AFL still on Hayne's radar
Jessica Halloran
The Sunday Telegraph
January 30, 2011
JARRYD Hayne's heart has been with Parramatta since he started playing for the club as a 12-year-old.
But the prospect of playing in the AFL, and joining Karmichael Hunt and Israel Folau, is pulling at him as Hayne claims the NRL keeps putting the players last.
"Let's not beat around the bush," Hayne said.
"Quite frankly, it's obvious that the NRL comes first, then the leagues club, then the players. That's the pecking order. It's becoming more and more clear."
Hayne is contracted to the Eels until 2013, but after that he said the prospect of a new challenge might take him away from the NRL.
During his contract negotiations with the Eels a year ago, Hayne's interest in AFL was seen as a bargaining tool.
However, the star fullback has opened up for the first time about his desire to play the rival code.
He said if he has achieved everything in rugby league within the next three seasons he will consider the switch.
First, he will watch carefully how Hunt and Folau perform in the AFL.
"For sure, 100 per cent [I will closely watch how Karmichael and Israel go]," Hayne said. "It's something I've obviously thought about, too.
"I'm not blind to the situation. I will have to see how they go, what happens with them, how I am feeling, what I want to do, it's all about how I feel at the time.
"If I feel satisfied with what I've done in league, I'll have to be the judge then. At the moment, my full focus is on Parramatta and my contract until 2013."

How old would this guy be by 2013? Is he a good player?

He's one of the best players in the NRL, won the Dally M (best player) in 2009. Like a younger Billy Slater but seems to dance around his opponents more rather than just breaking lines. Would be a massive loss to the NRL, however I'd say its more a threat at this stage to try and get the NRL to listen to the players.
He turns 23 in 2 weeks, so will be 25 in 2013.

Hayne is a gun as far as Rugby League. In the top 5 players at the very least. If he did switch it would be massive news up in Sydney especially as he plays for Parramatta which is in the heart of western Sydney. The Daily Telegraph would go into meltdown lol. Having said that it sounds far fetched as anything can happen in 3 years time. The NRL will have a new commission set-up copying the AFL model plus a new tv rights deal to boost the coffers. We'll also have a idea by then if the Folau and Hunt experiments are worthwhile or massive flops.

Hayne will go where the $$ are whether it be league, union or AFL ;D
Cannot see him making it as an AFL player just like I don't reckon poor Izzy Falou will make it either. But with the $$$$ Izzy's on does it really matter ;D

I think all the NRL players will struggle for quite a while with the 360 degree awareness required by AFL players. Jarryd is lightning fast and has an awesome sidestep but that's not enough to make it as a senior AFL player. You would almost have to put them in a category below the Irish players when it comes to development potential.
