Cambo on SEN:

* Been a long preseason as being a bottom side you start in October. Working hard and diligently. Hope to see some of those results on Saturday in the NAB Cup.

* Year of transformation - redevelopment at Punt Rd, new CEO, new coaches, 14 new players. Don't excpect to gel from day one. It's going to be a longer term approach as Dimma has talked about. No more quick fixes. Don't need to tell Richmond supporters to be patient.

* Can't replace players like Richo and co. quickly. He was though at the Bulldogs when Darcy, Grant and Smith retired and they made the PF the year after. No expectations and no talk of finals but you never know.

* Hardwick has come in with a plan. Highly regimented gameplan - follow it and you'll get a game; don't and you won't.

* Martin - play this weekend. No concern with his size. Up to him after this weekend to maintain a spot in the side but he's been impressive so far.

* Forward line - Polak, Jack, Nahas, Jake King. By 3-4 rounds in supporters will see a fairly regimented style.

* If a cub is performing at VFL level we won't be afraid to put them in.

* 4 rucks on our list. Simmo was doing well before Xmas before copping a niggle. Won't play this week. Lade full-time ruckman and midfield coach. Vickery won't be 20 rounds full on in the ruck but we'll try to get as many minutes as we can.

* Astbury - profile is outstanding. Character. Got some tricks. Played a couple of quarters and while still a little while away he did some clever things. If he performs at VFL level he'll get a shot.

* Grimes - had our induction weekend and comes from a top family. He won't die wondering. Constantly asking questions of our backline coach Justin Leppitsch.

* Cotchin - fitness staff have done a fantastic job. Trains twice a week rather than the others three. Regemented training style. All about strengthing his tendons as he grows. He played on the weekend and we'll play this Saturday night.

* Foley - was struggling a bit. Had operation about 7 days ago and went better than expected. Will start running in a week. Whether he plays round 1 no sure at this stage.

* Tuck  - disappointing end last year. Diligent worker. Will be given every opportunity. Is fit.

* We aren't going to put things in terms of wins/losses. But we believe we will improve this year. How that's measured wont be in wins/losses at this stage. Hope supporters will see that improvement down the track.

* You need some positive reward for all your hard work. Round 1 last year we not only lost after believing we could win but got absolutely smashed and it takes it out of you.

Excellent news on a couple of kids.

I just don't understand how Jake King gets a game?! Sure he has fire and determination which is why we all have a soft spot for him particularly when he was one of the few who would fight for the team when the opposition took us on. That's a given...but his disposal, decision making and size are all extremely detrimental to the team dynamics. Perhaps in the forwardline these will be hidden more but I've never seen him as a crumber or even defensive speedster like Nahas. It is hard for me to see this as a positive at the moment. I would rather have Roberts, Gilligan or Taylor claim his spot as a small forward if that is what he is.

I hope Hardwick's new role for him works but at the moment I just think he is taking up someone else's spot for the future.

Yep, but if Hardwick is true to his mantra then the newbies will have to prove themselves first.  King is probably his first option for a few reasons - he is more mature body-wise, he has proved he can mix it at the level, he fits the 'mould' of the attitude being cultured, and he wants to see if he can hold down a position for the future (knowing that the backline is already a no-go).  He is giving King the first crack and leaving the rest up to him - all the others will have plenty of time to earn their promotion.  Think jumper numbers - I think that small concept is saying a lot more about the Hardwick direction than meets the eye.

he's a dirty sniper who doesn't know how to channel his aggression properly.

He has, by all accounts, some skilled players breathing down his neck for a small forward spot. If he doesn't cement it down then his number will be freed up to give to a young bloke that has earned it next season.

Thanks for the report OE, great breakdown of the interview. Really sounds like we have a system in place for selection which is great, no more mates rRegarding King me and a couple of others called him in the forward line at the end of the season last year. Who knows he might just surprise along with Polo.

Just finished listening to the broadcast, who the hell is Francis Leach?? He asked some pretty uninformed and poorly researched questions IMO, particularly regarding Cotchin.

Thanks again OE!! :thumbsup

I think you are correct about the numbers smokey. From the start he has signaled that nothing is given that is not earned. Perhaps this is why King has the spot, merely warming it for the future talent, unless he plays out of his skin. By the sounds of it Hardwick is all about structure and game plan and perhaps King is good at fulfilling a particular role in that rigid structure - I'm unsure. Whatever the reason he has the attitude that Hardwick loves so this at least would make him an attractive addition to the team for the coach.

I just hope, as the season progresses, he is replaced by one of our younger small forwards because if he isn't then I feel that is an indictment on them and the team rather than King himself.

jake king up fwd will be good
he is too small for down back but up fw dhe can find teh goals, apply defensive pressure and also have teh freedon to run up feild and help the mids
he wont be exposed due to his lack of height up fwd as he has been down back
good move i reckon and just may work
