Tigers set to play a home game in Cairns
Caroline Wilson
September 19, 2010
RICHMOND is negotiating to sell a home game to Cairns next season as the AFL's frontiers continue to expand with the introduction of a 17th club.
The Tigers, who will also host a home game against Port Adelaide in Darwin, have tentatively agreed to play a pivotal role in the competition's premiership season debut at Cairns's Cazaly Stadium against the Gold Coast, which has been pushing for a 13th game in Queensland in 2011.
The move would mean Richmond would no longer play the Gold Coast in its AFL debut game at the Gabba in round two, as earmarked earlier this month by the AFL. The Tigers have told the league they would look at hosting a game in Cairns if it removed an Etihad Stadium home game from their fixture.
A Cairns home game would add $500,000 to Richmond's bottom line on top of the $1 million three-year Darwin deal in which the club agreed to play two home games there between 2010 and 2012.
Although Richmond, which is still serving a debt of close to $5 million, has requested to play all home games at the MCG, except for the Darwin clash, the prevailing view is the club would do better to host the Gold Coast in Far North Queensland than at the Docklands.
The AFL is negotiating with the Queensland Government, which is pushing the fixture along with AFL Queensland, to upgrade Cazaly Stadium in time for next season. It is not known whether lights can be installed in the first stage redevelopment but, if not, the match will be played in daylight.
The stadium hosted a cyclone-affected NAB Cup clash in 2009 and the seasonal weather conditions have caused Cairns to be deemed unsuitable for future pre-season games.
Gold Coast chief executive Travis Auld told The Sunday Age last night that his club had requested a fixture in Cairns next year with a view to expanding its development across the state where the club had already established a number of talent academies.
''Our stadium agreements mean it would have to be an away game for us,'' said Auld. ''AFL Queensland is keen to get more games up here and we are keen to have a bigger presence in Cairns.
''We understand the AFL has spoken to a number of clubs and I heard last week that Richmond had shown an interest.''
The Tigers had also looked at selling home games to Hobart, but were told by the AFL that North Melbourne would be the prime candidate to host games at a redeveloped Bellerive Oval, but not before 2012.

selling the home game against the GCS is probably a good idea but we really need to do something about the debt situation. in all honesty if the toorak toffs can do it surely the RFC can as well!
-
If it adds about $1/2 mil to revenue then it it is helping rid the debit.
The bloke going by RFC official on BF said something would be announcds soon regarding Debit demolition
-
I trust they will adjust the price of our membership ticket accordingly :P
-
love Cairns :thumbsup
-
Not too keen on this because it again means our supporters in Melb (who put in the most $$$ into the club via membership - sorry interstaters but it is a fact) lose out again.
But I suppose we have to make up for the loss of $$$ from the Royal Oak somehow ;D
Just on the Debt thing - and doesn't Caro make a song and dance about it when it is clearly manageable unlike what Melb had ::) - March mentioned at the B&F that they would launching something later in the year to give it the stuff ;D
-
didnt see it coming but makes a whole lot of sense and if it returns 500k pa then a very good decision :thumbsup
-
Yes but will they use the money on getting rid of the debt.
-
Love Cairns!
Go for it!

Not directed at you WP, but all the supporters who won't attend games at Docklands for whatever reason have no real gripe about this. If supporters regularly filled the stadium like they did last round against Port, then the financial incentive of this wouldn't be so great.

That's a fair point al and part of me agrees BTW but I really do worry about what appears to be a form of "punishing" Melb based supporters at times.
We need to keep our membership growing and for some people the idea of losing another Melb game could be the difference between being a member and saying "no thanks"
I suppose I am really lucky because I travel to interstate games so get to see a fair bit of my tigers but alot of people (I'd say the majority) aren't in that position.
Actually I was lucky enough to attend all H&A games this year - yep all 22. With that in mine & after reading this article I've been thinking about what I will do next year? All 22 or do I give one of the trips a miss. If we do Darwin and Cairns then even for me it would be a real stretch ...
I just think it is really important not to alienate your long term supporters. I understand the need for doing it I just worry about the execution of how it's done

Lived up there and in the table lands for 6 months, living off the land crabs prawns fish pigs, was an awesome time. Be a blast to go back.

