Mark Fine just now on SEN called Polo a tosser. He wanted to call Polo a ....head but kids are listening.
"Tribunal let Polo off last week for a punch into Chapman and the "tossbag" went out and did exactly the same thing again today. Will the Tribunal stupidly let him off so Polo can do it next week."
-
thought it was great
He was getting beat so he took his player completely out of the game, cant ask anymore than that ;D
So he gets a rest well someone now needs to take his spot & take advantage
If the game was in the balance & he did it & we won the game cause of that player being off the ground everyone would kiss his ass
-
it was the act of a sook getting beaten an taking a pisspoor cheap shot on someone out of frustration.
-
Well I can now put my finger up for all the crap I copped of the Polo lovers on this forum from before the pre-season and say that everything I have said about this so called AFL player is 100% correct. He should not be on our list next year, never should have been on our list and he certainly should not be in the team next week, even if he doesnt cop a week.
Webberly showed more poise and control than him today and better execution of the ball.

a nothing post. What Polo did is done every week, only difference was that it was off the ball (silly) and not in the act of a tackle. You don't get crap because of bagging dean polo, you cop because of the childish point scoring "told you so" nature of posts like this one. Yes Polo was silly but no it should not result in either him getting dropped or de-listed.

Rubbish reply. What Polo did was undisciplined, pure stupidity and not much of an example to our younger guys. He would have been better off running flat out at the ball and putting his head over it to set an example. I think you might find that Polo's actions on the field were more childish points scoring than my post.
If you really think this guy is part of our future than you are delusional. I would rather see him dropped as he is one of the turnover kings and promote Gourdis.
-
Has a line crossed through his name for mine. Dean is just to slow and has taken far to long to establish himself in a side that has been unsuccessful for his whole time he's been at the club.
I respect Mark Fine a fair bit, seems a slow day if he's calling Polo colourful names.
Polo isn't the answer for any problems we have IMO
-
Regardless of what Polo did he should not have said that. Needs to show some sort of decorum whilst still reporting that the incident was not acceptable.
As much as I like Finey too Popelord bet he would not have called Barry Hall a tosser after unsavoury on field incidents in consecutive weeks.

So would you trade Polo Tucker or do you think this sort of player and attitude belongs at our club? Regardless of media personnel comments? Just asking, not having go.. ;)

Can tell you Polo has what it takes to be a fine AFL player
Got coached backwards at Richmond.
Was a very fine player with excellent skills at GP & very consistant.
at least he did something in the last quarter compared to his useless brainless captain

I dont rate Polo or the captain and Id get rid of them both ;D

Polo topped off his fabulous game with one of the most courageous acts I have ever seen on the Football field....
NOT!!
Undisciplined cowardly cheap snipes are not something to be proud of.
Putting your head over the ball and winning contested possessions will take you much much further than taking cheap snipes at people who are not ready, or even looking at you, just because they are doing the things that win football matches better than you.
How many undisciplined 50 m were given away last night?
Would some people still be praising that act of cowardice if it had resulted in a free down field that directly cost us the game?

Well siad Al totally agree, this is not the attitude we are trying to bring to the club, Polo needs to pull his head in and play football, if he can't then IMO he is not going to be part of our future.
-
Polo doesn't tick enough boxes.
Not quick enough for a small defender to play on a Didak, Milne type player.
Not tall enough enough for a tall defender on Key forwards.
He's in the middle.
Not skillful enough for a run and carry player
Not smart enough to be a classy player
Not gutsy enough to be a courageous defender
Just doesn't tick any of the key boxes. He's just OK at a few things.
-

at least he did something in the last quarter compared to his useless brainless captain
3 goals in his first ever AFL game, a game in which he polled votes.
Result-He has hardly played forward of the ball again.
Polo can play WTF is wrong with you guys he is not a defender its as simple as that.
we continue to have players out of position and as the weeks go by their careers are ruined because we dont know how to develop properly

