North and South Korea exchange dozens of artillery shells across their tense western sea border, in one of the most serious incidents since the Korean War ended without a ceasefire in 1953.

bloody hell, when are they gonna sort their poo out :banghead

North Korea always does cra*p like this. most of the time it is for extra aid or to stop the south doing something near the border which in this case seems to be the reason. unfortunaly though it always works in favour of North Korea no doubt they'll score some extra aid for this as they'll use it as a way to enter 6 nation talks again.

The Korean War never officially ended in 1953. An armistice was signed because the war became a stalemate so the front line became the agreed border between North and South and the DMZ is 2km either side of it. This is just a continuation of the hostilities that started 60 years ago :P. The North claim these western border islands should be theirs and this isn't the first time they have attacked the South over them.

This attack would also have something to do with the new kid on the block in North Korea trying to show he's as much a Western-hating psycho leader as his father was :help.
Last person to leave North Korea turn the one remaining light off ;D

As an aside this will hurt Korea's 2022 World Cup bid as its main selling point to FIFA was building more friendly ties between the two Koreas including playing some games in the North.

Wasn't it a "police action" as war was never declared?

Yep in the US it was called a "police action" as there was no declaration of war by the US Congress.

North tho seems powerful has lost its two best ally's Russia and china ... if war was to brake out tho many casulaties North would gte effec up by China because they just need a reason.. scary thought but :-\
-
China will still want the buffer state that North Korea provides to remain.
-
Can we have Stephen Smith back as Foreign Affairs Minister please :pray
Rudd worries me more than he normally does :help
-
Rudd can keep dribbling on his crap China arent going to pay attention to him.
Having North Korea as a buffer state is in China's interests the last thing they want is Western forces being able to sit on there border. Plus they might look at the soviet union as example of if your buffer state collapses. Wasn't long after East Germany fell the hole Soviet Union did.

The Americans and South Koreans are about to do joint military exercises. If the North Koreans stupidly attack a US vessel then the proverbial will really hit the fan :help. South Koreans are already burning effigies of tiga's avatar.

North Korea will continue to antagonise and it will be on
God help us all if that happens!

Let's hope China can pull the nutcases in North Korea into line.

Surely North Korea arent dumb enough to try and shot artillery into the sea if a US aircraft naval battle group is in the area.

A major shift in attitude from China towards North Korea if true. Hopefully the North Korea regime does collapse from within without China propping it up.

Seoul threatens air strikes against N Korea
Seoul has vowed to use its jet fighters to strike North Korea if it attacks again, making its strongest threat to hit targets in the country for several years.
South Korea’s government has faced severe criticism for its weak retaliation after the Pyongyang’s bombardment of a South Korean island last week in which four people were killed. Kim Tae-young, the outgoing defence minister, said the government had not hit back with F-15s and F-16s through fear of triggering a full war.
But his successor, Kim Kwan-jin, warned on Friday that: “In case of further provocations, we will definitely strike North Korea by air”.

Just when you think North Korea's leader and family couldn't get any more bizarre they go and have plastic surgery to look like each other ??? :lol
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speculation abounds that the North Korean regime's heir apparent has had plastic surgery in an attempt to resemble his grandfather Kim Il-Sung.
The theory surfaced after the first official photos of Kim Jong-un, the 27-year-old son of Kim Jong-il, were released last week.
"In the images, the family resemblance between Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-un is obvious," The Telegraph has reported.
"The youngest in the Kim dynasty has the same chubby cheeks as his grandfather, a double chin and the familiar mouth that turns down at the ends.
"He also apparently favours his predecessor's preference for having his hair cut very short at the sides and swept back on top.
"The images are in stark contrast to previous photographs, which depict Kim as a slender teenager who looks nothing like his paternal grandfather."
South Korean newspapers claimed Kim Jong-un underwent surgery to boost his standing with the public.
"The Dong-A Ilbo newspaper reported that Pyongyang was hoping to cement Kim's position as the country's next leader through a 'reincarnation of North Korea's late founder'," The Telegraph said.