I blame the 10,000 missing limp wristed fans at Etihad when we played Freo 8). Should have been 35,000 that night. They lack the passion of being at the game to drive that extra 10 minutes or pay that extra $5 to get to Etihad compared to the G. Are they tight or what ::)
-
If the AFL are consistent with our fixture based on recent years then we'll probably cop the Darwin and Cairns games in consecutive weeks :P.
I can understand the $500k being the incentive and the need for cash but I don't like the idea of selling off two home games :-\. One is bad enough. We're a Melbourne based club; not nomads. It's not supporters fault either the club has been rubbish onfield for so long and that this year we were fixtured home games against 5 interstate clubs, the 3 low drawing Melbourne clubs - North, Dogs, Dees - and finally a "home" game against St Kilda at their home ground ::). It was a poor draw from a financial perspective given we all knew we would struggle big time in 2010.

It wasn't so lucky up to round 6 ;) ;D

Booking my tickets as soon as that fixture gets released.

I agree with you 100% MT but I will say this in defence of selling these games: given our debt level and oft-stated intent of reducing it over the next couple of years, a couple $500k hits will be invaluable in reaching that target. As long as it's only for the next season or 2 then I think most supporters would be prepared to wear the 'hurt' for the short term gain but I would hate to see it become a regular occurrence.

AFL on the way: Tigers eye chance to play up at Cazalys in Cairns
Murray Wenzel

The Cairns Post
CAIRNS is almost assured of hosting its first AFL premiership game next season. Are you excited about seeing Aussie Rules in the Far North? Who do you barrack for?
Richmond is the latest team to be linked with Cairns, joining North Melbourne as the teams most likely to play a premiership points match against new AFL team Gold Coast.
Cairns AFL has been working feverishly behind the scenes to secure at least one AFL game next season.
Planned upgrades to the field and change rooms at Cazalys will bring the ground up to AFL standard.
With a strong following in Far North Queensland, an AFL match in Cairns is expected to attract a crowd of between 15,000 and 20,000 people and have economic spinoffs of $4 million.
It will help promote Cairns as a tourism and sporting destination with the action to be broadcast around the country.
Speculation about Richmond playing in Cairns next season was sparked by Melbourne media yesterday.
It came as the international tennis spotlight was focused on Cairns for the Davis Cup qualifying tie between Australia and Belgium.
Cairns AFL chief Gary Young yesterday said he was not aware of the Richmond proposal, but was extremely confident an AFL game in Cairns would be officially announced soon.
The Victorian club would benefit financially by moving a home game to Cairns, while it would give likely opponent Gold Coast extra exposure in Cairns, a region with which it is forging a strong alliance.
"In terms of specific clubs I haven't heard Richmond thrown around until now. But a good campaign from our end would mean it wouldn’t matter what Melbourne club came, it would be successful," Mr Young said.
"This sort of news can only be good for us and I'd like to think the decision comes to a head shortly."
Based on spending at last year's Australian Master AFL tournament in Cairns, Mr Young estimated an AFL fixture would bring $4 million in to the city.
"I'm very comfortable in saying we would achieve that figure. It's a very attractive offer (an AFL game) when potential travellers are looking at coming here on holidays," he said.
Mr Young said people would travel from across the region to watch the game and he knew of many Tigers fans in Cairns who would be keen to see their team head north.
"Associations would organise it so they scheduled a bye for that week. People would go to great lengths to get to the game."

From the RFC website:
Richmond Football Club today confirmed it was in discussions with the AFL that could result in the Club playing a home game against Gold Coast in Cairns each year, for the next three years.
The Club however stressed that no decision would be made that would in any way compromise the rights of members to access 11 games in Melbourne. “Our members are of paramount importance to this football club and we would not make any decision that would adversely affect them,” Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said today.
“The first question we ask ourselves before making any such decision is: Are we able to protect the rights of our members? If the answer to that is yes, we then consider the other implications of moving a game.”
“As part of any decision we then have to consider what it means for the team, the growth of our national brand as well as the financial implications for the Club.
“Should it evolve that we play a game a game in Cairns, our members will certainly retain access to 11 games in Melbourne and we would anticipate the vast majority and quite possibly all of those games would be at the MCG which would be a great result for them.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said he had no concerns about his young side having to play an additional game on the road should the Club decide to play a game in Cairns.
“Travel is a reality of the modern game and coping with it is imperative if you are going to win enough games to play finals. From a football development perspective I don’t have any concerns - you have to learn to cope with it and experience is the best way you learn,” Hardwick said.