Dead right, while he did a few things yesterday that were decent I don't think he has any room for improvement, if he had, surley we would have seen glimpses of the way he played his first game... and we haven't. He has been tried forward this year and did nothing.
-
He has been tried forward this year and did nothing.
I'll bite oh wise one ;D
Can you just enlighten me as to when he was tried forward this season?
How many games would it be exactly? And yes you can include the NAB cup :thumbsup
-
:lol @ you know who and his "I told you so" attitude towards Polo. Polo had an average game, hardly a game worthing of delisting. He can play better but he's not our worst.
Average thread too. ;D

His first game back, he was sent forward and didn't really do much did he, look I am not the only one on this forum or in the media criticising his game/games. Don't you think by now he should be playing better than he does, do you also condone what he did on the weekend as minor as you may see it??
I didn't start the thread either Davey as I agree the title is very ordinary ( I know its the media comments that inspired the title) as are the name calling comments aimed at Polo.
Look who knows maybe he can turn his game around like Edwards has but IMO they have completely different on field personalities.
Question: Is there any player worth trading or de-listing at our club because there seems to be a few favourites that only just get by and when their names are raised all hell breaks loose but we are happy to write Tambling off over Polo... go figure... ???
-
I'd say our whole list is trade able if we win out of the trade deal.
I'd say Cotchin and Martin are about the only untouchables with Deledio and Riewoldt wanting big big compensation for a trade. Everyone else is tradeable if we win out.
For those that will get confused. I would think someone like Edwards deserves a spot next year on our list but if someone came with a pick 18 for him I'd sign the trade.
Have to start making the big decisions with a name going like a Foley, Newman, Thursfield, Moore, McGuane etc for some decent compensation.
-
His first game back, he was sent forward and didn't really do much did he
Pretty sure in that game he started off forward and was sent back down back because the ball never got into the forward line
That being said, he should be a core player in the side, needs to be doing much better, wouldn't lose sleep if he was delisted.

Polo was an average tagger in the u18s and most thought he 20 was too high for him to be drafted ...
Finey said 'Polo' about 23 times last night.

Polo was not a tagger at Gippsland Power & he certainly was not a tagger at Wyung :stupid

Well what made him stand out was his repeated shutdown jobs on Ryan Griffen at U18 level
-

He has played 3 AFL games this season
His first game back was against the Swans as a tagger/defender on Goodes and he played very well. His second game was last week against the Cats and he didn't play forward in that game either. Played down back, wing and in the middle. Certaily wasn't the worst in that game.
Played yesterday as defender, ocassionally coming off the wing at the centre ball ups
Really he has only played a couple of practice games as forward; being the first NAB cup game where he played forward & back. ANd then in th eother she played forward and in the middle.
So I don't quite understand how you can say "His first game back, he was sent forward and didn't really do much did he". When he hasn't played that role at all during the season proper.
I thought he had an average to poor game yesterday but he isn't the first and he wont be the last to have a bad game. I thought there were a couple of others who were worse from where I was sitting
Do I condone his puch - no I don't and he has copped the appropriate whack from the tribunal. Having said that I've seen a lot worse on the footy field than that. Certainly not reson to de-list
Do I believe he should be playing better. I think he does a lot of things off the ball defensively that people don't see or acknowledge because they are not deemed to be "stats" and as a result of that people think he doens't play well enough (he aint alone there). I think he's played some very good games that people wouldn't even know about. The defensive side of the game is so important and he has a great defensive game and a very good footy brain.
Finally, I beleive that all players are given a role each week and the reality is we as supporters don't know what those roles are. As a result we get critical because they don't get 20+ possessions and say the'y ve played badly. Tambling has been the perfect scapegoat in this I reckon during 2010. He has copped it again this week when it was clear at the game he was the link up man on the wing for kick ins but instead of using the first short option and then kicking it long to Tambling we persisted with these 50m+ kicks to a contest a kick ins. As long as they play the roles they are given then they have played in the eyes of those that matter and thats the coaches.
Personally I wouldn't be looking at trading the likes of Tambling or Polo - they are some others that I think have currency in the eyes of the industry that a dispensable on our list
-
;D is that right ?? how many times did he play on Griffen
-
;D is that right ?? how many times did he play on Griffen
I think it was twice in the champs, however it was a long time ago now, given they're from different states that was the only time they faced each other
Either way, his negating job(s) on Griffen were a major thing mentioned bout him around draft time.
-

