THE wait is nearly over for Adam Potter.
His debut as coach of the Coburg Tigers in the Victorian Football League will come this Saturday at Trevor Barker Oval, when the Tigers hit the road against Sandringham.
The Round 1 match will be televised on the ABC, with Potter’s first quarter-time address likely to be aired live across the state.
Saturday’s match is about more than just four points for the combatants.
The Tigers and the Zebras both endured disappointing 2010 seasons and will be desperate to climb the ladder.
In a boost to Coburg, star Sandy recruit and former Essendon utility Marcus Marigliani will miss Round 1 after injuring his knee in a practice match last week.
Potter says his Tigers could hardly be in better shape.
Developing ruckman Brendan Fewster is sidelined with osteitis pubis but he is alone in the City Oval medical room.
Coburg hosted Werribee, another side hell-bent on improvement, in the final practice match on Saturday (after deadline) with former Western Bulldogs pacy midfielder Jamason Daniels impressing over summer.
“At the moment he’s tracking really well for Round 1 and Sammy Power, our midfield coach, is really happy with him,” Potter said last week.
The rookie coach said there was still AFL hope for Daniels, who could follow in the footsteps of Carlton’s Ed Curnow and Fremantle’s Peter Faulks.
Potter said he was unsure how much use he would get out of rookie-listed Brad Miller, who was promoted to Richmond’s senior list last week.
Ruckman Tom Derickx is likely to return for Coburg this week from a bruised heel and Potter praised his side’s fitness levels.
“We’ve been on an intense fitness program and have really ramped up work on our decision-making, but the boys are fully aware there’s still along way to go,” he said.

Still no Derickx so he must still be injured/underdone. I would've thought also that Contin would be in the starting 18 rather than on the bench ???. Hopefully Postie has a strong game and push for senior selection to help our forward structure.
-
Dmac and westy in the 2s :banghead
our own reserves side is a priority

It's shyte macdonald is playing in the thirds...

I agree Al. I hope the kids are in the Coburg firsts next week.
-
Will definitely pay close attention to Gourdis, Thursfield and Grimes.
-
Will definitely pay close attention to Gourdis, Thursfield and Grimes.
We're losing tall defenders like nine-pins aren't we and Buddy awaits one of the above three :-\
-
I personally think we should bring in two of our remaining three. Need to play one of them in the hole.
-
Will definitely pay close attention to Gourdis, Thursfield and Grimes.
given we play hawthorn next week, i would say gourdis would probably be a better choice to replace mcguane as i really dont' see thursfield being able to stand up to buddy or roughy physically. gourdis at least has more of a shot. hope he has a blinding game today.
-
Coburg has the breeze.
Dumb free by Thursty. First goal to Sandy.
-
Coburg defenders ball watching and Sandy get another.
Cob 0

Power goes long inside 50. Nason gets hit high 25m out. Goal :gotigers
Cob 6

Coburg defence under pressure and the kick out misses Hicks and Sandy set up another goal from the turnover.
But we get the quick centre clearance and Nason gets his second :gotigers
Sandy two man down already due to injuries.

Tanner gets a quick kick forward and Miller marks on the lead. Goals from 40m out :gotigers

Big Browne puts his head over the ball and earns the free. Long ball in ends up on the ground and Tucky kicks a goal :gotigers
Cob 30

Andrew Browne long kick into the forward line
Off Miller's hands who was held trying to get it on the 2nd grab
It spills to Tuck who kicks the goal from the goal square