Characterless footy club. AFL should pull the pin on them.
Brayshaw erred they kept North in Melb for 2000 fans yet they gave up 100 million to move up there and now they are looking at Cairns, Tassie, playing home games in Perth or Adelaide against the Eagles and Crows.
Brayshaw and the rest of the board have lied to their members. Would have been more beneficial for them to have moved up North. Will forever be beggars.

RICHMOND has signed a deal to play a home game against the Gold Coast in Cairns in each of the next three seasons.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou announced today the matches would be played at Cazaly Stadium, which will get a $6.7 million upgrade.
The matches will be played in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons, with next year's clash set to be played during the day before upgraded lighting is installed in time for the 2012 fixture.
“We are really happy to be part of such a big step forward for our game in Far North Queensland. To be able to take the Richmond brand into such an important market as well as provide a new experience for our young playing group is fantastic," Richmond football manager Craig Cameron said.
“For us, it is the best of both worlds: it gives our fans in Queensland a chance to see us live and we have protected the rights of our members who will still have access to 11 games in Melbourne,” Cameron said.
NAB Cup games have been played at the venue in recent years but Cairns has never hosted a match for premiership points.
“The AFL is very excited to be able to take premiership matches into Far North Queensland for the first time," Demetriou said.
The AFL had previously announced Gold Coast would have a bye in Round 1 next year and play the Tigers in Round 2, but Demetriou said today the date of the first Cairns game would be revealed when the full fixture is announced in late October

Tigers strike Cairns deal

Richmond Football Club will further enhance its national brand after agreeing to play home games against the Gold Coast Suns in Cairns over the next three years.
The deal to play games in Cairns was struck between Richmond, the AFL and the Queensland Government and was announced today.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Richmond Football Club to further develop its position as a national brand while at the same time protecting the rights of our members,” Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said.
“We will provide our members with guaranteed access to 11 games in Melbourne so they will enjoy all the benefits they would normally get as valued members of the club.
“At the same time we are able to explore innovative ways to grow our Club. We have some ambitious goals we have set ourselves and they won’t be achieved if we don’t look outside the square and be prepared to do things differently.”
Cairns boasts a 10,000-capacity stadium that has hosted a number of major events, including international cricket matches. Australian Rules participation in the region is growing rapidly with almost 7,000 active participants across all segments in 2010.
By 2011, the population of Cairns is predicted to be 182,000, making it significantly larger than major Victorian provincial cities Ballarat and Bendigo and comparable to the City of Geelong.
“Richmond Football Club has outstanding support across Australia and this game, together with our game in Darwin, will continue to provide us great opportunities to reach out to our existing supporter base while developing the next generation of fans,” Gale said.
“We also believe that these opportunities will underpin the development of our football team. We have a young list that will benefit from being together on the road. Good teams need to perform interstate and this will be a valuable learning experience.”

Better be at the expense of that turd hole or I will be pi55ed off man.
The benefit I want from being 'Valued member of the club' is HOME games at the MCG - end of story .....

Great if it helps reduce our debt level and is only short term, and would be a fantastic gesture/improvement if those members domiciled in Queensland get to use their memberships for these games and not miss out to cater for Melbourne-based members like we have in the past.
And a small geographical point for Craig Cameron - it will really only benefit fans in Far North Queensland - the majority of our Queensland fans reside in the South East corner and Melbourne is closer to us than Cairns!
-
Some questions
1) does it come at the 'expense' of an Ethiad home game?
2) does it mean we don't play the Sunnyboys in R2?
-

1 - RFC Official on BF states "You'll get 11 Melbourne games correct, and we're fighting for every one of our games to be at the MCG. We're hopeful this will happen come late Oct when the schedule is announced. " Very open ended this is! Could easily mean we play interstate 11 times ??????
2 - Pretty sure round 2 against the cancer heads will not be on anymore, they want their unveiling at the Gabba so will rule us out.
-
From the Cairns Post:
An exact date for next year's clash will not be confirmed until the AFL releases its 2011 draw, but it is known the match will be played during the day, most likely in July.
-
Actually come to think of it we could play them round 2 at the Gabba their home game. Then in July our "Home" game in Cairns.
-
the cancer heads
LMAO :thumbsup
-
They will be very very unlikely to play the Cairns games early or late in the season due to the weather - mid season is a Lay Down Misere. And it won't affect our R2 game because that's a GC home game.

