Title: 1993 vs 2010
Post by: mightytiges on January 22, 2010, 09:01:49 AM
I just happened to be looking at a 1993 Richmond playing list and noticed some similiarities to the current state of our list - a champion midfielder in his 30s, many duds in their mid 20s who wouldn't survive the next 12 months, and a whole heap of U24 cubs who we were counting on to lift us up the ladder eventually.

Out of interest we finished 2nd last in 1993 with just 4 wins with all four wins coming in the first 10 rounds. We also made the preseason cup final that year but got flogged by 94 points in round 1  :-\.

I remember that pre-season Grand Final against Essendon well. I got stuck in this huge traffic jam leading out to Waverley, and missed the start of the first quarter.
We lost by a small margin (about 17 points I think), and making the fatal error of over-rating pre-season comp form, assumed we were in for a big year. Then, as you say, won only 4 games for the season :-[
But '94 onwards was a vast improvement as the kids started to get games into them, and Northey united them into a proud and purposeful unit.
Let's hope that paralells can be drawn with this current crop.

We were 4-6 by round 10 in '93 but lost the next 3 games narrowly after being in winning positions at 3/4 time and that seemed to knock the confidence out of the young team for the rest of the '93 season. It finally started to click midway through '94. We were stiff to run into the top 2 sides Carlton and Geelong in the last two rounds of '94 and finished 9th  :P.

Fingers crossed  :pray. Making finals/top 4 in 2012 would make us very happy and finish off Hardwick's initial 3 year contract nicely although the 94 group gained via trades the experience of Brodders and Micky Gale and also Greg Dear by the start of 95 which helped big time. It may take our current list longer (2013-14) though to reach the finals in the climate of GC17 and GWS hogging early picks.

Incidentally MT, which team beat us by 94 points in rd.1 of the '93 season?
My brain has erased that particularly unpleasant memory. Now if it could just get to work on wiping out the '82 Grand Final, that Geelong game in 2007, and rd.1 last year :lol

Rolls Royce it was Adelaide who beat us in rd 1 at the MCG.

They took it up a notch in rd 16 and beat us by 139  pts.Modra kicked a lazy 13.

MT....I hope this doesn't mean another 9th to add to our collection in 2011. :lol

Says something about the coach doesn't it. When did Mal Brown start to undermine Northey?

After we lost to Sydney by 14 points in our fourth match of 1994.
Sydney had only won 1 match in about 40 before they beat us in this game.

Adelaide huh? If you'll pardon the metaphor, that's one more of our MANY bogey sides that I'm looking forward to giving the flick to in the not too distant future.