Coburg have kicked the last 4 goals straight and 5 of the last 6

Cob 42
San 32
High scoring game.
-
Quarter time
Coburg 7.0-42
Sandy 5.2-32
Goals: Nason 2, Carnell 2, Miller, Post, Tuck
RFC player stats
Browne 3k 5h
Tuck 4k 2h
Contin 4k
Nason 3k, 2 goals
Rayson and Power have the most possies for Coburg.
-
Post look ok.
browne and contin goodish.
-
Very even stats except for centre clearances which favour Coburg 10-2.
Very open game - end to end stuff. Coburg just went old school long with the 3-4 goal breeze inside 50.
Browne for mine is the only RFC player that is standing out against Saint Rhys Stanley. I guess Nason has done his job kicking 2 goals as a HFF.
Potter was disappointed with our bombing away. Wants us to be more composed.
-
Look bit slow and short.
Troy Taylor needs to be replaced.
-
All Sandy early on this qtr. Two points and then a long goal on the breeze to Sandy.
Cob 42
San 40
-
Juat watching this game on TV and it's clear to see that a few players are no good.
Hicks (soft)
Gourdis (athletic but kicking is attrocious)
-
Falling down badly across HF. We are trying to run it inside 50 and twice got pinged for holding the ball.
Cob 42
San 41
-
Coburg making a lot of dumb basic mistakes.
Fumbling handballs that are behind a teamate, Power kicks OOTF and then Post drops a straightforward mark at this level in defence - ball goes behind for a Sandy goal.
Cob 42
San 47
-
Gourdis caught holding the ball. Another Sandy goal. One way traffic in this quarter. We don't look like scoring.
Cob 42
San 53
-
Quick centre clearance and another goal to Sandy. Coburg getting murdered this qtr.
Cob 42
San 59
-
Miller does well making a contest and Carnell with sheer determination roves a bouncing goal :gotigers
Cob 48
San 59
-
After not looking like scoring that's two in a minute. Sandy all up in the pack but no one down and Lawton bounces through another goal :gotigers
Cob 54
San 59
-
Shocking mistake by Postie. After a good mark he tries to beat the man on the mark and turns it over. Goal to Sandy.
Cob 54
San 65
-
Gee there are a few RFC listed boys such as Post, Gourdis, Nason etc.. that really need to stand up in these games.
-
Jayden Post & Pat Contin can be added to my earlier list.
Poor decision makers, Post is an absolute spud with the ball
-
Postie is playing as though he is 5 secs behind the play.
Kahletfelt find Webberley on the fat side who hits Miller on the lead. Point.
Cob 55
San 65
-
4 coburg forward all go up ::). Thenb Rhett Jordan forgets the goals are 15m away and handballs sttraight to a Sandy player in the goal square. Thje a Coburg player passes it straighjt a Sandy defender :scream.
Half-time
Coburg 7.0 9.2-56
Sandy 5.2 10.5-65
Goals: Carnell 3, Nason 2, Tuck, Miller, Post, Lawton
-
God, have to go to a meeting.....bloody work.. :lol, lets hope I come back to a good result.
-
Grimes and thursty
did some good things.
Tuck and browne winning ball in middle but not using ky well.
-
Grimes was pretty good in that second qtr of our defenders.
We kicked the first two points of the 3rd qtr but Sandy too easily run it down for a goal.
Cob 58
San 71
-
Nice work by Grimes in defensive 50 finds Webbs across the other side of the ground. He hit Nason on the wing who hits Kahletfelt insdie 50. OOTF! :P
-
Bad kick and then bounce for a Sandy player allows Dea to nicely get it to Webbs who finds Miller 50m out. Goal :gotigers
Cob 64
San 71
-
More stupid play by Coburg going inside 50 where a Coburg player tries to take the man on the mark on and then Hicks loses his footing gifts Sandy possession and they run it up for a Point to them.
Cob 64
San 72
-
Power intercepts a poor Sandy kick. Quick kick inside 50 ends up with Tucky who gives it to Nason who snaps a high goal. :gotigers
Cob 70
San 72
-
Kahlefelt kicks a point from the boundary.
And then Lawton bring it down and a quick kick is also a point.

RFC stats:
Webberley 14k 2h

-
Nason hyper extended his elbow. Looks OK tho.
-
Inside 50s: 26 - 35
Centre clearances: 16 - 6
Possies: 156 - 141
Potter says we are going one-on-one in the last. Nason and Tuck to move up to the square. Post and Miller up forward. Sandy are reading Browne's taps. Need to compete in our forward half. Take risks and make smart decisions between the arcs linking up with each other. Effort has been good; it's been poor decision making with ball in hand that has caused our many turnovers. We've got plenty of legs left.
Nason having his elbow strapped on the bench.
-
Good contest by Miller at CHF and then chips to Contin 35m out. Goal :gotigers
Cob 79
San 79
-
Sorry it was Hicks with the chip after Miller brought it down.
Point to Coburg. Back in front.
Macqualter gifts it to Postie. Ends up with Contin 30m out. Goal :gotigers

