Title: Foxtel Cup - state leagues club knockout comp.
Post by: one-eyed on October 16, 2010, 05:21:12 AM
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/-/wafl/8138807/wafl-backs-state-leagues-knockout-comp/

The WAFL has thrown its support behind a new national competition which would pit Australia's best State league clubs against each other in front of a national television audience.

The Leagues Championship Cup, which has the support of the AFL, the conditional support of the VFL and the financial backing of Fox Sports, could start as early as next April.

The knockout competition would include 16 teams - all finalists in the previous season - from the WAFL, VFL, SANFL, Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT.

An eight-team competition is also being considered, but it's believed WA, SA and Victoria can each provide four sides, with one from each of the other States, in the preferred model.

It is planned for games to be played when participating teams have a bye in their local league, with matches scheduled and televised on Saturday between the afternoon and evening AFL fixtures.

The State leagues have to inform the AFL of their decision today. A green light could come as early as next week.

Probably wishful thinking given I don't think there's any visitor changerooms now at Punt Rd after the redevelopment but it would be great if one day this LCC lead to a return of footy to Punt Rd Oval.

Good to hear that there is a strong chance of this LCC going ahead in 2012 and if it does we'll see a return to the curtain-raiser at least for Saturday night games. Being able to watch Coburg before Richmond will make it worth it again to turn up early rather than twiddling your thumb for an hour or so.
Title: 2nd-tier "Leagues Championship Cup" plan to get green light (Herald-Sun)

Cup plan to get green light

A SECOND-TIER knockout competition featuring the best non-AFL teams looks certain to start next season."There are some very positive signs that the national competition will get up," AFL Victoria chairman Grant O'Riley said.

"Once the announcement is made, a lot of the logistical things will fall into line."

The FA Cup-style competition is tipped to feature 16 clubs, including the Greater Western Sydney Giants, and will be called the Champions League.

I don't understand why GWS is in this comp? Also have heard the SANFL may be pulling out.

If they play Centrals at Elizabeth Oval that may seriously happen. Their bus will definitely be on bricks in the local caravan park by 1/4 time.

They should be able to hold their own against some of the sides (might even get a win against some). However, I'd love to see the arrogant idiots lose by 100+ points. :pray Don't care if they're representing Tassie.

Claremont shouldn't have much trouble beating them.

Clarence Arrogant? Nooooooo, Don't all clubs hire a helicopter after wining the grand final just to fly back to the oppositions home ground (York Park) so they can pee on the center square. Surley that's just the done thing, I wouldn't say they were arrogant :lol :lol :lol :lol :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin :lol :lol :lol :lol

They did beat Norf in a way, North Launceston coached by Red Legs legend Garry McIntosh, North went pretty much the whole season undefeated and basically forced the hand of the TFL to change the venue for the Grand final to the north of the state for the first time in state football history. Clarence were suitably un impressed and after upsetting North by a couple of points a few of the lads decided to charter a helicopter a few days later, when they landed they did there thing in right in view of the local media :lol You have to love Tassie's North South rivalry :cheers :cheers

Surely AFL listed players in the VFL, SANFL and WAFL won't be allowed to play in these games otherwise these smaller clubs from weaker states will get pulverised by 100+ points. The whole point of this comp. is to help footballers who are not in the AFL system but could possibly play at the highest level.

The top 5 SANFL clubs aren't interested in this (read not enough money offered). So the bottom SANFL clubs like West, Port and South Adelaide may only participate instead.

I would have thought the opposite. Expose them to players of AFL quality and see how they compete. Anything other than clubs fielding their full strength sides will be a joke.

That's a fair argument for VFL, SANFL and WAFL clubs who all have AFL listed players in their squads but the smaller state league clubs will be lambs to the slaughter if they are playing against sides with half their team made up of AFL-listed players. I still remember Swan Districts sending over their ressies side for a Escort Cup game back in '82 and we won by 186 points with Roach kicking a lazy 10 playing only one half. There needs to be some compromise between finding diamonds in the rough for AFL club recruiters and having a competitive state league cup competition.

The VFL, SANFL and WAFL clubs have now been confirmed.

Victoria will be represented by the recent three-time premiers North Ballarat, the Northern Bullants and Williamstown while Western Australia will put forward East Perth, Swan Districts and Claremont. South Australia will be represented by West Adelaide, Port Adelaide Magpies and North Adelaide.

The problem is the games even as curtainraisers are being played hours before the AFL game so there's no one at the ground yet. Foxtel however are telecasting these games on delay. If the games were played live when Foxtel telecasts them you'd then have a half-decent crowd at the ground especially in the second-half.

i went to that game and the Cats v Freo after   crowd figure was on the screen at 1300 early in the 4th  1\4   about par with a WAFL  game    certainly no support for Nth Ballarat  just a few feral Royals  but most of crowd like me    went early to see what all the fuss of the Foxtel cup is all about good to have the oppertunity to watch players from other states 2nd tier footy   all n all a great 6hours at the footy

Do you think more people would have turned up to the Royals game if it had been played at their WAFL ground?

50-0 just after quarter time lol. Seriously they shouldn't allow the stronger state clubs to include AFL listed players as it just makes the game non-competitive. GWS will need more help than GC as well from the AFL and that's saying something.

Of course you can but can they do it in time? Need to remember there are kids playing Auskick that have more game time under their belts than Izzy. He's literally only played 4 games in his life. People look at him as a 22 year old but he should be treated as an under 10 with size  :lol
