Title: Would you want a star NRL player to join Richmond?
Post by: one-eyed on June 05, 2010, 06:41:33 AM
Talk of Inglis seriously considering defecting to a Victorian AFL club as he wants to stay in Melbourne and in talks with Essendon. His salary would presumably be counted outside the cap if he is given a similar deal to Hunt and Folau.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/greg-inglis-in-talks-with-bombers/story-e6frf9jf-1225875720478

If a Inglis, Slater or Haynes considered joining Richmond would you want one of them at Punt Rd or do you think these code-converts are just a disruption and won't make it?

I believe we need to find a key backman, can someone like Inglis become a CHB? Can we afford it? There has to be a specific need and the money has to be their as well.

Issy looks like he could take a screamer with three blokes still hanging off of him to be honest lol.  Teach the man how to kick, get him to do some endurance work, chuck him up forward and pop it up for him.

Slater

He's a pretty crappy kick of the ball. Think he'd be just 1 of 1000's of midsized players not good enough for afl

Big Fat No.

If you are looking at other codes I still think Gaelic footballers would have a better success rate.

Given we have a massive amount of room in the cap I'd be happy throw 4-500k per year at Greg Inglis, the guy is a freak and can kick the SHERRIN a mile accurately too. Just look at the footage of him threading through a goal from 50m out on the boundary, it went through straight as a die and about post high then cleared the boundary by about 20m.

Also it won't get counted towards the cap. The AFL may offer some money for him to do promitional work in NSW but given we aren't a developing market it won't be as much.

At the end of the day, it all depends on what the NRL decide to do about the Storm. If they dismantle the side he will come to AFL.

A highly paid rookie is not the right fit for the RFC at this point in time.

I would like to see him have a go at Aussie Rules though.

Either Inglis or Slater would do. Both are much more suitable than either Folau or Hunt.

Lockyer has a great kicking technique for AFL and would have been a super pick up 6 or 8 years ago.

Bah chuck some stuffing great Union front Rower in the midfield, teach him how to bounce and run with some endurance and no bastard would be able tackle him.  They are always kicking for touch so they do these messed up hook kicks, so we could using em in the forward pockets to kick bananas at goal as well.  It's a shame the Brick with eyes is too old to play, good in an under midfielder LOL

Billy Slater naturally gifted and ready to play.

Nope. Would rather pay big bucks to ensuring we keep our stars of the future.

Unless the AFL consider taking up paying the salary of the player defecting to our comp no way.

I can see why Hunt and Folau are being paid 1 mil a year but to an existing AFL club that would ruin the salary cap of that club. Furthermore the AFL if they want this to happen should allow all clubs to have a marquee player from their list and whatever they get paid should not be factored into the salary cap which would encourage clubs to take players from other comps . Nevertheless it won't work. Michael Jordan one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen didn't do that well from his foray into baseball and he came out of retirement and back to the NBA within two years. Lets not let our egos get in the way. :thumbsup

While I fully agree with the AFL's actions in bringing Folau and Hunt on board, from a Richmond perspective we don't need the distraction.  We are a young team learning the basics of the game and the more we are left alone by everyone to do that, the better off we will be.

Its degrading to our game  pushing it to a new low
They will grab the money & produce ugly football to the game
When they fail they will run back to ARL & the AFL will be a laughing stock.  :banghead  :help

Unlike Essendon and St Kilda, we have a spare rookie spot still to fill. Any interest here in Greg Inglis code-switching to Punt Rd?

-------------------------------------------------------
NRL blocks new Inglis South Sydney deal

http://www.theage.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/nrl-blocks-new-inglis-deal-20101218-191f8.html

Inglis considers crossing codes to AFL as Souths deal drags on

GREG INGLIS is set to meet with AFL clubs St Kilda and Essendon as his frustration grows over the ongoing scrutiny of his deal with South Sydney by the NRL.

Storm's highest-profile fan, Molly Meldrum, an equally passionate St Kilda supporter, is believed to have helped instigate talks between the Saints and Inglis.

Inglis is also expected to meet with Essendon, whose interest in the league star was first reported by the Herald on April 30 - just a week after Melbourne was found guilty of massive salary-cap breaches that helped force one of the game's best players on to the market.

Under AFL rules, players cannot be added to a club's roster for the coming season after the annual draft, which was held last month.

But like Hunt and Folau, whose AFL contracts contain massive marketing payments outside the salary cap, Inglis would need a season learning the game before he could be expected to play at the top level.

Despite his lack of experience in AFL, Essendon great Michael Long - a leading campaigner and spokesman for indigenous rights and racial issues - believes Inglis could make the switch, and held a series of talks with him earlier this year to try to lure him to AFL.

He's only fat because he's had surgury which has ment he can't train for a long time.
Given there are no drafts left, I'm not sure if there is a way we can sign him up, pretty sure that final list lodgements are done

Not fat, just proportioned for League, same as Hunt was last year.  One season/pre-season has re-shaped Hunt significantly and would do the same for Inglis.

Instead of paying this bloke $400,000 or $500,000 a year to make the switch we should keep our powder dry and keep the funds available for a massive tilt at Tom Scully come years end. At the very least we will force Melbourne to blow there salary cap.