Cob 99

-
Final Score
Coburg 7.0 9.2 11.7 16.9-105
Sandy 5.2 10.5 12.7 16.12-108
Goals: Carnell 4, Nason 3, Miller 3, Tuck 2, Contin 2, Post, Lawton
Miller punching it out into space with 10 secs to go at that final bounce in Sandy's forward line was very dumb play. If we held it in one more time Coburg would've held on.
-
I'd still like to know how a free to Sandy between the goal and point post is a shot at goal directly in front ???. If the Sandy player had to take the normal angle he would've been on an acute angle and wouldn't have been able to play on after the siren.
Mind you Coburg were very dumb at stoppages when 10 points up. We left Sandy's goal side at the stoppages open :scream. What a choke! :banghead
-
RFC players:
Thursty - ordinary first qtr for mine but did his usual solid nullifying role for the rest of the game.
Miller - contested well across HF bringing the ball down which created opportunties for our smalls at ground level. Brainfade in defence with 10 secs to go.
Tucky - typical Tucky game. In hard in close and found plenty of the ball. Still bombs his kicks which is why he is out of the senior side.
Gourdis - Solid defensively but his kicking as we know lets him down.
Browne - best RFC player. Dominant big man on the ground.
Postie - had a bit of shocker for mine as his brain was 5 secs behind his body for most of the day. A fair few basic brainfades today. That speckie in the last was a rare time he did something right.
Dea - did some nice things in the second half but didn't notice him a lot.
Hicks - too small and kept falling over.
Webberley - good game after half-time. Got plenty of the ball. Still needs to work on his short passing.
Nason - was pretty good until he hurt his elbow. Came back on but I didn't notice him much in the last.
Grimes - Our best defender for mine in terms of clean spoiling and disposal. Appeared to do the right thing most of the time.
Contin - Didn't notice him that much before half-time but got more into the game as it went on and was probably our most influential in the last quarter.
-

It's was payed a 50m free kick lol
soft effort by coburg. Sandy had 2 less players on the bench.

From the VFL site:
VFL seniors:
Bests: Webberley, Grimes, Tanner, Tuck, Nason, Carnell
VFL ressies:
Coburg 15.15-105
Sandy 12.8-80
-
Gee, can we not take a trick or what...oh well, never mind.
-
the standout RFC players for mine were webberley and nason. Grimes very solid and clean down back. special mention for Dea who i believe has improved out of sight. really composed with his decision making and could really see his basketball instincts come to the fore when he has the ball in close.
-
Gee, can we not take a trick or what...oh well, never mind.
Our (Coburg's) own fault today. Too many brainfades all day. Once we got 10 points up late in the last quarter we should have closed the game down and maintained possession when we had the ball.

If I didn't know better I'd swear that timekeeper was hanging on until Sandy got their noses in front. Not a hugely high-scoring final quarter, yet somehow inexplicably it ticked over the 32 minute mark, then the air-horn blows just as they kick the winner :(
-

I remember a U19 GF where the opposition timekeeper deliberately blew the siren two minutes early when he saw a Richmond player running into goal that would've put us in front and won us the U19 flag. IIRC the guy was banned for life but the result wasn't altered (so we lost).
All the players were dead tired today in the last quarter and the game slowed down significantly so there were heaps of stoppages (ball-ups and throw-ins) that would've added time-on. When you're 10 points up with about minute or so left you have to choke to lose from there. Coburg lost close games like that last year as well. From memory Box Hill kicked the winning goal after the siren in the Anzac Day clash last year. Just plain not good enough.

I think it's the opposite. We beat Box Hill after the siren (Polo kicked the goal)
-
Yeah, fair enough MT. It was just the way they played it up on the telecast, putting the camera on the timekeepers box, and he just sat there impassively, like he had no intention of blowing the damned thing til they hit the front. And sure enough, the split-second the winning kick came, bluurrtt. I'd been willing the damned siren to go for two minutes, then that. It was so damn frustrating.
-
facts are coburb were pathetic
no excuses they should have won easy
nason seemed to be the only one really having a dip
-
Tuck is a warrior too

Tuck is a warrior too
never said he wasnt a warrior, but he is and 80's 90's player
games too fast for him and he plays old fashioned footy, wins the ball and kicks it in hope

