Who will get iconic Tiger numbers?

Two of the most revered guernsey numbers in Richmond’s proud league football history - No. 4 and No. 12 - will be reactivated in 2011 . . .

And, you will be first to find out the latest recipients of these prized Tiger numbers when they are handed out in a special ceremony to be incorporated in the Club’s 2011 membership launch, this Friday, November 12.  richmondfc.com.au will be providing live coverage of the event from 2pm.

The Tiger is stirring in 2011, click here to become a member

No. 4 is the only number to have been worn in every one of the 10 Richmond league premiership sides.  It was made particularly famous by Tiger ‘Immortal’ Royce Hart, who wore with such distinction it in four premierships - 1967, 1969, 1973 and 1974.

No. 12, of course, strikes a huge chord with Yellow and Black barrackers because of the mighty Matthew Richardson, who wore it throughout his magnificent 282-game, 800-goal career at Tigerland.  But long, long before ‘Richo’ arrived on the scene, a skinny bloke by the name of Jack Titus made the No. 12 his own, playing 294 games and booting a ‘lazy’ 970 goals in it, in a career spanning 18 seasons (1926-43).

The two numbers were ‘retired’ in 2010, but will be brought to life again in 2011, on the backs of two of Richmond’s most talented, young players.

Given that both numbers are steeped in tradition at Punt Road, considerable thought has gone into the new custodians.  The Club is confident the pair it has anointed will follow in the illustrious footsteps of those Tiger greats who have worn the numbers previously.

Royce Hart and Matthew Richardson will be in attendance to hand out the No. 4 and No. 12 jumpers respectively.

12 = Martin
4 = Grigg

I always though Martin would be a number 4 but I don't think you can give 12 to anyone but Dustin.

Maybe Gourdis or Jackson?

Martin to get 4 for sure.  I reckon either Astbury, Nason or Vickery for 12.

Martin is one definitely.

I wouldn't think Grigg would walk straight into one, seeing he hasn't proven himself with us yet.

Shane Edwards???

I can only really think of Astbury that has earnt it.

Number 12 I'd like to see go to a genuine forward simply because this number was worn by both Richardson and Titus 2 of our best forwards and goal kickers in history. Jack Riewoldt has the number 8 which has history with Micheal Roach another great forward so hopefully he will keep that one, make it his own and forge his own history in the number 8 which he is doing.

Personally I believe it is too early to bring back the number 12, there are no real stand out forwards just yet, but if I had to give it to someone, I'd give it to Ben Griffiths.

Number 4 is a no brainer, Dustin Martin.

4. Martin
12. Astbury (perhaps Griffiths)

Shane Edwards???

Edwards already has an "iconic" number in 10 - made famous by the likes of Daffy, Gepp  :P

Seriously though it was Sheeds' number and it has some importance so I cannot see him getting a new one

4. Martin
12. Astbury (perhaps Griffiths)

I agree number 4 to Martin is a no brainer

12. I'd give to Astbury

Martin seems like the obvious choice for 4 but for some reason it just seems like the wrong number for him to me. I'd love to see him in 7.

Griff to wear 12. Big responsibility for him but I have a good feeling about this kid. He's going to be a monster and I can see him being 200 games+ with 800+ goals at the end of his career. I'm not even going to entertain the thought that his shoulders are going to let him down and ruin his career.

Martin is the only one that deseves a move atm, Nason still has a lot to prove and the others ditto.
Martin in 12 just has the right feel to it.

I read an interview with Hardwick saying he was trying to convince him, maybe he has?
No idea who else deserves it.
Post, Graham, Nason, Astbury, not for my money
Maybe everyone's favourite Dan connors

I thought Hardwick has a policy of earning the low numbers. I would love to see Martin 4 but it may not happen.

Yeah, Id have thought that Martin may have earned a lower number but probably not anyone else.
As there is someone else, Id see astbury as most likely with perhaps Nason a possibility of the young blokes currently with high numbers.

Martin has definitely earnt a lower number by being the best 1st year player since Lids, and I would hope that RFC maintains a policy of rewarding elite performance in the rookie year.

I would really enjoy seeing Jack Riewoldt in the number 4.

I would also give Martin #7 as it was vacant in 2010 and challenge Griffiths to earn the right to either the #8 or #12 by being a 200 game, 500+ goal kicker in the tradition of the great Taswegians (i know he is Friar so 8 + 4 = the 12).

Smart move. I hope he makes 41 his own famous number rather than living in the shadow of others to done a numeral.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.   ;D

Martin was in the No. at Bendigo.

Don't know who should get No.12, as it should go to a Forward.

No.4 would look great with Foley, however Foley has said he wanted to keep No.41.

No.7 I would give to a player that has been with Richmond for a little while. I would hand the No.7 to Morton.

Vickery has Bartlett's No.29 which is massive.

No.30? Francis Bourke?

I think off the top of my head, the number vacancies are;

1 (Newman), 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 22, 24, 27 (Hislop), 30, 31, 32.

There are some very awesome numbers available!

Huge honor for top Tiger cubs

Two of Richmond’s most exciting young players have become recipients of two of the most revered guernsey numbers in the Club’s proud league football history . . .

The Tigers’ Rising Star of 2010, Dustin Martin, moves from No. 36 into No. 4, while David Astbury, who also shone in his debut AFL season, goes from No. 39 to No. 12.

The significant number changes were announced today as part of the launch of the Club’s 2011 membership campaign.