Rumour = $800,000 for this game going to RFC :clapping - $2.4 Million over 3 years for the 3 games. Thats the rumour.

There would have been a cost involved in getting access to three away games for members. The home sides would have wanted some compensation. How much that would be would be any ones guess.

Outstanding. Melbourne members don't miss out because they get games in compensation and we get a big chunk of money to throw at the $5m debt. Win win big time and it's not like we're losing blockbuster home games.

Yes this correct
We will have 9 home matches and 2 away matches that will be treated as "home games" for members to compensate for the 2 interstate home games

I hate to rain on everyone's parade but from a purely operational/accounting perspective to suggest that the money for these games will automatically go to paying off our "debt" is fanciful. The money will go to operational revenues and will be used for what it needs to be used for in the operations of the club if anything is left over then yeap we pay of the debt.
The Club would be very silly to promise to pay of the debt when it maybe needed for other things
I have mentioned this before but this debt thing although not a great thing to have is not as dire as the Caros of this world make it out to be. Because the RFC unlike the Demons or Roos for example don't have the struggles to service the debt (read paying the interest bill) that the other clubs do.
-
true, WP, debit in a business sense in not necessarily a bad thing, particularly if you have much more assets than debit. AS for whether the extra money itself is directly used to service debit is probably a moot point as one way or another extra income will allow the debit to be repaid quicker, unless spending is increased in another area.

Yes, very true WP but I didn't say that the whole amount would be earmarked for the debt alone. It means an extra ~$1m to our bottom line which gives us more opportunity to reduce our debt - one of the identified aims of the Gale Plan - and that can only be a good thing.

Agree smokey but and it's a big but what seems to be getting lost in this discussion is the fact that we already behind on our bootom line for 2011 because we've lost the nett profit from the Royal Oak. I would suggest that the monies we are getting for selling home games is in part just replacing those $$$ anyway.
I want the debt gone as much as anyone but I just don't get as wound up about it as the Caros of this world do. This is what I do for a living (which I better get back to BTW ;D) and as it currently stands I would rather the Club be where they are today funding the footy department properly with a manageable debt than what we've done in the past
-
If Melbourne can get rid of their debt with their pi55ant supporter base, how come we can't do the same ??????????
Need to get something going in this direction also and get this problem solved and then we can all go to the G on Saturday arvo like times of old.
Pile it on Tigers - Chuck everything on the fire and see what burns, let's just get this crap out of the way.
-

Royal Oak would have been more profitable than that Tony M
It's the Wantirna Club that doesn't make much for the CLub - The Royal Oak was a good earner for the Club
Don't know WP, just what I've been told, sounds realistic to me going by what a lot of other clubs make from pokies, its a decent income but not a cash cow unless you're carlton and spoon fed by mathieson ::)
Wantirna makes nowhere near that unfortunately

Cairns showdown in July
The Cairns Post
Saturday, October 30, 2010
FOOTY fans should keep Saturday, July 16 free in their diaries next year because that is the day the AFL officially lands in Cairns.
The AFL released its 2011 draw yesterday, disclosing the date for the Round 17 Richmond versus Gold Coast match at Cazalys.
As expected, the clash is a day game and will start at 2.10pm.
It is the first competition-round AFL game to be played in Cairns, which has previously hosted NAB Cup and practice matches.
The fixture, the first of three to be played between the clubs over three years at Cazalys, was announced last month, but the date was not revealed until yesterday.
Suns player Charlie Dixon, who grew up in Cairns, already has the game circled on his calendar.
Dixon played in the Suns’ VFL match against Bendigo at Cazalys in July and does not want to miss the chance to play AFL in front of his home fans.
"It’s a big goal of mine to play in that game," he said.
"There were a fair few people there last time we played in July and now that there
are going to be two proper AFL teams playing, I think it’ll be even bigger.
"We had a good win up there last time we were there and hopefully we can do that again."
AFL Cairns president Gary Young will meet Tigers and Suns officials over the next fortnight to begin planning for the game.
Now a date has been set, Young said the league could also start working with local business and tourism operators to maximise Cairns’ exposure.
"We’ve got the date, it’s going ahead and it’s huge, not just from a footy follower’s point of view, but also from the city’s point of view," he said.
"We want to attract as many people as we can from Melbourne for this game.
"We’ll be working with local operators to put together packages and programs to entertain them outside of football so they’ll want to stay up here an extra four or five days."
