16-YEAR-OLD CORRIE DEBUTS’
Following in the footstep of Gavin Wanganeen who debuted for the Port Adelaide Magpies as a 16-year-old back in 1990, the South Adelaide football club unveiled another indigenous teenage talent in the opening round of the 2009 SANFL campaign.
In the Panthers first victory in the season opener Liam Corrie had his first taste of league football at the club home ground, Alan Hickinbotham oval, against West Adelaide, with South Adelaide winning the contest by 10 points.
“While he didn’t have a big impact on the game, Corrie copped a heavy knock in the second quarter and the opposition player was reported for forceful contact, (receiving a week’s suspension)” Panthers football manager Neale Sharpe, said.
“He pretty strong willed and despite being dazed, he wanted to get among the action again.
“As elusive, quick and clever player with his hands, Liam is a naturally talented young footballer, but there is still plenty of scope for improvement.
“A shy, level headed young man, he doesn’t seem to get overawed by much.
“With the new AFL rules he is not able to be drafted until 2010, as he was born in June 1992.”
It has been a meteoric rise for the 16-year as last year he was playing for the Morphett Vale football club, in the local suburban league south of Adelaide – the Southern Football League.
As a 15-year-old he was a member of the Emu’s Grand Final loss to the Cove.
There is no doubting his football heritage as Liam is a cousin of the Davey brothers, Aaron and Alwyn, along with also being related to former Brisbane and now Collingwood player Anthony Corrie.
At 175cm and 71 kgs, the lightly framed on baller and small forward has already been selected in the state under 18s academy, coached by Brenton Phillips.
“It was a tough initiation for Liam at league level, but he was a part of a winning side in his first game,” senior coach at this Noarlunga based club, Clay Sampson said.
“For his age and size, he is a tough little footballer.
“We were just wrapped with the way he prepared for the game and it was good for him to get a first taste of league football.
“He will start his career as a small forward, but with an improvement in fitness, he has the capacity, skill and awareness to play a role as a mid fielder.”
Sampson, an AFL premiership player himself with the Crows in 1997, played alongside Alwyn ‘Froggy” Davey at the Panthers before he got drafted, suggested while Liam Corrie will be bigger in size, he has the same attributes as the now Essendon footballer.
The SANFL talent manager Brenton Phillips agreed while the 16-year-old still had a lot to learn about the game, but he is a genuine talent.
“In time he will be able to play both the role of a small forward and on baller, but he needs to adjust to the pace of league football,” Phillips continued.
“Once he adjusts to the change of intensity, he’ll continue to grow.”

I don't think I've heard a bloke 186 cm tall and 90kg heavy described as "nippy"? Interesting choice of words.

Here's an explanation of the current rookie list rules.....
Rookie List
In response to the introduction of Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney, which will make its AFL debut in 2012, each club is allowed to place a maximum of nine players on its rookie list. These players can play in the pre-season competition or be promoted as a long-term injury replacement player during the home and away season.
Most rookie-listed players are recruited via the rookie draft, which takes place in December. But clubs also have the option to leave one rookie position ‘open’ after the rookie draft and that can be filled after the NAB Cup Grand Final and prior to the start of the premiership season. Clubs can have up to three trialling players as part of a training squad at any time during the summer as to be able to assess state league players, before making a decision on the eve of the season.
In addition, clubs have the capacity to attract elite athletes from other sports under the ‘Alternative Talent’ Rule. The player may not have been registered or played in an Australian Football competition for at least three years, and have played in a recognised elite sporting competition. Clubs may offer one spot under this rule. Player payments are outside the salary cap if he does not play senior football, with a pro-rata payment inside the cap for any senior matches. A player may remain on the ‘Alternative Talent’ list for three years, before being placed on the Primary List.

Cass spent the majority of his time in the Coburg reserves. He's done fairly well in the WAFL but there are surely better players to take than him?

He spent most of his time recovering from injury, whenever he'd step up a level his hammy would go ping and he'd start again.
Given he's had an injury free couple of years in the WAFL then I see no reason why we can't have him train with us, if the hammy goes at AFL level training then we can give someone else a go. It's not like these 3 are fixed until March, we can change the list, but it's only 3 at a time.
Pretty minor thing to be having a sook about IMO

No, just giving an opinion (strange to give an opinion on a forum I know ;D). Go to bed, it's past your bed time and your quite obviously getting angry. :-*

If he can stay on the track and play regular footy, Cass could be a handy player.
Massive kick and accurate also. Decent size body wise also.

