Benny Gale will be on Daniel Hartford's show sometime after midday.
-
I missed the middle part as I had to answer a phone call but here's what I caught of the interview. I'm guessing the bit I missed was about free agency and the need for the Fighting Tiger Fund.
-------------------------------------
* Playing 4 teams in the top half. In winning positions in two of them and disappointing we only got 2 points against St Kilda but two points nevertheless. Hawthorn was disappointing but there were still positives - we moved the ball well through their zone, our pressure inside 50 was good. In the wet their bigger mature bodies really showed.
* Ball movement this year has been good but we want to see improvement in defence compared to last year. Didn't progress as much as we should've defensively in 2010. Personnel issues has hurt us but it gives Astbury and Grimes chances for further development.
* Conca - leadership, mature young man. We did a lot of homework watching him last year. Always had someone watching him. Shows composure with the ball and impressed by his willingness at the footy. Milney got hold of him early but he stuck at it. Runs the patterns well.
* We have a number of measurements to measure our improvement (most are not very sexy) but wins/losses are still important. We were in front with a couple of minutes to play against St Kilda and just a lack of composure allowed the Saints to get some easy forward entries.
* ME Bank Centre very important. Old facilities were very archaic for about 15 years. Now the cricket club has gone we can now get on with redeveloping the Punt Rd oval surface and widening the oval a.s.a.p. All the recovery, player facilities etc ..will help the players. Players now spend more time at the club. No more excuses now.
* Jack a really passionate individual and you can't harness that but there are a lot of kids watching so it's probably right for the AFL to fine him and for Jack to apologise. Still a lot to learn for Jack and we don't want him kicking 78 goals every year and relying on him.
* FTF - ambitious $6 million target. Just shy of 2.5. Raised 2.1m in 20 minutes on the gala. Other initiatives will be rolled out throughout the year. If we want to kee up with the big boys we need to grow - fund various areas of the footy dept. Great start but a long way to go.
* Most improtant thing is membership. So if you haven't renewed or not a member join up. If you have spare over then donate to the FTF. No one is forcing anyone as we aren't going under; it's about growing the resources of the club.
* Massive facility upgrades at all clubs now in Victoria so that's pretty even now. FTF implies free agency as you need to invest and go other players but still it comes down to people make the right decisions.
* Excited about Collingwood game as it's another test. They are the benchmark and this is an opportunity to test ourselves against the best.
* With gambling a hot topic at the minute any difficulties having a betting agency as a sponsor in the current climate? No. We have a good lucrative relationship with luxbet. At the end of the day people have to take responsiblity for their own actions.
* Tucky a chance. Like last year as the grounds got heavier and the game slowed he came in and had a major impact. So he'll be on the cusp.
* Batchelor - steely resolve, mature, played U18s while working, excellent left foot.
* Taylor - no further update. Club in constant contact. Left club indefinitely. Found AFL tough. We've taken measures to support him as have other people. We've had to compromise our standards at times which hasn't worked. He's got to go away and decide if he wants to put in the work to make it and take responsibility for where he is at.
-
"We had to compromise our standards?"
WTF? not happy with that >:(
not happy at all, little twit is a waste of space eff him off
-
"We had to compromise our standards?"
Sounds like he got namby, pambied the first time due to his raw ability when perhaps we shouldn't have.
Ultimately that wasted a lot of time and resources.
On the face of it seems selfish stuff from Troy. He's let not only himself but many others down.
Oh well we live and learn..
-
Just come out say we got it wrong and move on.
Nice selection Jackson, picked a winner there

Edit: Updated summary in the 2nd post of this thread.

Just come out say we got it wrong and move on.
Nice selection Jackson, picked a winner there
Ben Gale gave the go ahead for that selection. Hardwick also had significant input. Everyone acknowledged it was a risk. Gale told them to be bold and have a crack. It was pick 50 not pick 8. Hardly the end of the world, gotta break a few eggs.
-
How does she like her bacon?
-
Grind-less is always better. Trim and taut.
-
Forget about Troy Taylor we took a chance and it failed, hardly something worth stigmatising a new resime with. Its not like we traded pick 19 for .................. :help
I am sure there is a player at all clubs who was taken above pick 40 or 50 that won't make it. Let it go.