Is unfortunantely in the in between category.
Candidate for trade perhaps as well as delist. Needs to be played in one position week in and out. I personally think he is a good forward as someone said dreamtime 2006 anyone. I think being coached by Wallace has hindered him and his development. Very silly what he did behind play and not brave at all hitting a bloke when he is not looking but hardly an act that requires delisting. That happens in every game. Balmey Jess and Mcghie were doing that for years. :thumbsup

Can confirm he wasnt a tagger with the Gippsland Power in 2004
-
i think he has a place in the side, but he needs to perform better than yesterday..How did I know he was going to cock up that switch play that was cut off for a goal, I could almost read his mind...he's by no menas quick and should learn more about playing within his limitations

yes it is true...its called chronic de-listitis

We have to give them a pick for taking him.. :lol
-
probably are giving them a pick if Veszpremi is coming the other way as the rumours suggest.
-
Polo will probably be rookie listed. 3 clubs looking at him.
-
Geez there must be some rumors going around over there, we only hear the WC and Docker rumors here..... boring.
-
I would disappointed if we had to give up a pick and Polo. Just give up Polo for anything! Take pick 1,500 if be.
Not a bad player, just not going to do anything at Tigerland!
-
Polo is like an Israelite wandering the desert with no land to call his own...or playing position for that matter.

this kid can play, was BOG in the dreamtime game on debut (2005 ?), bit done zip since, why ??
Might be his partners bright red hair , LOL

He's never reached those heights since!
Chalk up another one to crap development under Wallet.

When did a goal post fall on his shoulder Ox?
I think you've got him confused with McGuane who had a run in with a goal post down in Tassie playing for Coburg ;D

From memory it fell on his shoulder.

This article from 2007 covers both Polo and McGuane:
Tigers decide on Polo, Richo replacement
May 20, 2007 - 4:24PM
Richmond will decide this week whether to book young midfielder Dean Polo in for surgery after he suffered a second dislocated shoulder this AFL season.
Polo had his right shoulder pop out in a tackle in Friday night's loss to Adelaide but was able to return soon after and play the game out.
…………………………
The Tigers at least received some good news from the weekend, as defender Luke McGuane was cleared of a shoulder injury while playing in the VFL, after the Bellerive Oval goalpost snapped and fell on him.

I wouldn't have thought we'd make any delistings until after trade week.

Just could not play good football consistantly. Never went on

Just could not play good football consistantly. Never went on
polo was gone b4 the season started and he has his own self to blame, lets just say he opened his much much to much and said same pretty bad things which got back to the club
its a shame cos i think he could have been a top player if he had a head on his shoulders, maybe he will mature at another club

It's on par with the "Tambling had a physical at the Whitten Oval last Friday" rumour
Some very funny things get said this time of year
I love it for the comedy :rollin :rollin

One of the funniest things I've read for a while.

Deano now a Saint!
St Kilda like picking up Tiger rejects don't they - Fiora, Patto and now Polo.

This time I reckon they're on a winner though.

