Awesome, I'll get to see Griffiths play for the seniors.  ;D

Contin had better keep his spot.  If McMahon gets a game ahead of him, I'll be fuming.  Surprised to see Lawton dropped, too.

Totally agree Danog. Contin needs game time in the VFL seniors and should be getting games ahead of those who won't be at Punt Rd in 6 months time.

Great news that Griffiths is named at FF but I wonder if Lawton being a Burger player has been forced out as part of the selection?

Apparently Polly didn't play last week due to his dad passing away  :(.

Griffiths did well WHEN IT WAS KICKED TO HIM.  I swear, he had so many good leads and nobody chose to kick to him.  He was playing around the 50, almost never deep inside 50.

We only played well in the 2nd quarter and in about the last 5 minutes of the 4th.

Polak was very good today.  Won almost every contest he was in, and took a few contested marks.  Kicked perfectly straight too.

I didn't see Webberley playing.  Maybe he went down to Geelong as a 'just in case'.

Gourdis was good with his speed and leap.  He has 1 or 2 horrible kicking errors in the 1st quarter but was good the rest of the day.

Browne was ok.  Just ok.  Contested ok in the ruck and spread reasonably well.

Post was pretty bad all day, except for a few good handballs around the boundary.

Contin was ok.  Disposed of it well, but nothing fantastic.

I was very pleased with O'Reilley.  Perfect kicks all day.  He just needs to know where to run to.

I also have to say, it looks like we either don't have a gameplan for Coburg, or our players have no idea what it is.

Griffiths didn't get it kicked to him enough.  He'll play a few more weeks for Coburg to get fitness up, probably.  He was getting massaged on the bench and said everything felt fine, so that's good.  :thumbsup

I really can't tell, Ramps.  Nothing wrong with his disposal, though.

Polak pushes for Richmond recall
BRENT DIAMOND
May 3, 2010

RICHMOND utility Graham Polak is in line to return for his first AFL game of the season after a dominant performance up forward in the Coburg Tigers' eight-point loss to undefeated Sandringham yesterday at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

Polak, who has struggled with form since a tram accident threatened his life in 2008, kicked three of Coburg's 10 goals for the match. He was named best for the Tigers after missing the past fortnight for family reasons.

"He's [Polak]) just got to keep going the way he has been and keep pushing for selection," Tigers football manager Craig Cameron said.

Nick Sautner, on return from a one-week ban, booted four goals, while Shane Tregear and Robert Eddy blossomed in the midfield to lead top-of-the-table Sandy to victory after withstanding a courageous Tigers' comeback from a 21-point deficit at the last change, winning 10.18 (78) to 10.10 (70)

Polak, Hislop shine in Coburg loss

The performances of several Richmond-listed players almost got Coburg over the line in Round 4 of the VFL yesterday.

Graham Polak, Tom Hislop and Daniel Connors were among the best players on the ground in the Tigers’ eight-point loss against the undefeated Sandringham Zebras.

The loss was Coburg’s third of the season by 10 points or less.

Polak controlled the forward line all afternoon, finishing with three goals, 16 possessions and eight marks.

Connors (34 possessions), Hislop (17 touches and two goals), Jayden Post (24 possessions) and Jordan McMahon (25) also won plenty of the ball.

In defence, David Gourdis continued his brilliant start to the season, gathering 21 touches and cutting off several Sandringham attacks with nine marks.

After the match, Coburg coach David Newett praised the work of Polak and Gourdis.

“Polly really straightened us up and provided a real target.  It’s the best he’s marked all year, and he really looked like he was running on top of the ground,” he said.

“When he didn’t mark it he created a contest to give our smalls an opportunity to crumb goals.

“Down back, Dave Gourdis was excellent with his ability to chop out their attacks.

“He used his pace, and did a really good job with his defensive spoiling, marking and rebounding.”

Coburg started the match slowly after a scrappy first quarter, but Connors and Polak were instrumental in orchestrating a slender lead for the Tigers at the main break.

The third quarter belonged to the Zebras, before Coburg finished the match in a flurry but fell just short.

After the match, Newett praised his players for their ability to stay in the contest.

“It’s pleasing to see we’re still fighting out quarters.  We’re not getting beaten by big margins,” he said.

“Our ball movement wasn’t exactly where we would have liked, but we still found ourselves in the game.

