Richmond star Brett Deledio says David Astbury can take job on Hawthorn's Lance Franklin

RICHMOND star Brett Deledio has backed young defender David Astbury to lead the charge on Hawk guns Buddy Franklin and Jarryd Roughead on Saturday night.
The Tigers will be light on for key backmen after Luke McGuane today joined Alex Rance on the sidelines courtesy of the match review panel.
Deledio said Astbury was the obvious choice to take a key job, while Will Thursfield, Dylan Grimes and Dave Gourdis were all possible inclusions.
“He’s one of our only big tall backs down there after losing the other two, so I’d imagine he’d take Roughead or Franklin,’’ Deledio said after training at Punt Rd.
Twenty-year-old Astbury, who has played 17 games, is 1cm shorter and 10kg lighter than Franklin.
“We’ll back him in," Deledio said.
“Disappointing, isn’t it? Alex Rance is playing some good footy and so is Luke McGuane.
"I guess it just gives an opportunity to Will Thursfield, Dylan Grimes, Dave Gourdis to step up and make the most of an opportunity. Both Will and Dylan have shown they can play on the key forwards.’’
Deledio said Jack Riewoldt got through training comfortably after his well-documented concussion last week.
“Jack, I don’t think he’s changed much, he’s always full of beans," Deledio said.
“Good to see him back out there training loud and enjoying it, I guess.
“I was actually on the bench (when Riewoldt was concussed) and I was just concentrating fully on the game, I didn’t think twice about it.’’

Lets hope the first option is given to Will Thursfield.
-
This year is still about learning and I think Astbury may be quite capable. Who takes Roughhead?
-
A great test for the cub and a great way to fast track our players learning on the best.
-
I don't think he's got the athletic ability to go with him (not many can go with buddy). Wouldn't mind seeing Thursfield get a crack on him. How was Gourdis for the Burgers?
When the stuff is our very own Red back?
-
Big call this one, give Thursfield a go first, we may even have to double team him or cut the supply off to him from further up the ground. The best option would be to force him up the ground away from the goals, rather than have the ball coming in to a one on one, he will win every time.
-
i thought grimes and thursfield were some of the few decent coburg players.

lol.......Did you see his game for Coburg? If he comes into the side I will spew!
-
Tuck on buddy... I just want him back in the team :lol
reckon he is a champ
-
Me thinks Buddy would be lickin his lips.
-
Brad Miller ;D

Me thinks Buddy would be lickin his lips.
That's b/c Clarko had the team over at his house for KFC.

That would explain Buddy's pot belly the last year or two :burgereater
-
Surely Ray Hall and Scotty Turner will be instant call ups..
-
Give Thursfield first crack at Buddy. Astbury on Roughhead. White on Burgoyne. Gourdis or Grimes on Hale?
-
Give the kids a shot.
Astbury to Roughead. Grimes to Franklin.
If it falls over then what have we lost? They have gained valuable experience.

Agree, what the hell, and to help the lads out...keep the freaking ball away from Jerry & Lewis!!!!
-
Astbury at present is a third tall.
He isn't a great defender of the footy but he rebounds ok. To even think he should get a crack at Buddy is laughable!!! The perfect match up is Dave Gourdis. He is super quick, tall, agile, a good spoiler and most importantly has an opportunity to earn the right to be part of this side that is on the way up. I don't care how he has been going at Coburg, he should be brought into the side and told, you have first crack at Buddy, do well and you'll go a long way in being a part of this side this year.
Could not write a better script for a kid that has been on our list for a while that just needs "that game" to feel like he belongs at the level. I think he does....

I like the logic but just too nervous that Gourdis isn't good enough in the footy nous department.
-
Don't need a rebounding player on Buddy. We need some who can take him out of the game. Thursfield is my first choice but if that fails believe there is merit in bringing in Gourdis to the side as a back up and to play on Hale if he goes up forward. Astbury is having a quiet start to year. Dont't want his confidence to be shattered if Buddy has a blinder. Astbury would be better on roughhead. He would be able to expose Roughhead

Will be a "'career defining "' night on saturday for Will Thursfield

Will be a "'career defining "' night on saturday for Will Thursfield
It sure will!! He won't be worth trading at the end of the year if he doesn't perform. I really thought Will was going to come along last year and even more so this year, lets hope he can really lift and cement a spot in our backline.
-
Grimes is in!
-
surely we could've brought in Thursfield also. Edwards has done nothing the last month.
Grimes and Astburt vrs Roughead and Franklin
we are screwed.
-
It's a long term decision, but i think you are right in terms of this week

Buddy under an injury cloud
rolled ankle.
Just on 10 news. :pray

channel 10 just blowing up the story. Didnt they even admit the club said he'll be trainning tomorrow and playing.
-
yep i dont believe it for a second.
He will play.
-
Agree with Daniel. Franklin and Roughhead are going to have a field day if Hawthorn mids fire. Who the hell is going to go on Hale. Would rather put Newman on Franklin than Astbury. Newman is quick, brave and has good skills. Would relieve pressure on other defenders.
-
i reckon play deledio on franklin
has the pace and ability to beat anyone

good idea. another thing that will do is force Franklin up the ground, which will relieve some of the pressure on our short defence.

I don't agree at all. I would never take my best midfielder and play him on a forward giant like Franklin. Put Deledio on the ball. IMO We need all our best play makers in the midfield to get first use out of middle. If the ball is in our forward 50 then the our boy Jack can give them headaches & the twin towers won't be a problem.

he is our best defender too, and u have to think outside the square, he can win the game for us by beating and exposing buddy
btw he has played one game in the midfeild now in 3 seasons

Newman is the man for the job. He is a very good defender. He is much better one on one.

Newman is 13cm shorter and 20kg lighter.
You are kidding, right?
:lol
-
maybe he can carry a milk crate out on the ground with him?
-
What the stuff is going on... suggestions have been lids, newman and CONNORS :help :gobdrop

If you play deledio vs Franklin with astbury chb grimes fb back to help him out...
Deledio could get 40 influential possessions
Buddy defensive side of thr game not his strong point v

exactly
and the dawks will never expect it

Newman is Richmond's best defender.Plus he is taller than Brett. He is a good spoiler. Brett would be better playing on Hodge in the middle. Use Brett as an asset.
-
You're kidding, right? Newman (183cm) is about 5cm shorter than Deledio (188cm) officially according to their listed heights on the RFC website.
-
what
Deledio is 6'3 and built like a brick poohouse. Newman would be under 184

"Just got news from a friend connected to the coaching staff that you plan to play brett on Buddy.
The idea being that he can work him over with his running and make buddy conscious of him going the other way. It also gives some of your younger players a chop out. He will be able to match him on the ground and he will beat any of the other options in the air anyway."

Sorry was wrong about Newman's height. Still does not change the fact he is our best defender. Franklin is a bloody good player. We need to keep him in check
