If players had their way, Cousins would stay

RICHMOND captain Chris Newman says his players love playing with Ben Cousins as the veteran midfielder approaches the end of what could be his final season in the AFL.
Cousins has said he would like to go around again but the club says it will wait until the end of the year to make what it calls “a list management decision”.
The 32-year-old has played 13 games this season for 28 for the club since being taken with the last pick in the 2008 NAB AFL Pre-season Draft, after 238 games, a premiership and a Brownlow Medal while playing for West Coast.
Cousins played his best game for the Tigers in Sunday’s fighting win over Adelaide at the MCG, fuelling more speculation regarding his future.
“I’m not sure what the club will do at the end of the year, whether they will seek out our advice or not,” Newman told radio station SEN on Monday morning.
“I think it really is a club decision - as far as the players go, we love playing with Ben.
“He offers a lot of leadership on-field and off the field, and I think you could see it on the weekend - he was very clean with the footy and he’s running on top of the ground.
“I think the best thing with Ben is he’s playing for his football career, so he’s really enjoying it, and we’re really enjoying playing with him.”
Coach Damien Hardwick was very happy with Cousins after the Adelaide win.
“You never lose your ability, you just lose your confidence, and Ben - to his credit - is playing some really good football,” he said.
“It’s fantastic to see him up and going - he’s infectious when he’s lively, and the guys enjoy playing with him, and he’s had another good game, which is a great result for him.
“He’s a great leader and a very good player, and what he does is communicate well and he teaches as well.
“He’s been a very good player for our footy club.
“We’ll make a list management decision at the end of the year.”

Richmond have a very young list.
White and mcgaune are now senior players in terms of games played, ad very few players next season will be older than foley who is only 24 yoa now.
Must be room for at least one old player.

if they gonna keep tuck and king theres no way they shouldnt keep cousins.

1 more year. We're going to have 1 more big cleanout (at least 8 I'd say), so his experience will be invaluable for the newbies.

Yep, agree.

I don't have any kind of inside knowledge if that's what you're asking. The players I think will be moved on are:
McMahon
Simmonds
Polo (trade; if can't, delist)
Thomson
Nahas (trade; would delist but has a year to run on his contract)
Roberts
Polak
Gilligan
I'd include Hislop in that, but apparently he was told that his mid-year surgery was to make sure he's 100% for next year's pre-season. Hardwick must have a spot for him up forward. I try to like Hislop, but he's just too slow for my liking. Needs better discipline too.

how many players like him do we play in our team. Might as well keep polo too.
Hislop= DUD

isnt it great that newman is now in the top 3 or 4 captains in the afl
been a while since we had a great captain
-
cuz is gone at the end of the year
I reckon you may be right. The club doesn't want anymore of the drama before round 1 this year and again with the sleeping tablets, anymore.
-
maybe hislop may turn into a Max Rookie type forward who goes around thumping people

Reckon you're right.

Reckon you're right.
Whether he stays or finishes up:-
i. It has been a success for player, club and AFL
ii. By not responding to the press or player comments, it is a great sign from RFC that the players, media and coterie/ex players NO LONGER RUN THE CLUB
iii. Despite the thoughts on many - especially on fan forums, we'll be fine if he retires
Having said all of that, I would love him to play out this year and play a full year next to chalk up 50 games with the club - he's a champ.
But it ain't my call and I'll respect whatever the club decides because I reckon these buggers are finally getting it right.

cuz is gone at the end of the year
you forgot one of these :shh

I could understand the logic of tapping Cuz on the shoulder at the end of the season because we want to play a talented young cub in his place next year. However to offload Cuz yet keep a dud like Hislop on our list makes no sense whatsoever :help.

i really want cuz to play on next yr but this decision if he is let go has nothing to do with his leadership or ability but all because of his illness and his inability to get on top of it
from what i am aware of, he had 3 different gp's when he was only meant to be using the club doc only
my question is, why did he have 3 gp's and why didnt he tell all of them that he was seeing and being open to all and the club what prescriptions he is on
many of u think that sleeping tablet saga is forgotten, and was a simple mistake, well all im gonna say is , ;) ;) :shh :shh

Who told you he is only supposed to see the club doctor? Is the club doctor an addiction specialist or has experience in drug rehab.
How do you know what he did and didn't tell his doctors?
Tell us more ! if you can back up what you say no need for :shh :shh

Hope Cousins is kept on for next year. Good influence on the field

Agree.
