Good - bad - indifferent - dangerous - we have a right to know?
What's your opinion?
I personally have a bet each way on good and but, but think they're treading on dangerous ground.
Their latest caper:
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/world/wikileaks-set-to-release-250000-documents/story-e6frf7lf-1225962494119
SPYING by the US on UN officials and sustained calls of Arab leaders to launch an attack on Iran are among the main revelations in the latest Wikileaks document release.
The US State Department has a damage limitation exercise underway after the release of some 250,000 cables which reveal secret diplomatic backroom plans and frank assessments of world leaders.
One of the most damaging is a directive issued in Hillary Clinton’s name to US diplomats, ordering forensic details collected on top UN officials, including the secretary-general, Ban Ki-Moon, seeking their passwords and other means of access to their private communications networks.
Another cable quotes a source as saying China’s top political leaders ordered the hacking attacks on Google’s network there, and that it was carried out by government IT experts along with what the New York Times calls "internet outlaws" who have been attacking the online systems of companies from America and other countries since 2002.

The documents also contain an allegation of "inappropriate behaviour" by a member of the British royal family.
Australia has not featured in the documents released so far, although Mrs Clinton raised the leak with Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd in a phone call last week.
Tensions with Iran are likely to run high this week, with the cables revealing leaders of other countries in the Middle East urging the US to launch an airstrike to debilitate the rogue nation’s nuclear program.
Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah repeatedly calls in one cable for the US to "cut the head off the snake" and stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
As was the case with two previous major document releases by Wikileaks, the website provided advance access to a number of media organisations including The New York Times and Britain’s Guardian newspaper ahead of their release, officially scheduled for 8.30am AEDT.
The New York Times reports that the "anticipated disclosure of the cables is already sending shudders through the diplomatic establishment, and could conceivably strain relations with some countries, influencing international affairs in ways that are impossible to predict".
The White House has condemned Wikileaks’ decision to release the files, calling it "dangerous and reckless action".
"By releasing stolen and classified documents, WikiLeaks has put at risk not only the cause of human rights but also the lives and work of these individuals," the White House said.

Good - bad - indifferent - dangerous - we have a right to know?
All of the above depending on what is being leaked. You wouldn't want any military plans leaked that put our soldiers lives at risk. Leaking what Arab leaders think of Iran is dangerous as the Iranian leader is up there with the North Koreans in the loopy stakes and he will use this as propaganda to remain in power :help.
-
will Arab leaders trust USA with as much now they know whatever they say can be leaked in the future which would possibly strength there enemies. example Iran's leader will use this as propaganda to remain in power and invest more in military and nuclear bombs as FNM has already pointed out.

I think what Wikileaks has done is tested some ideals that the American people proudly claim as their own. For example, what is the difference between Wikileaks receiving information from whistleblowers and the NY times receiving the same information? The attempt to charge Wikileaks with espionage, rather than identifying the whistleblowers really destroys the suggestion that American society is built on a freedom of the press.

The media think it's great. Wikileaks exposes fodder for them to write about but with no responsibility.
Long after Julian has spent his 40 years in solitary confinement, they'll still be writing about Cablegate

Julian Assange is a great man. If you listen to him talk he is extremely intelligent, has a consistent philosophy that removing secrecy empowers citizens. He has broken no laws in regards too the leaks and has done the homework. For example, the reason they operate from Sweden is that it is against the law for Swedish publications to divulge their sources. The IT infrastructure is set up such that leakers leave no digital fingerprints. So if the Americans were to pressure him to reveal exactly who they are, 1) he couldn't do it and 2) it would be an assault on Swedish law. This is all US chest beating, a bunch of old dudes in Washington who don't understand technology and its capacity to change society.
It is a shame Julia G doesn't have the courage to stand up for an Australian who is innocent (even on the sexual assault charges he is innocent until proven guilty), but seems more intent on bending over for Barry O (what a weird fetish that would be - black on ginger). I hope he sues her flaming red labia off.

Assange is copping all the poop for the leaks, but that doesn't stop the print media from jumping all over them.
And what's come out about Rudd, for example, that we didn't know already!

Assange has been release from jail by the High Court in London
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/julian-assange-released-vows-wikileaks-to-fight-on/story-e6frg6so-1225972511111
Justice Duncan Ouseley rejected an appeal against Mr Assange's bail by Swedish authorities, who claimed if he was set free he might flee rather than face charges in Sweden that he allegedly committed four sex offences against two women in what began as consensual sexual encounters.
Justice Ouseley said one reason he believed Mr Assange was unlikely to abscond was that the allegations against him in Sweden did not seem to be "a cast iron case... so he has some prospects of success".
Evidence that one Swedish prosecutor felt there was no case against Mr Assange before another prosecutor disagreed and decided to pursue the matter suggested that the case "would be one that could be resisted by an innocent man," said Justice Ouseley.

