Title: Positives from last night's game?

Losing to Carlton sucks I know but what positives did you get out of last night's game?

did enough to keep the fixture next year  :thumbsup

Cotchin was superb.
Batchelor has a ripper left shoe on him. Looked at home in front of 60k at AFL level.
Conca looked slick as, took the game on. Don't think made a mistake all night? Backed back into oncoming Carlton forwards leading. Gem
Jack, no hint of Coleman medal blues.
Jackson gave 110%
White smashed Yarran

Conca looks like a jet.

Cotchin was playing vs Judd in 3q and killing it

Conca will be a gun.
Batchelor has composure
Cotchin if he plays 22 games will be superb. Leadership material.
Grigg will be a good second tier player.
Astbury will develop nicely.
Rance I believe has improved.
Newman is relishing in his role as leader.
Morton looks to have found a niche in midefield
Jack will be a star
The good guys from tonight.

Deledio Martin can only improve on tonights efforts.

We should have lost by more and we didn't we are a young side and we fought back from four goals down at half time to put ourselves in a winning position. poo happens.

Oh and if all of the above turn out to be furphys then this is a bona fide positive we exposed the filth as being an average side and that Ratten is gone at the end of the year as they will be lucky to win a final and they are definentely not a top 4 side with an list that is starting to age. No soup for you. :lol :rollin :lol

Cotchin was superb.
Don't get me wrong I get why people love Cotchin but boy do our supporters over rate him on what he has delivered so far
He was AWOL for massive parts of the game tonight, his 3rd quarter was outstanding but he had 1 disposal in the 1st quarter and his disposal efficiency for the whole match was pretty average

Very hard to string 4 match winning qtrs together, Judd went missing in the 3rd.

Still have to realise he's not even 21 yet.

You are right we probably do overate him though.

conca & Batchelor - just fantastic to see that composure.
Helbig goes hard - very very raw and needs time at coburg but looks an upgrade on hislop already lol
Vickery did some nice things and impacted the game at times
Rance - best most assured game Ive seen from him - massive improvement from last season, good at the contest and assured in decision making/execution
Cotchin - the way he worked himself into the game after a horror start was encouraging - funnily enough really started to motor when he rotated onto Judd for a 10 minute spell.
Jack - what more can you say
Jackson - Hard at it and ran himself ragged.
Newman - considering his interrupted preseason he was very impressive even if betts did get away from him at times.

from a team perspective when the players stop thinking about directions and just play on instinct like they did in the 3rd we flow so much better. Its so obvious they are trying hard to implement the game plan which makes them tentative and slow on the uptake. peeed off at losing after having them on the ropes but we'll take something out of this for sure.

Also we are not very well conditioned - so many players dont look in top physical condition for various reasons ie cotchin, martin, newman, houli, Jackson, deledio. I know several

I noticed this alot.

It is Round 1 though and match fitness will come.

This style of Pre Season had to happen though. The increase in core and upper body size is the biggest improvement Ive seen in an RFC group for 10 years I reckon. Astbury, Rance, Vickery are enourmous compared to what they were this time last year.

We had to get our bodies bigger to compete and obviously that takes time away from aerobic fitness aswell as the dilemma of adjusting the payers bodies carrying an extra 5kgs around 4 qtrs of football. Plus only 3 interchange.

I'd rather see us compete for Hardwick for 3 qtrs going hard at it with our bigger bodies then running out 4 qtrs and getting smacked around like rag dolls playing a nancy run and carry Terry Wallace style.

I wonder if we are planning on hitting peak fitness in Round 5 after we are done playing Hawks, Saints & Pies.

Positives- when we tackled we were very good eg White's tackle on Judd and when Scotland was pinged for holding the ball. White did a great job on Yarran. Vickery played well. Conca did some good things. Batchelor started well but faded out abit towards the end. Helbig really impressed me. Got better as the game went on. Nahas played a good game. Jack was brilliant. He is a very team oriented player. Morton did some good things. Cotchin played a lot better in second half and Foley got through the game uninjured. Houli played okay.

Disappointments- Edwards. His disposal was poor. Apart from Newman and Batchelor our defence was poor. Rance's disposal and decision making continues to be a real problem. He just doesn't hit the mark and thus places that other player under enormous pressure. Astbury had a quiet game. McGuane I suppose was okay but we need Moore back there. I think Thursfield should be preferred over Rance. Believe Edwards should be dropped and bring in Tuck. Jury still out on Grigg. Got alot of the ball but didn't do much with it.

