. I wish him all the best at WCE. I hope they can develop him, in ways that we never seemed to be able.
Lets hope we dont repeat this mistake with the current crop.

Yes yes and yes, thats what I have been trying to say.
BTW a lot of posters keep going on about how we are so bad at developing young players, really are we that bad?? What about Foley, Thursfield and so far Nason, Martin, Roberts?? I dont think we are that bad, well not as bad as many are making out. Also, what about other clubs, do you think the Hawks were bad at developing players when they let one G Ablett go?? C'mon people we are no worse than the rest of the clubs that let young players go and the end up doing well at other clubs.
Lets wait and see how JON goes in the season proper eh.

FORGOTTEN Eagle Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls says he will approach the NAB Cup opener as though it was a home-and-away match and is desperate to play every pre-season game to prove his worth.
"When I was younger and I was getting games at Richmond I was a bit immature and just went out and ran around," he said.
"I know what's needed at that level now and I'm 23 so I know what to expect. I'm a bit more mature, know the game plan and can stick to it and go out and play footy.
"I'll grab every opportunity that I can. I'm looking forward to this weekend to be able to prove to myself and prove to other people that I can play at that level.

I agree that he was hopeless. But I meant unlucky by the fact he was taken by a club devoid of ANY development program, a crap coach and useless facilities. He most likely would have been useless regardless of which club but atleast he may have had a fighting chance at a club like Collingwood or Geelong. Great facilities, great developement etc.