The charge is that he refused to wear a condom!
un stuffing believable.
One of the women stalked him.
Scary poo.

Assange is 100% innocent.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/feb/24/julian-assange-extradition-sweden-verdict
Julian Assange to be extradited to SwedenWikiLeaks founder handed verdict at Belmarsh magistrates court
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is to be extradited to Sweden to face allegations of rape and sexual assault.
Assange has been fighting extradition since he was arrested and bailed in December. He has consistently denied the allegations, made by two women in August last year.
Howard Riddle, the chief magistrate, delivered his ruling at a hearing at Belmarsh magistrates court in London. It is unlikely to be the end of the matter, however, because an appeal is expected, which would delay the final decision until the summer at the latest.
At a two-day hearing earlier this month, his legal team argued that Assange would not receive a fair trial in Sweden. They said the European arrest warrant (EAW) issued by Sweden was invalid because the Australian had not been charged with any offence and that the alleged assaults would not be legitimate extraditable offences.
Assange fears that an extradition to Sweden would make it easier for Washington to extradite him to the US on possible charges relating to the release by WikiLeaks of leaked US embassy cables.
If this was to happen, Sweden would have to ask permission from the UK for the onward extradition. No such charges have been laid, though the website's activities are under investigation in the US.
The Swedish prosecutor, represented in court by the British Crown Prosecution Service, argued that despite the lack of charge, Assange was being sought for prosecution rather than merely for questioning, which meant the warrant was valid.
The most serious of the four allegations relates to an accusation that Assange, during a visit to Stockholm in August, had sex with a woman, Miss B, while she was sleeping and without a condom, and without her consent. Three counts of sexual assault are also alleged against another woman, Miss A. If found guilty of the rape charge he could face up to four years in prison.
Assange will now be detained in custody, because there is no system of bail in Sweden, until a possible trial or release.
The Australian ambassador to Sweden, Paul Stephens, wrote to the country's justice minister last week to insist that, if extradited, any possible case against Assange "would proceed in accordance with due process and the provisions prescribed under Swedish law, as well as applicable European and international laws, including relevant human rights norms".
EAWs were introduced in 2003 with the aim of making extradition swifter and easier between European member states. But campaigners have raised concerns about the application of the warrants, arguing that they are sometimes applied before a case is ready to prosecute, and that while they were originally intended to counter terrorism, their use has greatly increased. Seven hundred people were extradited from the UK under the system last year.

the only thing this bloke is guilty of is that he is a good honest man not like these peddo's that parade out streets, who end up getting away with everything.
This bloke is the story of the year so far for me.
-
Not over yet
No doubt it'll be appealed
-
No date for a trial so he could be in custody for a very long time (months at least). Overseas law is often different but it's very suss to detain someone for that long without charge.

Yep he is a good honest man ::)
Here's a bloke who's now suddenly calling himself an aussie again who you have to seriously question whether he actually even bothered to consider the consequences or the harm he was possibly going to inflict on the innocent people of the world (you know the ones average folks) with all his "wikileaks". His sole motivation was clearly about harming the most powerful leaders without a single thought to if could endanger others.
Yep he's a great bloke ::) :wallywink
-
Assange thinks he's a cult leader. Regardless of whether you agree with what Wikileaks is doing or not, it's hard not to notice that this bloke has let his "hero status" get the better of him, and his arrogance is just atrocious. Now that he's on trial, he's suddenly quite secretive about everything that's going on there. Very suspicious, maybe he's got something to hide? He should stop acting as though everyone hates poor Julian and grow up.
All of this isn't to say that transparency is a bad thing, just that Assange is not the person to be the face of working towards it!

The UN human rights panel has released its reasoning for finding WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been “arbitrarily detained” by Britain and Sweden since December 2010, and should be freed and compensated.
UK police, however, insist he still faces arrest. Downing St said the ruling was not binding and that the arrest warrant will remain in place.

Perhaps he thinks this is his only chance of seeing his kids again. His jail bound the second he walks into Sweden unless a deal is brokered.

