Title: Club sponsor clashing with AFL sponsor rule is arbitary
Post by: one-eyed on February 09, 2010, 03:24:39 AM
Didn't the AFL prevent Richmond from having a betting company sponsor (before signing Luxbet) because it clashed with the AFL's main betting sponsor tabcorp?

Collingwood revealing that its Olympic Park precinct training base will change its name from Lexus to Westpac.

AFL sources said yesterday the league had no issue with any clash between Westpac, which is also Collingwood's banker, and the competition sponsor NAB.

Yeah but it also depends on the AFL sponsor. The biggest problem we had was Tabcorp being a "protected sponsor" opposed an other betting agency sponsoring an AFL team. IIRC at the time Betfair (Jack's favourite and another AFL protected sponsor) has no problem with the proposed deal.

NAB would have the same right, if they don't oppose it then the AFL are likely to allow it

And there would also be a significant legal difference (I'm guessing) between club sponsorship and naming rights to a facility, depending on who funded the construction and who had use of or access to the facility.
