Hawthorn last night approached the Bulldogs officially for the first time, wanting to progress talks on snaring Josh Hill.
Hill's manager Peter Lenton yesterday informed the Hawks that Hill wanted a fresh start there.
Richmond was one of two other clubs wooing Hill.
The Dogs and Hawks will now step up negotiations, with Hill's value likely to be a sticking point.