Assange Statement on the US Election
8 November 2016
By Julian Assange
In recent months, WikiLeaks and I personally have come under enormous pressure to stop publishing what the Clinton campaign says about itself to itself. That pressure has come from the campaign’s allies, including the Obama administration, and from liberals who are anxious about who will be elected US President.
On the eve of the election, it is important to restate why we have published what we have.
The right to receive and impart true information is the guiding principle of WikiLeaks – an organization that has a staff and organizational mission far beyond myself. Our organization defends the public’s right to be informed.
This is why, irrespective of the outcome of the 2016 US Presidential election, the real victor is the US public which is better informed as a result of our work.
The US public has thoroughly engaged with WikiLeaks’ election related publications which number more than one hundred thousand documents. Millions of Americans have pored over the leaks and passed on their citations to each other and to us. It is an open model of journalism that gatekeepers are uncomfortable with, but which is perfectly harmonious with the First Amendment.
We publish material given to us if it is of political, diplomatic, historical or ethical importance and which has not been published elsewhere. When we have material that fulfills this criteria, we publish. We had information that fit our editorial criteria which related to the Sanders and Clinton campaign (DNC Leaks) and the Clinton political campaign and Foundation (Podesta Emails). No-one disputes the public importance of these publications. It would be unconscionable for WikiLeaks to withhold such an archive from the public during an election.
At the same time, we cannot publish what we do not have. To date, we have not received information on Donald Trump’s campaign, or Jill Stein’s campaign, or Gary Johnson’s campaign or any of the other candidates that fufills our stated editorial criteria. As a result of publishing Clinton’s cables and indexing her emails we are seen as domain experts on Clinton archives. So it is natural that Clinton sources come to us.
We publish as fast as our resources will allow and as fast as the public can absorb it.
That is our commitment to ourselves, to our sources, and to the public.
This is not due to a personal desire to influence the outcome of the election. The Democratic and Republican candidates have both expressed hostility towards whistleblowers. I spoke at the launch of the campaign for Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate, because her platform addresses the need to protect them. This is an issue that is close to my heart because of the Obama administration’s inhuman and degrading treatment of one of our alleged sources, Chelsea Manning. But WikiLeaks publications are not an attempt to get Jill Stein elected or to take revenge over Ms Manning’s treatment either.
Publishing is what we do. To withhold the publication of such information until after the election would have been to favour one of the candidates above the public’s right to know.
This is after all what happened when the New York Times withheld evidence of illegal mass surveillance of the US population for a year until after the 2004 election, denying the public a critical understanding of the incumbent president George W Bush, which probably secured his reelection. The current editor of the New York Times has distanced himself from that decision and rightly so.
The US public defends free speech more passionately, but the First Amendment only truly lives through its repeated exercise. The First Amendment explicitly prevents the executive from attempting to restrict anyone’s ability to speak and publish freely. The First Amendment does not privilege old media, with its corporate advertisers and dependencies on incumbent power factions, over WikiLeaks’ model of scientific journalism or an individual’s decision to inform their friends on social media. The First Amendment unapologetically nurtures the democratization of knowledge. With the Internet, it has reached its full potential.
Yet, some weeks ago, in a tactic reminiscent of Senator McCarthy and the red scare, Wikileaks, Green Party candidate Stein, Glenn Greenwald and Clinton’s main opponent were painted with a broad, red brush. The Clinton campaign, when they were not spreading obvious untruths, pointed to unnamed sources or to speculative and vague statements from the intelligence community to suggest a nefarious allegiance with Russia. The campaign was unable to invoke evidence about our publications—because none exists.
In the end, those who have attempted to malign our groundbreaking work over the past four months seek to inhibit public understanding perhaps because it is embarrassing to them – a reason for censorship the First Amendment cannot tolerate. Only unsuccessfully do they try to claim that our publications are inaccurate.
WikiLeaks’ decade-long pristine record for authentication remains. Our key publications this round have even been proven through the cryptographic signatures of the companies they passed through, such as Google. It is not every day you can mathematically prove that your publications are perfect but this day is one of them.
We have endured intense criticism, primarily from Clinton supporters, for our publications. Many long-term supporters have been frustrated because we have not addressed this criticism in a systematic way or responded to a number of false narratives about Wikileaks’ motivation or sources. Ultimately, however, if WL reacted to every false claim, we would have to divert resources from our primary work.
WikiLeaks, like all publishers, is ultimately accountable to its funders. Those funders are you. Our resources are entirely made up of contributions from the public and our book sales. This allows us to be principled, independent and free in a way no other influential media organization is. But it also means that we do not have the resources of CNN, MSNBC or the Clinton campaign to constantly rebuff criticism.
Yet if the press obeys considerations above informing the public, we are no longer talking about a free press, and we are no longer talking about an informed public.
Wikileaks remains committed to publishing information that informs the public, even if many, especially those in power, would prefer not to see it. WikiLeaks must publish. It must publish and be damned.

I'm happy for him personally.
Don't think I'd describe myself as over the moon.

It's quite funny, some may say ironic when you look at this situation
Our current opposition who get lauded for everything in the politics thread voted against intervening in getting Assange freed. Two Liberal senators went as far as to say today that he shouldn't be considered a hero and has bought the last 14 odd years on himself.
Our current government in particular the PM gets whacked for absolutely everything on the politics thread. But they have pushed for his release and have worked with the US government to facilitate it.
But I'm sure that alot of people won't be able to put their political bias aside and acknowledge any of this.
But whatever....

It’s against the rules to bring politics into the 4 word game
But a full post on it here is ok ?
Shouldn’t that post be in the politics thread ?
Or is it a different rule for this thread ?