I've got a feeling Dean did something other than play bad football. There's always been rumours about him being out of favour for his whole career. Bad attitude?
-
Good luck at the Saints Deano. I hope you kill em, but not against the Tigers.
-
He is no longer with us so other than a good luck and that's it from me.
I know WAT will be pleased to see the back of him. He's been calling for this for years. :lol :rollin :lol

Can't agree with the bad attitude bit.
A great kid who deserves this opportunity seeing he wasn't given one this year in particular (I think I'm supposed to insert one of these ;) at this point)
Good luck at the Saints Deano. I hope you kill em, but not against the Tigers.
Ditto

Cheers WP. I wasn't saying he had a bad attitude but it seemed, from the outside, that he got a rough deal more often than not. Seemed to always be the player that got overlooked and was permanently on the fringe. It just looked like he had peeed someone off. Personally I always liked him and wanted to see him get a few more opportunities.
-
I liked chooka. Thought he was going to become a pretty good player for us after his 09 season but unfortunately that didn't happen.
Good luck at the Saints. :thumbsup
-
Lol at mark fine
-
The club was very astute is getting rid of Polo as they have been with everyone else who has gone since Hardwick took the Helm. He was a slow list clogger with no premiership potential. A great guy?? Maybe, didn't know him. But that's not enough to keep him at the club.
All I can say is I'm glad he's now someone else's list clogger. :thumbsup
-
Yep pretty much what Tiga said.
LMAO off at the Saints getting our rejects.
If I was a Ainter supporter I would be fuming at the dud recycling ways.
-
Molly Meldrum and Eric Banna are really in for a treat....now they can enjoy the "forrest gump-esque" skills of Dean Polo.

Polo prepared for variety of roles
By Luke Holmesby
Wed 24 Nov, 2010
ST KILDA recruit Dean Polo says his versatility could be his biggest asset as he tries to revive his AFL career.
Polo, who was delisted by Richmond at the end of the 2010 season, was a surprise selection by the Saints in last week's NAB AFL Draft.
In fact there were audible gasps in the Gold Coast convention centre when Saints recruiting manager John Peake read the 24-year-old's name with the 103rd selection.
Polo said he feared his career may have been over when the Tigers cut him.
"You always have that in the back of your mind and it's not a very nice feeling, but I felt that I've still got so much to offer in AFL football," he said.
"I've been given that opportunity and now that I have, there is no looking back and I'm going to take a hold of it."
Polo played just four games for Richmond in 2010 but says his ability to be used in multiple roles would hold him in good stead.
"I'm injury-free at the moment," Polo said. "I had a shoulder reco a couple of years ago which made me take a step backwards.
"I think my versatility would be a good thing for the club. I can play in the midfield and down back."
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon said Polo still had a lot to offer at AFL level.
"In his [Polo's] first game he had 30 disposals and kicked three goals," Lyon said. "That doesn't disappear."

didn't Terry Wallace say something similar about Kent Kingsley kicking 8 goals when we picked him up a few years ago?
What the hell does 1 game in 6 years mean?
Someone throw a clump of straws at ross Lyon
-
kent kingsley is one of the most offensive swear words i have ever heard. to say he was crap would be the understatement of the year.
-
Kent Kingsley kicked over 50 in a season twice. He honestly wasn't that bad :-\
Didn't do anything while he was here but it wasn't his fault Wallet was keen on him.

who the stuff is called kent anyway?

who is called kent? my name is Kent. Kent Davey, cousin of Pete the pedo

Wallace also said the exact same thing about one Jordan McMahon when we picked him up. Said he was an outstanding junior and you never lose your ability. Yeh right
-
Deano wasn't anywhere near the Saints' worst last night as defensively he didn't do too bad a job especially considering how often the ball was down his end. However the reason we moved him on was plain to see - he couldn't hit a target by foot forward of the play.

His disposal to say the least was woeful, could almost see him wearing the Tigers jumper when he missed an unmarked target inside 50 from 15 metres, just not up to the skill required skills level for today's possession footy. Still makes you wonder about the Tigers past recruiting in regards to skill by foot.

His last year at Gippsland Power his efficency was excellent.

as was his first game for us. But he got infected like so many before him. It took Geelong 2 years to cure Ottens after he left us.