“The guys have a good resolve, we just have to find a way to stay in front in the last quarter.”

The Tigers are on the road again this week when they play Casey on Saturday May 8 at Casey Fields.

Final Score

Coburg:             0.3    5.4    8.6       10.10 (70)
Sandringham      2.7    4.9    10.15    10.18 (78)

Goals: Polak 3, Jordon 2, Hislop 2, Kahlefeldt, Piuselli, White 1
Best: Clifton, Connors, Morgan, Hislop, Gourdis, Rayson

Round 4 Match Report
coburg tigers website

Seniors

We travelled down to Trevor Barker Oval to try a get our 2nd win of the year after a fantastic win over Box Hill last week.

Sandringham were sitting undefeated on top of the ladder,so it was going to be a tough day.

The first quarter was very scrappy in what were very calm conditions and while Sandringham had most of the scoreboard action,we only went into the break 16 points down.

The boys then got into action and Graham Polak(3 goals) became a focal target up forward and looked dangerous. Dan Connors(34 possessions) was instrumental in driving the ball into our inside 50 and Rhett Jordan in only his 5th game started to look liked he now belongs in the senior team and had 17 possessions and 2 goals playing as a half forward.

We went into half time 1 point up.

Unfortunately we let the Zebras kick 6.6  in the 3rd quarter, but Dave Gourdis was doing a great job on the dangerous Nick Sauntner after being moved onto him half way through the 2nd quarter.

Ben Clifton and Jason Morgan stopped a lot of Sandy’s attack and the margin could have been greater if not for them and we went into the last quarter 21 points down.

We kept the Zebras to only 3 behinds and had we kicked a little straighter then the result could have been different.

Polak took a strong mark 20 metres out but it was disallowed as he was deemed to have put his hands in the back of his opponent.

When the siren sounded we went down by 8 points.

We have now lost 3 games by under 2 goals so we have not been disgraced and it shows we are on the right track to notch wins very soon.

Goal Kickers: Polak 3, Jordon 2,  Hislop 2, Kahlefeldt, Piuselli, White 1

Best: Clifton, Connors, Morgan, Hislop, Gourdis, Rayson

Coburg:                0.3          5.4          8.6          10.10.70
Sandringham         2.7          4.9          10.15     10.18.78

Reserves

Another disappointing result especially after winning the first 2 games, but the last 2 games are to be forgotten.

The side picked on Wednesday, was decimated with late withdrawls for various reasons but still the Zebras had only won 1 game.

It was good to see Jake Collins playing his first game for us be a major winner across half back with 23 possessions and 10 marks.

James Lawton looked dangerous early taking some spectacular marks and later played in the ruck and puts his hand up for promotion.

Adam Houli maintained his good form with his strong defensive skills and the loss was no fault of his.

We went into half time only 3 goals down and to lose by 83 points is just not acceptable.

Coburg:                2.0          5.0            6.1          7.2.44
Sandringham:        5.1          8.1          14.7        19.13.127

Best: Collins, Houli, Smith, Lawton

Goal Kickers: Westhoff 2, Lawton 2, Duhau,  Hicks,  Gestier 1

This Saturday we travel to Casey Fields to tackle the Scorpions.

Coburg seniors stats from EOTT

David Gourdis   11 kicks, 10 handballs, 9 marks
Angus Graham    3 kicks,   4 handballs, 2 marks
Andrew Browne   2 kicks, 11 handballs, 1 mark
Jamie O’Reilly     3 kicks,   1 handball,  2 marks
Daniel Connors  22 kicks, 12 handballs, 9 marks
Pat Contin          2 kicks, 12 handballs, 2 marks
Jordan McMahon  8 kicks, 17 handballs, 5 marks
Jayden Post      11 kicks, 13 handballs, 6 marks
Adam Thomson  11 kicks, 11 handballs, 4 marks
Matthew White  12 kicks,   6 handballs, 4 marks
Tom Hislop        12 kicks,   5 handballs, 3 marks
Graham Polak    14 kicks,   2 handballs, 8 marks

Ben Griffiths       (1 kick, 1 handball, 2 marks) - Will really benefit from getting that first game of senior VFL football under his belt.  His compliance to run the patterns was good, although his timing was not quite there.  Needs to keep working on his contested marking.