Yes and it was a mistake by all parties concerned. Believe me Jackson is our guy who would've brought Taylor to the attention of all concerned.
You can get some gems around those later picks and we went for another Indigenous boy who has failed us.
We should just forget about those fellas until we know how to manage them. Clearly we have a problem in developing what else can explain that they all leave us.
Look at the dees for all their faults have Davey, Austin and Jurrah. Austin lost his dad and mate yet they still managed to talk him back.
We have no idea how to manage these guys no idea at all so better off not recruiting them at all.
We are not in a position to take risks which is why its disgraceful we re-rookeid Hislop when there are so many Curnow's and Lower's floating around.
-
Name them!
The club obviously doesn't think so as they did not use all their rookie spots.
You do understand that no club ever gets 100% of their draft picks right?
Colongwoood would have taken Taylor if we didnt - they talked him out of signing with the suns, who obviously wanted him as well.
But no, Jackson is the only fool in the world of football that thought he was worth the risk ::)

Read my post i just named 2. Curnow and Lower from this years draft. There are many more where that come from. Why draft Indigenous boys if we cant develop them properly. What is the point you tell me?
After the Barlow and Pods example we should've been looking at the VFL grade a little more closely not focusing our attention on a bloke who wears coloured boots and thought his poo dont stink.
Il say this if Taylor went to the Pies you can almost guarantee he would be playing in the VFL and not wearing those pathetic coloured boots.
To quote James Hird re: Kyle Riemers "He can wear those boots all he likes but it wont be playing for the senior team"
Perfect response no player is bigger than the club.
-
Players like Tom Derrickx perhaps? ::)
And Nick Lower? :lol
If RFC had picked up a 23yr old player delisted by world beaters Port Adelaide you would have screamed bloody murder from the rooftops.
Rightly so, he's average and won't play a part in Freo's side when all their players are back from injury.

DerickX goes allright dont worry about that :thumbsup
Plenty more where that come from pal. Buckley, The Camerons from North, the list goes on
Theres talent everywhere yet we opted for these spuds. Hislop is even more of a joke.
Taylor failing has as much to do with us than him.

I'm sure DX does go alright, nice scouting of the second tier leagues by FJ don't you agree?
You see how you're contradicting yourself right? :cheers

No i dont not at all. I didnt say he got all of them wrong. i.e Jack, Helbig :pray
DX, IMO will be good but has he played a game. NO. So how has FJ got that one right.
We are sitting near the bottom having played no finals since he came on board. Yes he got some right i.e Jack R etc etc but so many wrong.
IMO and its only my opinion he has had more failures than wins at this stage

There aren't but i can assure you if FJ was working at Collingwood with his strike rate well its fair to say he wouldnt have a job.
His record is far from impressive, now and even when he was employed P/T in the mid part of last decade
Let me ask you this in all seriousness. How do you rate his performance thus far since he arrived at the club on a F/T and P/T basis
-
Dont matter what color they are down at Tigerland, a few of the white boys are really struggling to cope with relocation. Give them more bags of lollies Benny or send them home.
Some McDonalds will help them, next generation will destroy the country ;D

If FJ was at Collingwood he would have substantially more resources at his disposal to assist in making these calls. The development side is still a major component towards whether a player makes it or not.
As for rating his performance, well the 2006 draft was his first proper one and he did very well out of that one
The 2007-2010 drafts are still too soon to judge, even the 2006 draft is still a work in progress

Kennedy not bad either
but RFC is the only club who's players get better when they leave ::)

:lol,
When you said "there are so many Curnow's and Lower's floating around." I thought you meant there was a heap of blokes with similar ability but different names (which is why I asked you to name them),not just a heap of blokes with the same name.
Do all all these Curnows and Lowthers play for the same club as Curnow and Lowther did?