Only seen bits and pieces of Chooka this year. From what I've seen he's been alright, tough as nails.
-
Dean is the perfect example of a poor modern day footballer. He may have been successful in the 90s but he takes an eternity to make a decision and that kills you in modern footy.
Looks rushed, is a small Luke McGuane.
Nice bloke, wont make it I'm afraid, correct decision to move him on.

Nope some of us from the time we recruited him complained bitterly about his foot skills. the other thing was his motor. as it panned out it was attitude as well.
As a club we most definately got it wrong with polo not just in useing such a valuable pick to recruit him in the first place but the inordinate amount of time we hung onto him for. should have been cut 2 yrs ago if not 3.
Its funny people blame development on these boards but that is hog wash. While it could have been better it is not the reason why so many richmond recruits have failed.
Ironic that we now have the means to recruit better and put more into our players development wise, yet those favorite players who people always defended are being weeded out.Why is that?
Well its simple you can RARELY fix kicking you can RARELY fix poor decision making and you can only tolerate poor attitude for so long.
The key has always been in recruitment dont draft players with chronic deficiencies in basic areas of the game because its shown time and time again the vast majority cannot be turned around.

Thats rubbish. Look at Leigh Brown at the pies. He was hopeless. Ditto Kepler Bradley.
it can be fixed, maybe not all the time but the right development can be all that it takes

Jake King is another good example. Foot skills and decision making were seen as poor under Wallace but a year and a half of development under Hardwick and he has become a good serviceable player.

well said. :cheers :thumbsup :clapping
and half the players collingwood have on their list. Good recruiting yes. But even better development.
-
yep look at both of them i dont think either were hopeless or either have greatly improved. they are still limited footballers who can perform a role.
both were originally drafted as kpps. i thought brown was servicable at nm and was a little surprised he was traded. he doesnt play kp for coll and he pinch hits in the ruck where imo hes ordinary.his out put at collingwood would be similar to what he did at nm. the difference he was played primarily as a defender at nm where his lack of pace and agility was found out.does he now perform a role sure has he greatly improved no.
the same can be said for kepler. yep servicable this yr and good last yr. in a similar boat as brown. he actually plays forward as a kpp and this yr has kicked some goals. he also pinch hits in the ruck and again i think him ordinary in the role. but statistically hes no better at freo than he was at essendon. atm freo have a role for him and hes doing it okay.
if i was at freo id be definately looking for another ruckman. well they have they went and got griffen and they are developing clarke both of whom are superior ruckmen to kepler..
id also be looking for better kpfs than kepler in the long term. but in this area he has come into his own to a degree.

The bloke likes to drink out of a pink straw.
Nuff said.

Kicking technique can be improved by only about 5%. If someone has a major flaw in their technique it is nigh on impossible to correct especially under intense game pressure. For instance if the ball takes a long time to get from hand to foot then you'll get away with it at training or at lower levels where the speed of the game is less however at AFL level in the heat of battle you'll be exposed big time.

From memory the question mark over Polo at the time was his kicking - not terrible but not that great either. In any case after 7 years in the AFL system a professional footballer shouldn't be missing 20m open targets by a long way. His poor footskills stood out by a mile on Friday night (not robinson crusoe at St Kilda mind you).
-
Polo's career has mirrored Mark McGough's. Best on ground in his first game then maligned then ended up at St Kilda and AFL oblivion after after that.
PS McGough won an Anzac medal in his second game.
-
Don't know why anyone could ever knock Polo's motor, that was one of his strengths
Its just that he had such a strange running action that he always looked exhausted when he ran
Pretty sure he was one of the Top draftees in 2004 for endurance

I agree with you claw. Those two are still limited.
When they started they were both high draft picks, with a LOT expected of them. They didn't perform to those expectations.
Collingwood picked up Leigh Brown and had a specific role for him, so did Freo and Bradley. They're now doing these roles. If another side tried to poach either of these guys to build a team or forward line around, they'd be sorely disappointed.
We have done this with Houli and Grigg, we needed outside players. If we got Houli for a tough inside mid clearance machine role, we'd be tearing him to pieces on this forum and tearing into the list managers for another recruiting mistake.

