Pokies win for Richmond club
JASON DOWLING
April 22, 2010
THE Richmond Football Club has finally had a win. Unfortunately for Tigers supporters it was not on the field.
Like several AFL clubs, it has won on the pokies.
The Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation announced the Tigers' Wantirna Club had been granted permission to increase its number of poker machines by 10 to 87.
The commission said ''it is satisfied that the extra machines would not be detrimental to the well-being of the community''.
The commission said Knox Council opposed the application, arguing that while the municipality was affluent, the wealth was not spread evenly.

Been ages since I have been there, but when I was there they had a lot more than 10 (50-60) at least, when was that cut back. ???

The article says 'increased by 10'. I take that to mean they had 77 machines and now will have 87. Making money on others peoples misery, I don't agree with it. Oh hang on, I pay my membership every year don't I, not much difference there at the moment ;D

the wantirna club is a white elephant. club should never have done it. they would have been better of getting an established place rather than having it developed. anyway, 10 machines is no win imho.

oh hoo stuffing ray.... I can barely stop flouncing round the street for this news.... 10 more insidious pokies in some soulless dump...Yes ill have the fish and the deep fried side salad please... where was I.. Are they really trying to cheer us up out of pity or are they just being sarcastic?

I was of the impression that the gambling laws were that a venue had to be profitable before they were allowed to have pokies, as they didn't want venues relying on them as a way to become profitable. Now I'm not sure how this rule affects venues which already have pokies, but if the place is losing money then I'm surprised they were allowed to have more machines.
Also my knowledge of this comes from about 12 years ago, so it may have changed by now.
