Despite a 22-point loss to North Ballarat in the VFL on Sunday, Coburg coach David Newett was pleased with the performance of his young players.
After a sluggish start against a top-four opponent, Newett was encouraged by a strong second half performance, when the Tigers enjoyed more inside 50’s, strong clearances and a solid transition from defence.
Defender David Gourdis was among the best with 24 possessions, along with Jamie O’Rielly and Dylan Grimes, who both continued their development.
Through the midfield, Robbie Nahas racked up 17 possessions, Andy Collins showed a lot of class with 13 possessions and a goal and Pat Contin played his best game of the season.
“Across the board I was really impressed with how we played against a top three side like North Ballarat. We took it right up to them,” Newett said.
“We handled the windy conditions well, we played well and we stuck to our structure.”
Coburg takes on The Bendigo Bombers on Saturday 14 August at ABD Group Stadium.

Interesting to see if we give Goo and others a game or two in the last three rounds. It makes sense to do so as we've got nothing to play for and a number of the younger guys are tiring after their first full AFL season. O'Reilly and Grimes are others putting their hand up. Thanks for the summary Spock :cheers. Good to hear Contin had a good game in the VFL seniors. I think he's got potential to make it off the rookie list in time.
