We currently have pick 29 as our second rounder but that looks like being pushed back into the 30s :-\ if all the clubs who received a GC compo pick use them in this draft.
It is becoming increasingly likely most clubs will use the compensation picks they receive for losing a contracted player to Gold Coast.
Adelaide, which received a pick at the end of the first round for Nathan Bock, is poised to use it now rather than bank it, even though that selection will be in the high 20s because of the compromised draft.
Port Adelaide is expected to use its Nathan Krakouer pick, while the Dogs could put their Jarrod Harbrow pick on the trade table.

I was wondering if this happened....lol my god, back to the stone ages for us, we finished near the bottom and end up with all the bottom picks lol

The GC would have to give away one of there picks i hope, because they've taken a player for that pick. I hope your not rite.
-
I wonder if some teams will claim their picks and then use those picks to trade for players rather than using their original draft picks, or vice versa, claim the picks but use their original picks to trade.
-
Ok what is bugging me is these picks, are they just conjured up new picks when they poach an uncontracted player or are they from the Goldcoast pool of picks?

Yep made up picks from a compensation pool which can be used anytime within the next 5 years.
So if I'm reading it right the draft order could be something like
1. GC
2. GC
3. GC
4. Geel (Ablett compo)
5. GC
6. WCE
7. GC
8. Rich
9. GC
10. Ess
11. GC

31. Port (Krakouer compo)

33. WB (Harbrow compo)
34. GC
35. WCE
36. Rich :P

I hope I'm reading it wrong or these clubs hold onto their compo picks until 2012 when the draft order is normalised again otherwise we'll only have two picks inside the top 50 :help
-
I don't think Geelong can use their early first round pick until 2012 when the draft isn't compromised
-
The players left at 26 will be far better than 36 onwards
:(
-
1. GC
2. GC
3. GC
4. Geel (Ablett compo)
5. GC
6. WCE

How would we go from #6 to #8 by Geelong getting 1 pick? Is pick #5 right?
-
Yeah, I think you've given GC an extra pick there MT.
Perhaps this is the reason that the club is looking at trading this year. If we think about it last year which was only a slightly compromised draft we went full boar on kids. This year in a very compromised draft we are looking at possible trades. Our second round pick is going to be close to last years third round pick
Compare that to brisbane who traded heavily in the slightly compromised draft and are now looking to increase their picks in the heavily compromised draft. I thinks they got it around the wrong way.

Yeah that's how I read it and what Andy D said when he tried to explain their logic on the compo draft picks

I thought the Cats picks would look something like the above??
So if the Cats choose to use the picks in 2012 and they, for example, finish last, They would have 1, 2 (compo) and a compo pick before the team that finished 8th.
I also would have thought that the Eagles having a 2nd round priority pick, it wouldn't be before the first round compo picks.

I think he is correct as the GC have set pick numbers and others have to be fit in around them. So if Geelong get given this compo and decide to use it this year then we get pushed back 2 places. Sucks but I think its correct.

fluffy i dont think that is right...

That's how i read it wayne.
they get a mid 1st round pick and then another one AFTER their 1st round pick, they'd be silly to use these this or next draft
-
I agree with you Scarface :)
-
I've checked the AFL site and yep I was wrong about the first of Geelong's compo first round picks. It's meant to be alongside Geelong's normal first rounder (24 if used this year). So wayne you're right with Geelong having picks 24 & 25.
One of the selections can be taken after Geelong’s usual first-round pick (dependant of ladder position), while the other will be placed in the middle of the first round regardless of where the Cats finish on the ladder.

Yeah I wasn't sure if the Eagles priority pick was a post-first rounder or a pre-second rounder if that makes sense. I've checked the compensation the Dogs received for Harbrow and it says end of round one so I think you've got the right draft order above wayne :thumbsup.
In any case what this all means is our 2nd pick has dropped down to 36 (effectively a 3rd round pick in a normal draft) and we'll only have 2 picks inside the top 50 if we don't trade for more picks. That's going to really limit the number of delistings we'll be able to make this year. Picks 6 and 36 will only replace retirees Cuz and Simmo. So delistings like Jordie, Thomson and Polo will end up being replaced by late picks 53, 70 and 87/PSD. Hardly a guarantee we'll improve our list with genuine quality via those late picks :-\. We really need to trade for more early (1st/2nd round) picks or this is going to be a lean draft for us.
Now where are all the anti-tankers who said winning a couple of extra games in the second half of the past two seasons was more important than gaining priority picks. Nah missing out on an extra pick inside the top 20 last year and an extra pick inside the top 5 this year doesn't hinder or even hurt our list rebuilding :banghead.

No it doesn't. And stop hitting your head on that brickwall - it will hurt after a while. ;D

Missing out on the free chance to add two more talented kids more likely these days found at the higher end of the draft while at the same time being restricted to replacing our delistings with mostly speculative late picks doesn't matter. Silly me :wallywink

Thanks for that. I am much happier with that comp but if I was a Geelong supporter I would not be happy. I will also add that we dont seem to have lost anybody to the gold coast yet, that might get us a extra pick if that happens.

Thats because the National Draft was developed by the AFL as a money making exercise to increase the TV rights.
Not to help struggling clubs re-build their playing lists in a sporting act of socialism.

just throwing in a theory about why we have a drafting system if it isn't used to help struggling clubs to rebuild their playing list.
