Geelong Cat Matthew Stokes tipped to face court on drug charges
February 3rd, 2010
BREAKING NEWS
GEELONG AFL premiership footballer Matthew Stokes is expected to appear in Geelong Magistrates' Court this afternoon on drugs charges.
Police have confirmed a 25-year-old man has been arrested in relation to amphetamines as part of an ongoing drug operation investigation in the area.
The Geelong man was charged with trafficking and possessing cocaine.
Cats CEO Brian Cook is at Geelong police station and will not comment until 3pm.
This morning’s arrest follows a series of drug raids executed on four properties in the Geelong area last Friday.
The raids saw police seize more than $3000 cash believed to be proceeds of crime and about $50,000 worth of drugs from the properties. The operation is ongoing.

* February 03, 2010 UPDATE 2.42pm:
GEELONG premiership player Mathew Stokes has been charged with possessing and trafficking one gram of pure cocaine.
The young forward was granted bail after a hearing in the Geelong Magistrates' Court this afternoon.
The court heard Stokes purchased one gram of cocaine from a Geelong nightclub worker last month to give to friends from the Northern Territory.
The court heard he told police he had never consumed the drugs.
Stokes was questioned this morning by detectives at Geelong police station as part of an on-going drug operation.
Stokes' arrest is believed to be linked to an investigation which led to five people being charged after early morning raids last Friday.
One of them was a nightclub security manager, accused of being the ringleader of a drug ring.

If the AFL are consistent :whistle then Stokes should at least face 12-month ban for bringing the game into disrepute.

If you wanna hang out youve got to take her out; cocaine.
If you wanna get down, down on the ground; cocaine.
She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie; cocaine.
When your day is done and you wanna run; cocaine.
If you got bad news, you wanna kick them blues; cocaine.
She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie; cocaine.
If your thing is gone and you wanna ride on; cocaine.
Don't forget this fact, you can't get it back; cocaine.
She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie; cocaine.
She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie; cocaine.

Geelong has suspended Stokes

I have no pity for him what so ever.
If guilty I hope they throw the bloody book at him.
What is it isn't he getting enough from footy, so he has to supplement his income.
-
The AFL will probably throw the book at him to look tough on drugs. Worst timing given the NAB Cup is just about to start.
No real loss to the Cats either. Stokes is just a fringe player for them and they've got Byrnes who had his spot in the GF side.
-
Adrian Anderson said according to the WADA code the penalty for trafficking drugs is from 4 years to a life-time ban. So if true Stokes' career is over.
-
What a dill :thumbsup

If he is found guilty of course then WADA applies
However, under what i call the "Benny Precedent" the AFL can still suspend him for bringing the game into disrepute. Which means the charges don't need to be proven
Very stupid young man

True MT but hey Geelong might want to put a lid on things very quickly though. 1 or 2 more of these 'incidents' and Junior might have an excu$e to head up to GC with his brother.
-
The silliest thing he has done is say that it was for his mates rather than for himself. I can understand why he did that but it has now allowed the cops to charge him with trafficking. As a user he would get counseling, rehabilitation, blah blah blah but as a trafficker he will be ostrasised .
-
I see on the tv coverage Stokes has the underbelly 70s mo going :wallywink. What a moron!

Always possible DC as w saw Judd leave the Eagles with all their off-field player dramas at the time.
There were a rumour along those lines earlier today as the media were finding out what was happening but it seems only Stokes was involved in this.
Whatever happens with Stokes we know Gazza no longer has any personal ties to keep him at Geelong if he wants to join his brother and dad up on the Gold Coast.

I bet all those idiot journo's have pulled out their long bow's and are now scrambling to find some sort of a link between Stokes and Cuz. Was the night club security guard "The Burly Man"?? hmmm the plot thickens.....

I'm surprised the journos didn't accuse Stokes of stealing Jordie's mo lol.
The Burly Man has retired from public life so he can enjoy his lemon squash in Ackland St in peace.

I had the same thoughts.

GEELONG forward Mathew Stokes will not play football until at least round eight after his recent arrest for possession and trafficking cocaine, with the club handing down its sanctions on Monday afternoon.

Most of this sounds like Geelong are trying to apease the public but i think its still very soft. Considering what Cousns got while not being caught with drugs on him. Im guessing the AFL can still ad sanctions on top of that.
"Between now and round four of the AFL season, Stokes is to find full-time employment and conduct any training out of working hours"
This section in particular has me a littled baffled, what has full time employment have to do with it. He will probably get some kind of job in the pub/night club industry, how much will that help him?
-
They might be giving him the message that his football career is over , so a new line of employment is needed :)

would be very funny

Geelong's ban will be irrelevant if he's found guilty in court of the charges and under WADA banned for a minimum of 4 years.