One rookie spot up for grabs
By Tony Greenberg
Fri 10 Dec, 2010
Richmond is trialling three players, as part of its pre-season training squad, with one of them to fill the remaining spot on the Club’s rookie list.
This year, the AFL introduced a training squad selection draft, whereby clubs could leave one rookie position open following the rookie draft, to be filled after the NAB Cup grand final, and before the start of the 2011 premiership season.
Clubs were permitted to trial up to three players for that one rookie vacancy, with only Richmond and Hawthorn taking up the opportunity.
The Tigers have chosen Travis Casserly, Liam Corrie and Mitch Keddell to train with their squad throughout the pre-season.
Under the AFL’s rules, training squad draftees are eligible to train with their club at any time during the pre-season and may play NAB Cup and NAB Challenge matches.
Here’s a summary of Richmond’s three training squad draftees by the Tiger recruiting department . . .
TRAVIS CASSERLY
Date of Birth: 20/5/87
Height: 187cm
Weight: 82kg
Club: Swan Districts (WA)
Position: Rebounding defender
Travis will be well known to the Tiger faithful after spending three luckless years at the Club from 2006-08.
We have continued to monitor Travis’ progress over the past couple of years, and he has finally had some continuity with his football, playing two full seasons at WAFL club Swan Districts, including a key role in their thrilling one-point grand final victory over Claremont this year.
Travis has continued to develop as a player, while still displaying the exciting football traits he has always had - speed, run-and-carry, and penetrating kicking.
We feel Travis, at 23 years of age, is ready and deserving of another chance to prove he is ready for a return to AFL level.
LIAM CORRIE
Date of Birth: 15/6/92
Club: South Adelaide (SA)
Height: 178cm
Weight: 74kg
Position: Small forward
Liam has had an injury-interrupted couple of years, with some knee and hamstring issues, but we have continued to keep a close eye on him, due to his sheer talent
He was in the SA State under-18s squad in 2009 and played senior league football for South Adelaide in 2009 as a 16-year-old.
His 2010 season was restricted to a handful of appearances at colts level, but he is now returning to full fitness.
Liam is an outstanding tackler, who enjoys the physical aspects of the game and creates real nervousness in opposition backlines. He is a good left-foot kick and has the leap and athleticism to be dangerous overhead.
We look forward to Liam working on his fitness and putting forward his case for a spot on our rookie list over the next few months.
MITCH KEDDELL
Date of Birth: 7/8/88
Club: Port Melbourne
Height: 186cm
Weight: 90kg
Position: Midfielder
Mitch showed strong improvement in his football this year, following his move from Williamstown to Port Melbourne.
He played some outstanding VFL football, particularly in the middle of the year, and displayed elite foot skills.
Mitch also tested well at State screening this year, with a 2.97 20-metre time trial, as well as a strong agility performance.
While Mitch is 22 years old, we feel he could develop enormously in the full-time AFL environment, and we are pleased to give him the opportunity to push his case for a spot on our rookie list, over the coming months.

Geez he looks like he goes alright, if he played like that for us I wouldn't be complaining.
-
Wow, I know they were only highlights but gee he looks all right, has a fair hoof on him :o good luck to him...........
-
The possibility of Cass coming back to Richmond was mentioned to me in the middle of the year (I might have posted it as a rumour at the time IIRC). So I'm guessing he'd be the favoured one of the three. FJ was also a part-time recruiter under Miller when we first drafted Cass so he obviously likes Cass to keep a track of him. Playing in Swan Districts premiership side helps as well.
http://www.wafootball.com.au/wafl/2338-loyal-swan-casserly-rewarded-with-premiership
The question is now Cass is older and more developed can his body (hammies) now stand up to the rigours of full-time AFL footy and training which it couldn't when he was still in his late teens?!

Corrie in fight to become a Tiger
By Jai Bednall
Sunday Mail
12 Dec 2010, Page 73
SOUTH Adelaide junior Liam Corrie leaves for Richmond today to enter a three-man battle for the final spot on the club's rookie list.
One of two SA youngsters given the chance to fight for an AFL career in the first ever train-on squad draft last week, Corrie will spend this week with the Tigers before returning for Christmas and then the first three months of next year training at Punt Rd.
The opportunity comes after a season in which the highly-skilled left-footer was limited to just four under-18 games with the Panthers because of knee, back and hamstring injuries.
But the Tigers have admired Corrie from afar since he made his debut in the Panthers' league side as a 16-year-old and have given him the chance to prove he belongs at AFL level.
And while the $635 weekly pay he will receive is far less than what star Tigers Brett Deledio and Jack Riewoldt earn, it's almost double what he's paid as a first-year carpentry apprentice.
A product of Morphett Vale Football Club's junior program, Corrie will need to be at his best to beat mature-age rivals Travis Casserly and Mitch Keddell for a rookie contract.
Casserly, a 23-year-old rebounding defender from WAFL premier Swan Districts, has been given another chance after spending three years on Richmond's list from 2006-08.
Keddell is a 22-year-old midfielder from Port Melbourne.
Both have years of experience on 18-year-old Corrie, but that is not expected to count against him if he can get his fitness right.
"I would have liked to have done a little bit more running before heading over but I'll just go there and do my best,'' Corrie said.
"I didn't think I was going to get picked up this year because of all my injuries so it's great just to be given a chance.''
The Tigers described Corrie as an "outstanding tackler, who enjoys the physical aspects of the game and creates real nervousness in opposition backlines'' in a statement on their club website last week. "Liam has had an injury-interrupted couple of years, with some knee and hamstring issues, but we have continued to keep a close eye on him,'' the statement read.
"We look forward to Liam working on his fitness and putting forward his case for a spot on our rookie list.''
Under a new rule introduced this year, clubs are permitted to trial three players for one vacancy before making a final decision in March.
Train-on players are eligible to train with their club during the preseason and may play NAB Cup matches.
Hawthorn was the other club to take advantage of the new rule.