Four-time Richmond premiership coach Tommy Hafey presented the No. 4 to Dustin Martin, while recently retired Tiger great Matthew Richardson presented the No. 12 to David Astbury.

This fits coach Damien Hardwick’s philosophy of ensuring new players earn their stripes with the Tigers, before being considered worthy of wearing any of the numbers steeped in tradition at Punt Road.

With the arrival of so many young players at the Club via the 2009 National Draft, several prestigious numbers were ‘retired’ for the year, including the famous No. 4 and No. 12.

But Martin and Astbury, on the back of their bold showings throughout the 2010 season, have now been elevated to esteemed number status at Tigerland.

Martin averaged 20.2 disposals per game in 21 appearances for Richmond during the 2010 season, polled six Brownlow Medal votes, won the Tigers’ Rising Star award, and finished fourth in the Club’s Best and Fairest award.  He was a revelation in the team’s midfield during the 2010 season, with his strong clearance work and ability to win the contested ball.

Astbury kicked three goals on debut against Melbourne in Round 4, but was subsequently shifted into defence, where he displayed great poise for such a young player. He ended up playing 17 games for the season and being earmarked as a future top-liner, due to his versatility, size, endurance, and all-round skills.

Given that both No. 4 and No. 12 have such an illustrious history at Richmond, considerable thought has gone into the new custodians.  The Club is confident the pair it has anointed will follow in the illustrious footsteps of those Tiger greats who have worn the numbers previously.

No. 4 is the only number to have been worn in every one of the 10 Richmond league premiership sides.  It was made particularly famous by Tiger ‘Immortal’ Royce Hart, who wore it with such distinction in four premierships - 1967, 1969, 1973 and 1974.  Royce’s successor in the No. 4 - Geoff Raines - was a pretty handy type of player himself.

Raines was handed the No. 4 upon Royce’s retirement and he handled the weight of expectations superbly, going on to win three Best and Fairests with Richmond, playing a key role in the 1980 premiership triumph, and subsequently being named in the Tigers’ Team of the Century.

Mind you, it’s not just champion spearheads, who have given the No. 12 its exalted status.  A rangy, tough, tattooed centre half-back from Footscray, by the name of Robert McGhie, was a key member of Richmond’s back-to-back premiership sides of 1973-74.

No. 4 in Richmond premierships
1920, 1921:  Hughie James
1932, 1934:  Maurie Sheahan
1943:  Ray Steele
1967, 1969, 1973, 1974:  Royce Hart
1980:  Geoff Raines

No. 12 in Richmond premierships
1920:  Dan Minogue
1932, 1934:  Jack Titus
1967:  Alan ‘Bull’ Richardson
1973, 1974:  Robert McGhie

Tigers give Dustin Martin famed guernsey No. 4
Mike Sheahan
Herald Sun
November 13, 2010

FORTUNATELY for Richmond, Dustin Martin is a young man with a body and temperament beyond his years.

The club yesterday ordained the imposing teenager the face of its future, giving him the most famous yellow and black jumper of the post-Jack Dyer era.

Martin, 19, will wear the No. 4 guernsey worn not only by the great Royce Hart, but the only number carried in all 10 of the club's AFL premierships from 1920-80.

And the Tigers enlisted four-time premiership coach Tom Hafey to make the presentation at Punt Rd at the launch of "The Tiger is Stirring" membership campaign.

Not only did Hafey declare himself a Martin fan, he said Ray Byrne - regional manager of Martin's junior club, the Bendigo Pioneers, and a former Carlton, Collingwood and Geelong player - told him earlier in the day Martin would be a best-and-fairest winner and captain at Richmond.

It just so happens midfielder Martin, at 187cm and 86kg, is exactly the same dimensions as Hart at the peak of his powers as the game's pre-eminent centre half-forward in the late 1960s and early '70s.

Wow, does this kid have a load to carry for someone with 21 games to his name.

David Astbury, another 19-year-old, was given the No. 12 guernsey worn most recently by Matthew Richardson and previously by another Richmond legend, Jack "Skinny" Titus, who kicked more goals (970) than even Richo (800).

Both boys were suitably humbled in front of teammates and coaches. Ironically, Astbury sees himself as a defender in the Nathan Bock mould rather than a future Richo.

Martin told compere and former player Nathan Brown: "Hopefully I can keep the tradition going and be the next No. 4 to win the premiership."

Hart and champion centreman Geoff Raines wore the number in Richmond's five premierships from 1967-80.

Coach Damien Hardwick is keen on rewarding young players on deeds rather than expectations.

Martin may have been taken at No. 3 in the 2009 national draft, but he played his first season in No. 36.

It's consistent with the coach's own career. He started at Essendon in No. 39, graduating to No. 11 after four years. He later wore 11 at Port Adelaide, and was a premiership player at both clubs.

Ben Nason, another one-year player, has been promoted from No. 47 to No. 22.

Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale told players, staff and influential supporters the club was looking for 10,000 new members next year in the second leg of a highly ambitious bid for 75,000 members by 2014.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/tigers-give-dustin-martin-famed-guernsey-no-4/story-e6frf9jf-1225952957573

Richardson, who played 282 games and kicked 800 goals for the Tigers, handed Astbury his jumper as part of the club's 2011 membership launch at Punt Road. Club legend Tom Hafey was on hand to give Martin, a Rising Star nominee this year, the No. 4 jumper.

''If you want to survive in the AFL you've got to work hard and the guys that work the hardest and the longest hang around and have a long career,'' Richardson said.
