Title: Rate a Tiger's year - 10. Shane Edwards?
Post by: one-eyed on September 22, 2010, 12:35:41 PM
Next up is Shane Edwards.

Played all 22 games in his fourth season of AFL to take his career tally to 69. 2010 was the first time he cracked the 20+ disposal mark and he did so on 8 occasions including his best effort for the year in R18 vs Adel where he had 28 possessions plus 8 tackles in our win at the M.C.G. Edwards also increased his tackle stats this year including a massive 11 tackles against Port in the wet at Footy Park.

How did we all rate Edwards' year?

Really surprised me with his ability to constantly find space in traffic and congestion. Is a very elusive player that avoids tackles rather than busts them.

Thought he had little to offer but this year shows he has does have a bit to offer. More than happy that I was wrong about him.

If he can improve even more and become a little more consistent then he will become a very valuable player for RFC.

Pleased with his improvement.  I was a fence-sitter with Edwards and wasn't convinced of his capacity to make it but he had a good year considering his start point and showed enough to make me believe.

Regularly pulling my hair out with Edwards running around in cricles and getting smashed.

Very happy to see him this year impact some games, prove elusive and run.

Looking forward to 2011.

8 from me.

We'll surprise a few next year.

Edwards and Cotchin with full pre-seasons will be dangerous.

7 with a bullet from me.

Rapidly improving, just needs to iron out a few kinks yet.

Has had his critics on these boards but I have always been a fan & look forward to seeing what he can provide in 2011.

He just keeps improving, had been consistant this year and  loves the club.

I am not sure what he needs to do but if he has another good year it might just show a few more that they were mistaken.

Most improved player at the Club IMHO

And after our B&F it would appear our coaches agree with me  ;D

Can we win a GF with him in the team WP, what would happen at the most important part of a final if he were thrown around like a rag doll and we lost.... very good year yes but......

Answer to part 1 - is YES

And my answer to part 2 is this: if we or any team was to lose a grand final because 1 player "got thrown around like a rag doll" then honestly they don't deserve to win a flag

If the Saints "human face washer" Farren Ray gets thrown around the MCG on Saturday and St Kilda loses is it becasue of Ray? I don't think so  ;D

Has had a taste of it now and I would really like to see him make a permanent move into the midfield in 2011.

Been championing this kid since he arrived. Gave him an 8. Would have got 9 if he'd grown his locks back in the pre-season. He's going to be a wonderful player.

The thing with players like edwards, WAT, is that they rely on avoiding tackles rather than busting them. At times this year Edwards showed an ability to sidestep, duck and generally slip tackles that is up there with the best slippery turds in the league.

When players like betts and co tear us a new one, their lack of bulk dosn't seem to hinder them at all

The vast improvement of Shane Edwards, in his fourth year of AFL football, is highlighted in a summary of the Richmond players’ key statistical categories for the 2010 season.

Edwards, who received the Tigers’ Most Improved Player award at last week’s Jack Dyer Medal presentation night, finished top 10 in 11 of the 12 categories listed below.

He was No. 5 at the Club for kicks (218), No. 5 for handballs (196), No. 4 for total disposals (414), No. 3 for contested possessions (166), No. 7 for uncontested possessions (251), No. 10 for total marks (61), equal No. 9 for goals (7), equal No. 4 for clearances (61), No. 5 for inside-50 entries (54), No. 6 for rebound-50s (39) and No. 3 for tackles (76).

The sole listed-category, where the 21-year-old didn’t make the top 10, was contested marks.

Has racked up possies playing a non-contested loose HBF role.
Disposal and decision making remains questionable. Goal kicking when forward is very inconsistent.
Gets rag dolled and cannot stick tackles on mid sized forwards.
Does not have the pace or discipline to stay with the zippy forward pockets (eg Milne / Matera) that have plagued RFC.
There are better options at RFC for the outside HBF role at RFC in Lids & Connors.

Hey DARTH, I almost always agree with your views on footy I recall from BF, but on this I think you missed an entire season and are referring to his 09 season
BTW hope everything is well with your lad mate  :)

Are you for real Darth Vader?
Edwards' had a very good year, hence why he won our most improved award.
He became a real contributor in the midfield. A very slippery customer and still has scope for improvement.
I gave him an 8 (relative to his previous seasons.)  :thumbsup
