Title: Our Greatest Rival?
Post by: one-eyed on April 20, 2011, 02:27:44 PM
Mark Fine says it's Collingwood since 1908 and it's the fourth biggest rivalry in footy.....

4. Richmond and Collingwood, 1908-present.

This is another case of neighbours who couldn't get on, but in the case of the tough inner city suburbs of Collingwood and Richmond this rivalry, at least in its early days, was played out by hard men who knew how to mete out punishment.

Legend has it that Jack Dyer would not serve children who followed Collingwood in his milk bar and whilst that may be apocryphal, what is known is that Dyer would tell all Richmond players when they joined the club they automatically became haters of all things black and white.

The feuding clubs went to war in the eighties when Richmond lured young Magpie star Phillip Walsh across to Punt Road.

Walsh had just been named the League’s recruit of the year in 1984 when he signed with the Tigers. Over the next few years an inordinate number of players would move between the two clubs in a tit-for-tat war that had little to do with list management, and seemed only to fuel the flames of hatred between the two.

In recent years the rivalry has gone dormant as Richmond has fallen on lean times, but rest assured when the Pies and Tigers are once again powerhouses hostilities will be resumed.

As George Orwell's 1984 warned us, in a fascist (football) state history can be re-written by the winners.Looks like Mark Fine is trotting out the same distorted rubbish that Eddie spewed out on the radio a few weeks ago. We need to remind them that it was Collingwood who started the trade wars when they lured the disgruntled Cloke and Raines away in the wake of the 1982 Grand Final. Philip Walsh was payback. Only it blew up in our faces, because we paid big bucks for him and he was crap, like most of the rubbish we lured from them at the time. They also stole Brian Taylor off us, because some genius at the club was convinced that he and Roach in the same forward line would make us top-heavy.

What about Bryan Wood going to the Bombers?

The Verucas had a few other Tigers didn't they?

I think the whole football world back then looked on with green envy at Richmond and decided to try to kill us off once and for all.
They nearly did.

Amazing the club is at where it is now.

We still haven't got to those heady heights.

The media still hate us even after 30 years of no trophies.

I could count a few on one hand that stick up for Richmond and the rest just hate us with a passion.

They magnify our negatives and play down our positives.

One day we will have the last laugh and stick it up em.

In order, I'd probably say that Carlton is our #1 Rival, followed by the Maggots, then Essendon. It's fair to say that we hate all 3 of them with a passion though, so maybe it's not that easy to order them.

I think most Tiger supporters who grew up in the 60s/70s would say Carlton but the original rival from the year dot was Collingwood as Jack Dyer would remind us on World of Sport. Their feral supporters make them the worst and now they are on top you try to avoid them at all costs :chuck. Another reason to hate St Kilda as well for drawing that first GF.