Not based on those drafts they didn't, their grand final side was made up primarily of players from before then, only a handful of exceptions

With only 3 players from that list actually playing in the GF Dew, Rioli and Guerra, other then that there recruiting has been poo.
Hawthorns premiership team was built largely from 2000-2004 and then winning the premiership in 2008.
-
Boys Boys boys im saying pelchen contributed to them winning the flag. Dew, Rioli, Gilham, Guerra all played their part in the flag.
Who cares about Pelchen or the Hawks. Do you want to start comparing FJ and Clayton now too then?
At the end of the day you guys think he has done well i dont. We digress
I do agree with one thing you said its one thing to recruit the right player yet you have to develop them which i still think is our major problem even more than that of our recruiting.

Now you've changed your tune, Hawthorn built there Premiership list basically from 2000-2004 drafts and picking up 3-4 decent AFL players since 2005.
FJ has done an excellent job pretty much since 2006, sure a few draft picks haven't worked out, but as I've pointed out we aren't the only team to screw up a pick or 2, in fact Hawthorn have only 3-4 players still on there list out of 48 draft picks.
I think FJ strike rate at the moment is looking quite good. ;)

Changed my tune. You bring up pelchen and the hawks list not me, i couldnt care less but facts are they won a flag with those players you brought up in that team. 4 or 5 of em. Thats a good start.
I asked only about Jackson and you have told me what you think of his recruiting, i have told you what i think.

I'm sorry, please name those players, apart from 2-3 players out 48 draft picks with a number of top10 picks they have failed miserably apart from the good drafting period they had during 2000-2004.
Since FJ has come on board he has done a far better job with the resources and picks he has had at his disposal including the compromised draft.

I think FJ strike rate at the moment is looking quite good. ;)
birchall, ellis and renouf also played significant roles in the gf and the season as a whole. thats about 7 or 8 and about a 3rd of the side roughly, take it easy know it all

Changed my tune. You bring up pelchen and the hawks list not me, i couldnt care less but facts are they won a flag with those players you brought up in that team. 4 or 5 of em. Thats a good start.

dont forget we've had a shhedload more better picks in that time on account of us being poo and the hawks , you know, winning a flag. FJ has been ok but id hardly say hes set us up, lots of question marks around most of our list - could still go either way

So out of 6 top10 draft picks and a total of 10 top30 draft picks while using 48 draft picks in total for a return of 7-8 semi-standard players is a good strike rate is it?
And who says I'm a know it all? I'm merely offering a different opinion, people can bang on all they like about our waste of draft picks but simple fact is there are other clubs who waste the similar if not more amount of picks then us.

So from 2006 onwards when FJ came in how many top10 or even top30 draft picks has he wasted.

You've hit the nail on the head there Daniel. If the coaches aren't capable of developing players it leaves recruiters carrying the can with zero margin to work with.

wtf are u going on abt? - Im just simply stating that 7-8 players played a role in that GF, thats not just bit part thats 1/3 of the friggen team, so bottom line is he helped them win a premiership and regardless of the crap picks in and around those - he still has a flag on his CV - something we all envy.... end of argument.

At the end of the day all you can ask for is exactly that, a flag.
Some may also argue Dew, a recruit, although im sure was Clarko's choice played a major role on GF day.
Facts are if you win a flag then everyone plays their part. From the coaches, assistants down to the Box Hill Players.

FJ has had 4 years to put together a list, pretty much since 2006-2010, with the picks FJ has had at his disposal and the limited resources FJ hasn't really wasted that many picks.
Pelchen pretty much did the same thing from 2000-2004 and everything after that has been a disaster, people were pointing out in this thread how the club wastes a lot of picks I'm merely pointing out that there are plenty of other teams who get plenty wrong also.
In fact if FJ goes on to waste another 40 odd draft picks top10 draft picks included mind you it would be safe to say these boards would go into meltdown.

dont forget that a recruiter will be recruiting based on the type of player asked for from the coach.
Blind Freddy could see that the type of players, in particular last years draft, are different to those taken in the wallace era.

Pelchen didn't arrive at the club until after the 2004 draft, it was Buckenara before that

You are right, my bad big oversight on my behalf, all that really shows though is how bad his drafting has been since arriving at Hawthorn.
