Damien Hardwick says Tigers need to push boundaries

RICHMOND coach Damien Harwick is happy for his young team to concede more free kicks and 50m penalties if it means they learn how to play unsociable football.
Hardwick said his players must adopt a more aggressive style of play and assert themselves if they want to become a successful club.
“I think every coach wants them to push the boundaries, but if you have a look at the most successful clubs over seasons, they’re the ones who have given away the most free kicks and had the most reports," Hardwick told radio station SEN today.
"So that’s where we’re trying to set the bar.
“We try and be aggressive, we think that’s a way the game should be played and that’s what we try and do.
"I guess we’ve probably taken it a little too far at some stages. But look, it’s probably better to be overzealous rather than under.”
The Tigers have lost midfielder Daniel Jackson for three weeks after he failed in a bid to overturn a suspension for head-butting Hawthorn's Campbell Brown last Sunday.
But Hardwick said Ben Cousins was a likely starter against Essendon at the MCG on Saturday night, and praised the work ethic and experience that Cousins had brought to the club.
“I’ve never seen anyone train as hard (as he does)," Hardwick said.
"The leadership he gives our young guys on and off the field is terrific.
"He’ll play this week, if he gets through training, which is a bonus for us, to get him back. To have a premiership player and a Brownlow medallist out there is nothing short of staggering.”
Hardwick said that the Tigers were in negotiations with budding star Dustin Martin’s management and was confident the 18-year-old, who has played only seven games, would not be poached by new club Greater Western Sydney.
“There’s a fair difference in going back to Redfern and all that sort of stuff. So look we’re very, very confident he’ll stay. He’s a terrific young man and we’re going to build our footy club around him,” Hardwick said.
Despite the Tigers’ winless season so far, Hardwick remained positive that the club was on track to becoming a successful team
“In all honesty, the AFL needs us. We’ve got a great plan in place with Brendon (Gale, chief executive officer) and (president) Gary March and I think once we get up and going, we’ll be hard to stop,” he said.

Yes, to players overstepping the mark to the point of suspension ala Jackson, which I might add, Jackson is being counselled at the moment for his on field agression. So there is a boundry, you don't need to get reported as the poster I was debating with to play Hardwicks style of football!! Hardwick said he didn't mind giving away some free kicks and 50mt penalties, I did not read in his article that he didn't mind players being reported!! Hope that clears it up for you Y&B. :thumbsup

Being a team of younger players I think them trying to show others that they will not be pushed around is a good thing.
If this means that it is called unsociable then I'm right behind them all the way.
We have to get back heaps of lost creditibility, so go for it boys.

thats right , he is being councelled and being continually reminded to get meaner tougher and harder and become our enforcer, he is being showed footage of campbell brown, how he pushes the boundaries with his aggression and gets away with it
ranga has only one way to keep his spot on our list and that is if he becomes a feared enforcer!!!! he got 3 weeks so what, he is now getting a rep as a nasty bastard and thats what we need

Suggest you read the article again - have a look at his comment regarding premiership sides. Think of the phrase "pushing boundaries" sometimes that leads to free kicks, 50m penalties, reports and suspension. Huge difference between that and clear cut lack of discipline. Grey vs black and white, try and process it.

And yes I agree with that, I just don't think we need players reported all the time to be successfull, but hey if thats what he thinks to achieve our goal then great. I just hope the hell we have the depth at some stage to be able to cover players that sit on the side lines like the clubs that have won GF's did, because we sure as hell don't at the moment.

Its good that Hardwick is trying to stop them from copping it lying down, but not the best idea to go to the press. Umps will be looking for excuses to give 50s against us.

Come on Jake, they already do now. We get so may rubbish Free's & 50's against us it isnt funny.
Why not bring it out in the open, the media coverage make even work to our abvantage which could then be passed onto the powers to try and get some consistacy in the umpiring.

Reckon we got especially massacred by the umps at the restarts every little grab was pounced on... whether or not this article had anything to do with it, i don't know...?

Is this hardwicks first big mistake? Surely these statements in the media made the umps watch extra close last night. They seemed to pick up every little scrag the boys put on Essendon.