Conca - silky

Batchelor - composure

Rance - close to the best game I've seen him play

Funny how in the 3rd when our good plays started to get the ball we gat back in the game (eg Cotchin, Newman, Deledio)

Jack is a gem

Vickery - needs to do alot more but some good signs

Hellbig - got better as the game went on, really needs to improve defensively (read more 2nd efforts) but some really good signs

Cotch had a very slow start as you said, 1 disposal in the 1st, but from there he was very good. He did make a few errors in the second with his kicking (didn't hit the target but at least the ball rolled out of play and not to the opposition to rebound) his second half was excellent, was in everything, fighting to get the ball forward.

Good summary, he still wasn't superb. It was a good recovery after a slow start, that's all.

It was nice to see poor old Ratts on the bench in the third quarter with his head hung in utter dismay.

You could tell by that footage that he is under enormous pressure this season.  :lol

Some of the best player for mine were also some of the most tradionally maligned - Nahas, McGuane and Jackson.

Nahas was excellent all game. I would say he was our best player after Jack on the night. His run and carry through traffic and down the wing were fantastic as was his chases and tackling. I also thought he was one of the few players that never stopped or tired as the game progressed.

McGuane was our rock in defence and spoiled entry after entry. No forward even looked like getting a mark when he was near. Solid.

Jackson was our only midfielder of worth in the early stages of the game and kicked a handy goal. Was very impressed.

I found it hard to find a player that didn't play well during the night. I can name some terrible individual mistakes but there was no real negative standout for mine.

What concerns me is his decision making and his attempts at times to be a little "too cute"

To be blunt (some will call it being harsh) he is still making some shocking decisions that result in shocking & costly turnovers. People take aim at others (rightly) but looking at the decision making part of his game there's still a lot of me doing this  :banghead :banghead  when it comes to Dan's turnovers

Based on that for mine he was OK & I didn't have him in my best 5-6 though - simple because the butchering of the ball. It is far too costly IMHO

Ditto Nahas - was pleased with his game up until his selfish brain explosion in the 3rd. Though, I noticed Dimma mentioned in his pressie about Nahas "taking on the game" and making mistake but then call it "having a crack". All well and good I reckon but at some point you have to say "no Robby, do the team things"

Besides that mistake he made in the third where he tried to side step and spin and be a hero where he should have just kicked the ball to lids in space I thought he was excellent. When he ran down the wing and past his opponent he covered half the ground and set up a goal as a result so these two cancel each other out for mine. I thought he played one of the best games I have seen him play in well over a year.

I can't recall one poor desposal by Jackson in the game myself but the paper states he had 7 so I must have missed a fair few. He looked like he was our only ball winner at many stages during the game and while he'll never be in our elite future midfield  :pray he gave us strength and experience we were lacking when we were at our lowest point in the game. I thought he played a good game, and like Nahas it was the best I've seen him play for some time.

Just watched the game on TV after going last night. Think alot of people on here have been way to harsh on Lids. In fact NFI!!!!
The third quarter was probably the best quarter i have seen us play for years.
Nahas was fantastic! So was Cotch. A really good first up effort from almost all.
Really liked Helbig's game although TV did him no justice.
Conca looked liked he had been playing at this level for years.
Rance fought well and has improved out of site.
One thing i have noticed on here is some people just seem to look for the negatives of our players, lets face it people, the players are going to make mistakes, they and are going to get caught "trying to do to much" but if we don't have these guys breaking the lines and taking them on, then we will never improve!

I can only see one change for next week and that's King in and maybe Edwards out.

I think I remember reading somewhere a couple of weeks back that Hardwick had told him to do that this year?  I might be wrong but if it's true then you can't condemn Nahas for playing to instructions.

I agree with you BT but is King out for 1 week or 2?  I would want to drop Edwards as well, just to try and get him focused like he was last year.  His form so far in the pre-season and Thursday night has been poor.

Jumping Jack showed he wont just be a flash in the pan. ;D
Conca - Looks like we might have got a gem here.
Nahas must show what he did every week and he may be a chance to stay.
Daniel Jackson - Loved his hardness and attack on the footy (Rubbish free to Judd when Jacko went to him from the bench by the way) nuff said.
Think Rance showed a bit, just gotta improve his awareness but don't think he should be hung drawn and qtrd for 1 incident.
Vickerys getting better.
Cotch is class and is gunna step up every week.
Tell you we really had Carlton on the ropes half way through the last and it was only their experience and our lack of it that got them over the top, reckon we can leap them next year.

I think you're a bit harsh on Nahas there WP. He has been given a license to take the game on and sometimes iit will not work or there may be other options that get ignored. It's a risky ploy but the benefits are worth it. It will never give a 100% success rate

Like someone has already said would rather see the team take it on rather than the old TW style of hold on to it and do circle work. Sometimes you just cant win.
