Lucky to reach 10 Tigers playing at Coburg this week....

Tambling, Vickery, Gourdis, Hicks, Taylor, Gilligan, Contin, Westhoff, Polak and of course poor old Jordie.

I guess the positive is Westhoff may get a senior VFL debut on Sunday.

You wonder if he didn't play up the ground or even in the ruck to get in the best and only kick 1 goal.

Does anyone know where he played most of the game?

Yeah he played most of the game off half back, moved up to the wing in the last qtr to provide some extra run. He was solid, not sure if he will go back up.

10 RFC players played for Coburg seniors yesterday - Tambling, Polak, Vickery, Grimes, Gourdis, Taylor, Hicks, O'Reilly, Contin and Gilligan. Westhoff was the only one in the Coburg ressies.

Geelong had the likes of Hawkins, West, Gamble, Hogan, Duncan and Drum who have played senior footy this year plus a fair few others including rookies.

from today's Age...

Coburg struggled to fill the void left by several Tigers being promoted to the Richmond list this week.

Richard Tambling was its best with exciting flashes in the midfield, while Graham Polak played his best game since being knocked unconscious last month.

Polak booted three goals and provided a target early up forward, before the Cats ran riot in the second half to claim just their fourth victory of the season.

Good to see Blingers took his demotion the right way as an opportunity to work on his game at half-back as Dimma suggested. I agree with TM and give Richie a couple of more runs at Coburg to show consistent form at the lower level before bringing him back into the Richmond side.

How did Vickery go TFL other than kicking two goals and where did he mostly play yesterday - ruck or FF?

Finals out of reach for Coburg
richmondfc.com.au

Richard Tambling and Graham Polak were among the best players in Coburg’s loss to Geelong yesterday.

Tambling collected 29 possessions and took eight marks, while Polak, playing in the forward and back half, had 17 touches and took four contested marks.

However it was a disappointing day for Coburg, going down to Geelong by 29 points at Craigieburn.

The Tigers trailed by just two points at half time, but a five-goal third quarter burst from the Cats effectively put the game out of reach.

“We played some reasonable footy in the first half, but Geelong really capitalised on our turnovers and made us pay dearly,” Coburg coach David Newett said.

“We let ourselves down in the third quarter, and that’s probably where the game was broken.

“We got back to within a couple of goals in the last quarter, but their experience put the win out of reach for us.”

The loss dashed Coburg’s slim finals chances.  With four games remaining in the season, the Tigers are three games and percentage outside the top eight.

“We just have to make sure we finish the season strongly, and continue the development of the players,” Newett said.

“We’ll continue to give the boys the opportunity to learn the game plan and our structures, so we can hit the ground running next season.”

Coburg takes on Frankston at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn, this Saturday at 2pm.

Final Scores

Coburg Tigers   2.3  8.5  9.6  14.7 (91)
Geelong          4.1  8.3  13.4  19.6 (120)

GOALS:
Coburg Tigers: Dahl 3, Polak 3, Vickery 2, Clifton, Carnell, Piuselli, Power, Morgan, Lawton
Geelong: Johnson 5, Menzel 4, Simpkin 3, Vardy 2, Motlop 2, Hunt, Weston, Simpson

BEST:
Coburg Tigers: Tambling, Polak, Dahl, Rayson, Kahlefeldt, Power
Geelong: Hogan, Johnson, Laidler, Djerrkura, West, Simpkin

Match Report: Coburg Tigers vs Geelong
VFL site

Coburg Tigers finals aspirations have been dealt a blow following a surprise 29-point loss to a potent Geelong outfit at Highgate Reserve in round fourteen of the VFL season.

Geelong came out firing in the opening term of the match. They dominated possession early and took advantage of their opportunities. Cat Ryan Gamble made a terrific attempt to spoil the contest enabling teammate Jonathan Simpkin to put their first on the board.

Coburg worked tirelessly as Shane Piuselli moved the footy swiftly through the centre corridor and Graham Polak was the play maker down in defence for the Tigers.  Despite the good work initiated from defence, Geelong’s pressure forced constant turnovers in their forward line.

Both sides had five scoring shots, but it was the Cats who were able to kick straighter and obtain a ten point lead at quarter time.

At the break, Tigers Coach David Newett told his players to ‘be relentless’ and move the footy quickly into the forward line. Newett highlighted to his players that they are the ones who play the attacking brand of footy and should be showing Geelong how it’s done.

The Cats began the second term as they ended the first.  Ben Johnson booted the sides first of the quarter and it appeared the Cats were going to kick away in the second term. To the Tigers credit they worked extremely hard to get on top of their game and swing momentum in their favour.

Tables had turned and it was Geelong who found themselves making unforced errors in their backline and allowing the Tigers back into the game. The contest tightened up. It was goal for goal. The Tiger faithful erupted when Nicholas Carnell kicked a goal on a tight angle to snatch the lead off the Cats for the first time in the match.

The Tigers were damaging through the midfield and found multiple avenues to goal. It was a two point ball game, in their favour, setting up a ripping second half of footy.

Both sides came out of the main break rejuvenated and ready to dictate play. The efforts of Tom Allwright to spoil the contest and win the footy inspired his teammates, resulting in a goal kicked by Daniel Menzel.

Coburg was effective as they rebounded off their backline but weren’t rewarded for their effort. The Tigers scoreboard pressure was nonexistent as the forward’s struggled to find space and the Cats defender’s read the play well and chopped off entries inside 50.

It was evident following Matthew Dennis’ goal at the halfway mark of the third term that the Tigers could create headaches for their opponents if they utilised the sides pace venturing down the centre corridor. That passage of play proved to be the only shining light for Coburg fans as Geelong dominated the quarter and kicked 5.1 to 1.1.

Coburg Coach David Newett was disappointed with his players saying ‘that wasn’t us’. He continued to tell his players not to be ‘too fancy and throw it away, the ownness is on you to get your teammates up’.

The Tigers had taken into account every word the coach had said at the huddle, applying ferocious tackles and displayed a real hunger for the footy when it was in dispute. Tall forward James Lawton stood tall and took a strong mark and was able to slot the goal.

The morale was high in the Tigers camp after Benjamin Clifton was able to kick the side’s second consecutive goal and draw the margin to within ten points.

Geelong corralled and responded with two quick goals of their own and put to bed a Tiger fight back. The Cats put their bodies on the line ensuring they got their hands on the footy first with the small forwards who were instrumental as the Cats looked to spot up targets and capitalise on their shots on goal.

Ruckman Nathan Vardy was crucial in the ruck as he had exceptional awareness of his teammates, tapping it to their advantage. Cat Daniel Menzel finished off a good day at the office by booting his third for the afternoon.

I thought Vickery played a terrific game MT, best i have seen him play at either Coburg or Richmond personally.

He was strong at the contest and was good around the ground. Tool some real strong grabs and kicked well. The ratio would be approx 75% of his time in the ruck and 25% up forward i would say.

Tambling probably let himself down with his kicking yesterday, his leadership and attack at the footy were fantastic.

He might get one in the last round Bents, just as a taste.  Pretty happy with how he appears to have come on this season, handling each step up in class quite well it seems.  Hope he keeps it up, the more running options we have out of defence, the stronger our side gets.