Jake King is another good example. Foot skills and decision making were seen as poor under Wallace but a year and a half of development under Hardwick and he has become a good serviceable player.
is he i disagree.
Jake is another very limited player.
He failed as a small defender and in the midfield. Hes now played as a defensive small forward as a last resort.
He has performed this role well but its the only role he can perform.
The one thing he has regularly done this yr is snag the odd goal each week. His goal accuracy is quite good as well but i would say the majority of his goals have been running into open goals.
Its hard to tell if his kicking has improved at all, mainly because he gets so few kicks a game. I still maintain he lacks the neccesary polish most little blokes have to have to survive in this caper. I think his possesion stats are terrible even for a defensive forward.
Dont get me wrong i think the role kingy is currently doing is worthy of him keeping his spot for now,so long as his defensive remains high and he manages to kick goals. long term i would be looking for a much more rounded player. i dont think him a part of the long term but for sure for now he provides something we are lacking.
What i dont understand is why we play both king and white. Both very limited both lack polish both are not good kicks IMO, and both do not find much of the ball.
mat white is another whos skills for a small imo are rubbish. another small in edwards footskills are rubbish. nahas is another. and yes nahas has improved in some areas but his disposal for a little bloke is still crap.
jackson still butchers it and is still dumb.mcguane is terrible tucky sheesh. miller is very ordinary grigg is not great graham and browne are poor users rance is limited with his foot skills and decision making is poor. connors for a so called good kick just plain butchers it far too often. nathan foley is only average at best when it comes to kicking. these blokes are all regulars they started out with poor disposal and they all still lack in the area.
to me the side over the next 18 months can be improved enormously just by continuing to add more bigger bodies and better kicks / decision makers.
IF WE STOP DRAFTING BLOKES WITH CHRONIC DEFICIENCIES IN THESE AREAS YOU JUST WATCH OUR DEVELOPMENT IMPROVE. Woops caps on apologies.
Finally is there a place for role players like king. well of course there is nearly all sides have limited players who can perform an important role. i will stick by my comments that in the main people do realise what in the main means. that is in most cases not all poor kicks poor decision makers etc cannot be greatly improved. we have drafted so many of this type over the yrs and it is one of the main reasons why we have been so poor for so long.

i still think the deficiencies that were there at the start are still there now. they have just found a role that he can perform to an acceptable level within the team.if thats development then hes developed.
they hgave found a role that is beneficial to him and the team but hes still a limited player and he still has deficiencies. as long as he performs that role well he will have a spot in the team as soon as he stops performing it there are no other options but see ya later.
in fairness no one can ask any small forward to average close on 2 goals a game which is what hes doing this yr and we have to few who apply good pressure week in week out. tackling and pressure and having a go has never been a problem with him and is the main reason why our supporters love him . its getting his hands on it enough controlling his temper and his lack of polish that has been and continues to be his problem.its being able to go onto a small player no matter where on the field and shut him down its to be able to rotate thru the midfield.
sorry as far as structuring up a side and what i expect from my smalls jake just doesnt tick enough boxes and yes for now hes doing a job but im looking for better and for us to be a real challenger we have to do better not just with jake and his role but with many positions with others as well.
people keep telling me have improved enormously on last yr im not so sure about that.

Ottens had back surgery before being traded. That would more likely to be the reason for his first few years being pretty quiet.
On King.
There is not too much wrong with his kicking at all.
His action looks good and he remains balanced. most of the time his kicks will go where they are intended, the problem is washe intended it to go. In the forward line this problem is largely reduce as the goal posts dont move.
A question on kicking turnovers.
If a pass is going to hit it's proposed target but is intercepted is that
a poor kick?
a poor decision?
or simply a good intercept?

Polo is an ordinary player but pre-season if I was told he'd do better than both Tambling and Collins at his new club I wouldn't have believed it.