Coburg unlucky in season opener
richmondfc.com.au
Sun 03 Apr, 2011
Richmond’s VFL affiliate, Coburg, has suffered a heart-breaking three-point loss to Sandringham in the opening round of the season.
A goal after the siren from Will Johnson handed the Zebras the win after a Shane Tuck goal put the Tigers two goals ahead with less than two minutes to play.
Coburg led at quarter time after a strong start, and kept in touch with Sandringham to three quarter time, when the trailed by just six points.
Two goals to Richmond rookie Pat Contin early in the last quarter helped Coburg take the lead, which they maintained until the last kick of the day.
Jeromey Webberley, Shane Tuck and Ben Nason were the most prolific ball winners for the Tigers, while Andrew Browne was impressive in the ruck and Dylan Grimes rebounded well from half back.
Coburg listed midfielder Nick Carnell kicked four goals for the match, with Brad Miller and Ben Nason booting three each.
The Tigers have the bye next weekend, before taking on Northern Bullants on Sunday April 17.
Final scores - Round 1
Coburg Tigers 7.0, 9.2, 11.7, 16.9 (105)
Sandringham 5.2, 10.5, 12.7, 16.12 (108)
Goal Kickers: N. Carnell 4, B. Miller 3, B. Nason 3, P. Contin 2, S. Tuck 2, J. Post , J. Lawton
Best Players: J. Webberley, D. Grimes, M. Tanner, S. Tuck, B. Nason, N. Carnell

I only watched parts of the last qtr when I got home
But the last 3 minutes were pathetic
With 3 minutes to go and leading by 2 goals you don't lose
Very little defensive pressure by the Coburg mids or defenders in that last 3 minutes :banghead
And a very stupid free kick to hand the game to Sandy IMHO

VFL Coburg Report
richmondfc.com.au
By Tony Greenberg
3:06 PM Tue 05 Apr, 2011
Development coach, David Newett, provides a summary of how the Richmond-listed players performed for Coburg in last weekend’s opening round of the 2011 VFL season . . .
Will Thursfield (5 kicks, 6 handballs, 6 marks)
Was solid in defence, with nine spoils and 10 team defensive involvements. Provided good support to a young backline and used the ball well offensively.
Brad Miller (7 kicks, 1 handball, 4 marks)
Was able to provide the team with a strong target up forward, despite the opposition constantly dropping numbers back. Led well and forced a contest when outnumbered, and when the ball was kicked in quickly. Overall, three goals was a good return from him.
Shane Tuck (11 kicks, 12 handballs, 4 marks)
Was very good at stoppages with his strong bodywork. Impressive work-rate throughout (had 10 tackles), showed good leadership in the tight last quarter, and certainly had an impact on the game.
Ben Nason (10 kicks, 7 handballs, 4 marks)
Started impressively, kicking two goals in the first quarter. Finished the game with a total of 17 possessions and used the ball efficiently.
David Gourdis (12 kicks, 4 handballs, 6 marks)
Played deep in defence and did a solid job in denying the opposition for the majority of the match. Got involved in offensive chains and provided run out of the backline.
Andrew Browne (6 kicks, 11 handballs, 5 marks)
Had an interesting battle in the ruck and around the ground with promising St Kilda-listed big man Rhys Stanley. Had 35 hit-outs and six clearances, to be one of the team’s best on the day.
Jayden Post (8 kicks, 5 handballs, 5 marks)
Was used forward and in the ruck throughout the game. Had an impact in the last quarter, taking a strong mark and setting up a couple of goals.
Matt Dea (9 kicks, 13 handballs, 6 marks)
Played a more attacking role in defence. Accumulated 22 possessions, with seven handball receives, and was involved in several offensive chains. Looked strong around contests.
Robbie Hicks (10 kicks, 4 handballs, 2 marks)
Worked hard up forward, without having a major impact. Had an interrupted pre-season and will benefit from having that game under his belt.
Jeromey Webberley (17 kicks, 5 handballs, 7 marks)
Very good performance. Used the many possessions he gathered to the team’s advantage. Worked hard right throughout the game, running and linking up. One of the team’s best on the day.
Dylan Grimes (7 kicks, 4 handballs, 3 marks)
Had another strong defensive game. Also provided good spread and attack from the backline.
Pat Contin (12 kicks, 6 handballs, 9 marks)
Started the game slowly, but had a significant impact in the final term, kicking two goals and setting up some others.
Dean MacDonald
Played in the reserves and showed some impressive traits, including a top goal in the first quarter. Drifted in and out of the game.
Nick Westhoff
Also played in the reserves, where he presented well as a key forward. Was involved in several of the team’s scoring chains.
Match details (VFL seniors)

That player-by-player definitely errs on the positive side. Very kind to a few guys who had a pretty ordinary game.
