Title: What to do with Griffiths this year????
Post by: Stripes on May 16, 2011, 04:44:20 PM
A great deal of hope has been pinned on our young recruit Benny Griffiths. We all hope he will become our next star Half Forward to compliment Jack but we are wary of his shoulder concerns.

So should be bring him back at all this year and if so, then when and for how long?

Who will make side for his return given the improved performance of Miller and Vickery both individually and structurally?

The old cop out line of - let the coaches decide - isn't good enough! What's your opinion   ??? :cheers

I would suggest that Griffiths should probably stay in the Reserves all year. If he does make a return then I would want it to be near the latter part of the year after he has had time to regain fitness and faith in his shoulders. In addition I wouldn't want him to return if he is still too undersized to play as a leading forward against any of the other monster defenders of the competition. Vickery is no giant body wise yet but Griffiths will be very light on in the upper body when he first returns.

Secondly I wouldn't want him to come in and take Millers place yet until he inconclusively earns it. I feel Miller has been great for the team so far this year in terms of structure, experience and tactically to divert attention away from Jack and Vickery while bringing the ball to ground for King, Nahas and co. Unless he is 100% ready I don't think Griffiths should return until much later in the year.

I'm not sure if you want others to contribute to this thread.   ???but I'd say play him when he's ready and form warrants a game

Keep in mind that Griffith's inclusion in the side is not necessarily at the expense of Miller. He can play in defense. Might have been a good option for Minson yesterday.

No I just plan on using it as a Blog I write a series of questions at the end of each post which I answer with my next post so please stop interrupting  :shh

I wonder though if they may bring him back into the side as soon as he is fit rather than as soon as he earns it?

It seems like our forwardline has suddenly become a strength for us, probably helped with the extra assistance they are getting from the midfield but it is our defence that appears the most vulnerable. So perhaps you're right - is he any good as a defender though?

when fit should be getting as many games as we can into him.

Honestly how can he be no worse than a fully fit Nason or Graham.

I would keep him at Coburg for the next few weeks then set him up for a return immediately after that

 :lol

Just treat like he is one of 42, he's plenty good enough to play just needs match fitness.

Did Miller play more forward or back for Melbourne?

The club really needs to be ultra-cautious with Griffiths in my opinion. He's just too valuable for us. How did he go for Coburg reserves in terms of contested marking?

I wouldn't waste Griff down back, put him at CHF, if Miller can't work in the same forward line then he can go down back . . . of course, when form, fitness (and strength in his shoulders) are up.

Play him once he is fit and has earned a spot. Just like everyone else.

Play the full year in the reserves.

- Gets confidence in his ability
- Gets confidence in his fitness and shoulders
- Minimal pressure from fans to develop quicker as a KPP

Unless he has multiple BOG's in a row guys like Post, Browne etc should be tried before Benny G, if anything for list management reasons.

Benny G has tasted AFL and never been in a losing side. He'll have the passion and desire for it and a full VFL year would be a great stepping stone for a big pre season for him.

when he is ready he must play chf and miller must go to chb

why?

Would prefer Moore, astbury, post chb instead of mcgaune or miller

Interesting the polarized opinion of people evident in the poll above.

Roughly half the voters think we should bring him back as soon as he is fit regardless of form while the other half believe we should wait until his form warrants a call up.... :-\

I don't really like any of the poll options
I just think we should bring him back when he's ready, pretty simple

Griffiths is our future CHF star Miller is just keeping the spot warm for him.
I think we should bring him back as soon as he's played a couple of Coburg games. There's no use persisting with Miller if he's not in our future plans.
You could use Miller as a permanent CHF coach for the boy.

So you would would bring him back when he ready - physically/injury-wise, form wise or fitness & form together?

When he is fully fit -he plays....and I hope he brings that 100% winning record with him.

Miller couldn't do any worse in the backline than Rance or Mcguane.

if hes fit and he finds form play him.
a coupl;e of things lets not forget we are still in rebuild mode, so finding playing and getting games into as many kids as possible should still be our priority. surely griffiths falls into this category. the other point for me is he missed a lot of last yr and will miss a lot of this yr,  when fit and in form give him 4 or 5 games more if his form warrants it.

Mainly fitness related, if he can run out 2 full VFL games then bring him in.

He must play at least 2-3 senior games at Coburg

Massive gulf between VFL seniors & reserves (why they call the reserves "the development game" is stupid)

We have a break coming up around round 11 ish.

If Griff is fit I would bring him back in after the break to play the rest of the season.

Last year at a club 80 function Griff was asked (when he was playing but only getting a few possies in the seniors) whether he thought it was better to get only say 5 kicks in the seniors or play at coburg where he might dominate and get more experience.

His response was quite interesting, he said that for his developement playing in the seniors was better than going to coburg and racking up the stats.  The reason why - the grounds that coburg play at are diff to the mcg and etihad.  He said he was learning more by playing on the bigger grounds that suited him more than the smaller ones that coburg plays at.  Interestingly he knew last year that his role was to take his defender away from JR8 (unlike say sarge that would lead to the same spot as richo and bring his defender with him).

On this basis I would agree that if fit play him in the seniors and get as many games into him as possible.
