Mire of the Tigers
Peter Hanlon
March 16, 2011

RICHMOND is resigned to there being no quick-fix to the ball movement issues so painfully evident in last Friday's demoralising practice match loss to Adelaide, and won't compromise its long-term goals in the pursuit of a better showing in the season-opener against Carlton tomorrow week.

Coach Damien Hardwick had forecast playing a last-ditch intra-club practice match in the wake of a loss to the Crows that he described as ''soul-destroying'', but the Tigers will instead continue the search for fluency and form on the training track with drills geared at improving stagnant ball movement.

Despite having lost the past two round-one clashes against the Blues by a cumulative 139 points, football manager Craig Cameron said the problems evident against Adelaide and the week before against Hawthorn could not be ironed out in the eight days before the 2011 season begins.

''Damien's whole plan has been 'no short-cuts', so we can't take the short-term view that round one is the be-all and end-all,'' Cameron said. ''We might have been guilty of that in the last couple of years, but it's a pretty long season.

''We don't want to put all our eggs into the one basket of round one. Obviously we'd like to start well and we don't want to start as badly as we have the last two years, but it's also important that we keep our focus on the fact that we've got 21 other matches to play as well.''

Cameron said there was more to be gained from the players in contention for round one working on specific drills as a group than giving several players a run in Friday night's VFL practice match for Coburg, which is also against Carlton. Only draftee Tom Derickx, who has had a bruised heel, is likely to play.

AFL rules would have prevented an intra-club even if the last-gasp measure was favoured.

''It'll just be some transition work and ball-movement work,'' Cameron said of this week's focus. ''It'll just be to put some urgency into the way we do that. And we're going to have to fix it on the track, but we can't fix it all in one week, obviously.''

In Richmond's defence against the Crows, it deliberately trialled interchanging only three players through the bench to mirror the home-and-away season's most controversial rule change, while Adelaide rotated six. The Tigers have also been in a heavy-load phase of pre-season training. Hardwick had also flagged a review of warm-up procedures after slow starts against the Crows and Hawks, but Cameron said no major changes were likely. ''We've had two poor starts and in the heat of the moment you start questioning a lot of things that you don't change, to be honest. I'm not concerned about the physical side of the warm-up at all.''

The club yesterday elevated Brad Miller to its senior list, with Cameron indicating he would play up forward while youngster Ben Griffiths recovered from a shoulder injury. ''We just want to make sure we've got a mature body in our forward half, we want to give Jack [Riewoldt] a bit of protection,'' Cameron said. ''With the ruck rule, Ty [Vickery] is going to have to do a bit of ruckwork as well.''

The mood of Tiger fans who ventured to Visy Park last Friday evening wasn't helped by an impressive showing across half-back from Richard Tambling, whose six seasons at Punt Road were increasingly dogged by the burden of having been taken at pick four in the 2004 draft ahead of Lance Franklin.

Tambling's fresh start was delayed by a knee injury, and he was left in no doubt where he stood last month when coach Neil Craig said he was not among the Crows' best 22. But Friday's effort and his performance against Carlton have brought him into contention to play against Hawthorn in round one.

''He's just fitted in nicely at the moment across half-back,'' Craig said. ''He's calm within himself, he's not trying to prove anyone wrong or do anything special. The boring statement - he knows what he needs to do, he's playing his role out there and just fitting in, and that's all he needs to do for us.''

Once over his knee issues, Craig said the focus had been on training Tambling hard - ''very hard, and he needs to do some more training''. Having that grounding, the coach believes, will bring the consistency he has been criticised for lacking in the past.

In his favour is the coach's insistence that the past is just that. ''He just needs to re-adjust where he sits from an expectation point of view, because I think he's been under huge expectation - not all because of his fault, he can't help being picked at pick four. We haven't spent a lot of time on that. I'm not interested where he's picked in the draft. Hopefully he'll become a regular player for us.''

Also upgraded as nominated rookies before yesterday's deadline for clubs with 38 players on their lists, not including veterans, were Ed Curnow at Carlton, Nick Lower (Fremantle), Riley Milne (Hawthorn) and Michael Newton (Melbourne).

That's an interesting fact.  Would certainly help explain why they ran all over us in the last quarter after we had beaten them in the previous 2.

Tigers expecting to be toothless again
By Nick Bowen

PERHAPS Richmond is just trying to soften the blow.

Perhaps it wants to acknowledge the suffering inflicted on its supporters at its past two round one games.

Perhaps it feels compelled to warn those fans that, if they're brave enough to head out to the MCG next Thursday night, there's likely to be more of the same.

How else do you explain the comments of Richmond football manager Craig Cameron in The Age on Wednesday?

Of the Tigers' round one clash with Carlton, Cameron said: "We can't take the short-term view that round one is the be-all and end-all."

He also added: "We don't want to put all our eggs into the one basket of round one."

Perhaps Cameron is just being realistic. Coach Damien Hardwick described the Tigers' performance in their practice match against Adelaide last Friday as "soul destroying". In the aftermath, he has prescribed his side heavy doses of ball-movement drills designed to add fluency to its play.

Some might add a spoonful of sugar to help their supporters swallow such a harsh dose of reality.

Cameron only said the Tigers' problems couldn't be fixed in a week.

It's perhaps best then that Cameron leaves it to the marketing types at Richmond and AFL House to sell next Thursday's game as a must-see contest.

thats 100%  right.

Cameron should just go back to his beloved Melbourne.

I guarantee we would get more members if we beat carlton in Rd 1, than any other game throughout the year

Dont kid yourself these are the games that make clubs, beating the arch enemy in front of 80k, 40k of which belong in Lalor.