i wonder if all three will get a run in the all stars match?
-
Former Richmond listed player who will be turning 24 years old Travis Casserly from Swan Districts?
South Adelaide's Liam Corrie?
Or Port Melbourne's Mitchell Keddell?
:)
-
Hopefully Corrie
-
Far to early to say
Seeing they are not all in Melb until tomorrow and haven't started training
-
i wonder if all three will get a run in the all stars match?
i reckon...
My bookies Board would have
10/9 casserley
5/4 Keddle
2-1 Corrie
-
Casserly is vying for a rookie spot on Richmond's list with Victorian Mitch Keddell and South Australian Liam Corrie.
Craig Cameron was non-committal when asked if the Tigers would definitely take one of the three, but they have the room for one more rookie and seem likely to take one after talks with the recruiting department.

Lids on Keddell (Shepparton News)...
Ex-Shepparton Swans midfielder Mitch Keddell is hoping to join Deledio, Echuca’s Daniel Connors and Mansfield’s Andrew Browne as a Tiger.
Keddell, 22, is in contention for Richmond’s final rookie-list spot with ex-Tiger Travis Casserly and South Adelaide teenager Liam Corrie.
None of the three are playing in tonight’s contest, and Casserly recently received a two-year ban for testing positive to a performance-enhancing drug during last year’s WAFL grand final.
Casserly plans to appeal the decision.
‘‘‘Keds has done some good stuff and whether or not he gets his opportunity is up to the coaching staff,’’ Deledio said.
‘‘But he looks like a pretty good player, so if he gets on our list he’ll be a good asset for us and, if not, I’m sure he’ll dominate somewhere else.
‘‘I haven’t really spoken to him about it, but he was fighting against Trav Casserly, so that (the drug ban) sort of went his way.’’
-
looks like Kiddell will be the final rookie. why wouldn't Richmond play them tonight?
-
There's no reason why we may not rookie any of them.
-
There's no reason why we may not rookie any of them.
That's right we could rookie one of the 3 training with Hawthorn instead those who've been training with us
and seeing we have our selection first ..... :whistle

Keddel no sure thing
Shepparton News
March 9, 2011
Ex-Shepparton Swan Mitch Keddell is not guaranteed a spot on Richmond’s AFL rookie list despite seemingly being the last man standing.
Keddell, 22, started the summer vying with former Tiger Travis Casserly and South Adelaide teenager Liam Corrie for Richmond’s final rookie-list position.
The race was down to Keddell and Casserly before the latter received a two-year ban for testing positive to a performance-enhancing drug during last year’s WAFL grand final.
Casserly has appealed the decision, but Tigers officials are unsure when it will be heard.
AFL officials introduced a training-squad selection draft last year where clubs could leave one rookie place open following the AFL Rookie Draft.
Clubs can trial up to three players for the vacancy and have until before round one of the home-and-away season to make a decision.
Only Richmond and Hawthorn have taken the opportunity.
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said after Friday night’s AFL practice match at Deakin Reserve that Keddell was "looking a lot better" since Casserly’s drug ban, but stopped short of awarding him the position.
Richmond spokesperson Adrian Ceddia told The News this week that the Tigers may elect not to recruit any of the footballers.
"We don’t know how soon Travis’ appeal will be heard, so there has been no decision made yet on the final rookie spot," Ceddia said.
"The club has until next week to decide, and is under no obligation to even pick a player on the list, out of the three that are training."
Keddell, a 186 cm, 90 kg midfielder, didn’t play in Friday’s night’s game, but was part of Richmond’s losing NAB Cup pool matches against Carlton and Collingwood last month.
He was runner-up in the Swans’ 2009 best and fairest award to Morrison medallist Brian Durbridge despite playing half a season.
Keddell, who played for VFL club Port Melbourne last year, would become the third former GVFL player in two seasons to earn an AFL rookie-list spot if he is successful.
Ex-Euroa midfielder Relton Roberts and former Shepparton United best-and-fairest winner Michael Barlow played for the Tigers and Fremantle, respectively, last year