Disagree carried extra "condition" all of the 2010 NRL season - he even admitted it himself that he wasn't fit enough during the course of the year

Not sure that training is Greg's favourite part of his job

Wouldn't touch Inglis with a 40 foot pole shown himself to be more interested in the $$$$ than anything else. How he has conducted himself (Broncos now Souths) hasn't been great IMHO

Not sure I agree with this. Brisbane promised there would be some 3rd party endorsements to cover the shortfall in what they could pay him and they never happened. Souths did the same thing and now the NRL are blocking the deal because they won't specify what they are. Goes to show that every team in the NRL are taking advantage of the system which Melbourne got done by.

Greg should move to Union, perhaps play for the Melbourne Rebels

Infamy you should have been listening to SEN this morning where a journo from the Telegraph went through the whole sorry saga

Facts are Inglis had verbally committed to the Broncos, was to fly up there to sign the contracts but supposedly told Broncos "I can't come today because it's raining and the airlines don't fly". Broncos said well yes they do Greg what's the real story and he then confirmed that he been talking to Souths and he was going there now because it was a better offer ...

As I said he's coming across as 1/ a money hungry sportsman and 2/ an absolute goose

His name is absolute muck up here.  The Broncos hate him and take every opportunity to have a crack at him but it will be very interesting to see how he is received at State Of Origin time.  I'll be willing to bet all the prejudices fly out the door come May.  But I do agree with you WP, he has let his desire for the $$ influence his moral barometer.  No surprise to me the that his initial mentor in all this was Anthony Mundine - a fine citizen if ever there was one.

Juries well and truly out for all these NRL converts as to whether they will even make it as average players let alone justify the money that has been expended upon them. Hunt is apparently starting to show glimpses of promise but now we hear that Falou has ankle problems and will more than likely need surgery. Both swapped for the money no doubt and any spin regardling 'challenges' is just embarrassing for all involved.

Inglis has already shown he has no real interest in becoming an AFL player. He has used the potential swap as a threat over the NRL powerbrokers and that is all. I can not see him swapping and would be incredibly surprized, even if he does, that he became a star at the game to equal his standing in NRL.

I hope for the games sake the risk pays off but be assured if any of them start to struggle and their contract is reduced, they will run back to NRL it won't be even vaguely funny.

The risk and cost is just too great for us imho, even if the opportunity presented itself.

I saw it reported yesterday that the 3rd party deals promised to Greg never eventuated which was why he was hesitating to sign the contract. Probably more to it, but certainly understandable.

Just found it
Quote
Greg Inglis's future in the NRL remains up in the air after the NRL blocked his proposed move to South Sydney on Saturday.

The NRL advised the Rabbitohs that it must include the full value of a number of third-party agreements relating to the Queensland Origin star's $400,000-per-year deal.

Inglis, who reneged on a deal to sign with the Brisbane Broncos when third party deals failed to materialise, will now continue to remain in rugby league limbo as he is without a club for 2011.

Putting my Dragon's bias aside, I'd take Jamie Soward in a heartbeat on his kicking ability alone. He is also lightning fast and would make an excellent Flanker. His only downside would be height at 179cm but he's taller than a few others on our list. However as with all NRL players he may initially struggle with the 360 degree awareness you need to be a decent AFL player.

I heard this morning that apparently Greg Inglis is planning to have talks with the Bombers as a backup if his South Sydney deal doesn't get over the line. The guy can run but I don't think he could hit the side of a barn with his kicking. I reckon He'd need at least 3 years in the system before he'd be ready and then he would be too old for mine. Take him Bombers...take him.   :thumbsup

Al are you comparing his kicking to other league players or AFL players. I have seen him do the odd kick on the last tackle and the results were less than amazing. If he was that good, surely he would have been kicking ahead of Smith and Cronk. I'm not saying he couldn't develop into a good kicker, but from what I have seen in the rare moments he did kick for the storm it was nothing to write home about.

With the kind of free kicks being called these days, AFL would drive this guy nuts. He's a very physical man is Inglis and loves the rough stuff.

I wish he'd go to union. The wallabies need a big, fast hard running number 13 with ball-skills and with time Inglis would easily be an up-grade over Ashley-Cooper. Could even end up better than Mortlock.

I thought Gasnier would be the one (would've been awesome!)... Imagine either one of those two outside of Genia, Cooper, Giteau, Barnes etc. And with the likes of Beale, O'Connor, Mitchell, Iaone around them..., that's unstoppable!

will probably never happen but a bloke can dream can't he... :thumbsup

Totally agree. When Hird said we will only see if he can play well.. thats crap as long as he knows how to tackle and kick he will rack in memberships like GWS and GC only reason for them to take him.

These players will never be what there worth on the field, personally i would rather try and snare a big name AFL with money and literally improve your team not your media appeal

The main issue now for me with Inglis ending up at Essendon is that the AFL will allow them to break the draft rules to do so so Ignlis can end up on their list for 2011. It was only 2 years ago that we were prevented by the AFL (after whinging from Eddie) from moving Polak to the rookie list so we could pick up Cuz. Either rules are rules as we were told back then or they are not.

Not really
As he hasn't been on an AFL list at any level for 3 years he can just be signed to the club, no need for the draft
