Title: Richmond V Essendon Match Thread
Post by: WA Tiger on May 17, 2011, 05:45:16 PM
Well I have a funny feeling that this game for us will turn out to be Nightmare at the MCG instead of Dreamtime....Going by our starts to games this year it could be a 10 goal to 1 first qtr..

I would love to have more confidence but form really says it all... :scream

Dont really care about the quarter time score WAT as long as we are in front when it counts. :thumbsup

However I do share your frustration at the slow starts.

I believe we will go close to beating Essendon if we can eliminate the ridiculous stupid "school boy" errors such as the "fresh air" swings committed by Rance and Graham on the goal line.

Not having basic footy smarts is gifting the opposition too many soft goals.

Win the centre square clearances and we are a real show

A ruckman with half a clue on how to give our mids an advantage in this area would be helpful  :wallywink

Its going to mean alot to James Hird to win this game on saturday night being the first Dreamtime and first game against richmond as coach. Hird and Thompson (The real mastermind behind the rise of Essendon this year) have been all about making statements, they are going to want to make one against us on Saturday night and I think they will.

Essendon to win by 10 to 15 goals possibly more.

Warrior wear to toughen up Tigers
Sam Morwood

From: Herald Sun May 18, 2011 12:00AM

RICHMOND players will wear guernseys featuring indigenous motifs in the Dreamtime Saturday night clash against Essendon at the MCG.
The artwork depicts footballs on either side of a river on the traditional yellow sash. Indigenous Round features a "warrior" theme.

"The footballs on either side of the river mimic the shape of shields used by Aboriginal warriors," designer Jirra Lulla Harvey said.

"Aboriginal football players are not only great athletes, but ... local heroes and community ambassadors.

"For our young people, AFL stars are seen as contemporary warriors."

Tiffany Cherry's Flash Footy documentary on indigenous footballers will screen on Fox Sports One at 7pm tonight.

Awful jumper. Bordering on our worst.

Looks like we've sown on an offcut from a pair of happy pants

Would of been much better to transform the sash into a band of yellow dots, ala dot painting style...if anything at all.

The artwork on the sash was design by a local Indigenous artist Jirra Lulla Harvey:

Sash transformed for Dreamtime
richmondfc.com.au 6:44 AM Wed 18 May, 2011

Richmond players will embrace the 2011 Dreamtime at the ‘G clash with Essendon on Saturday night by wearing specially-themed guernseys.

The famous yellow sash on the Tigers’ jumper will feature a design by local Indigenous artist Jirra Lulla Harvey.

"The Dreamtime at the G is a great celebration of the wonderful contribution the Indigenous community has made to our game," Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said.

"We think the artwork incorporated into our iconic sash adds to this celebration and demonstrates our on-going commitment to this game and the role football can play in closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australia."

New strip has Egan speechless
By Jason Phelan
2:56 PM Wed 18 May, 2011

Former Richmond Tiger Phil Egan in 1989

FORMER Richmond player Phil Egan admits the sight of the Tigers' specially-themed Dreamtime at the 'G guernsey almost brought him to tears.

The club's famous yellow sash has been adorned with a design by local Aboriginal artist Jirra Lulla Harvey as part of the AFL's Indigenous Round, which celebrates the contribution of indigenous players to the game.

Egan, who played 125 games for Richmond between 1982 and 1990, said it was a stunning tribute.

"It's really taken my breath away," Egan said from Punt Road Oval on Wednesday.

"To change the iconic strip … demonstrates to me as a black fella, the commitment that this club has to Aboriginal culture and what we're trying to do and achieve.

"It's not about how many players we have at any given time … to see that strip like that, it gives me a lump in the throat really.

"It demonstrates fully the commitment this football club has to what it's saying it is going to do."

Egan has been delighted by the role the AFL and his former club have taken in trying to stamp out racism in the game, but said there was still plenty of work to be done on the issue at the community level.

The Tigers will not have an indigenous player in their side for the big game against Essendon, which has gone under the Dreamtime at the 'G title since 2005, after Shane Edwards underwent surgery for a fractured cheekbone earlier in the week.

The match promises to draw a huge crowd to the MCG on Saturday night with both teams dramatically improving on last year's form.

Tigers welcome big stage test

    Michael Horan
    From: Herald Sun
    May 18, 2011, 2:08pm

DREAMTIME is not just about the annual clash against Essendon that celebrates our Indigenous football stars. This time it also symbolised what might lie beyond for the Tigers.

Three wins on the trot before faltering against the Bulldogs has given the emerging Tigers an appetite for bigger things and, with a huge crowd expected at the MCG on Saturday, an acid test on the big stage beckons.

''I think it makes it a lot better that both sides are on the up and up,'' Tiger Matthew White said today, while sporting the specially designed jumper for the clash.

''We've been playing pretty well the last few weeks - we've got three wins even though we were a little disappointing on the weekend - but Essendon has shown they are also on the way up and so it's going to be a good clash between two big sides in Melbourne.

"It's going to be great to get 90,000 people there to cheer us on."

The Bombers are an even bigger success story this year under new coach James Hird, sitting third on the table and, for all intents and purposes, finals bound.

Essendon will be missing prime over and captain Jobe Watson due to a hamstring injury and important link man Heath Hocking (suspended), but White said it would be folly to think their absence breeds an overdose of confidence in the Tiger camp.

''You can't underestimate Essendon at the moment. They are two big players that are coming out of their side, but they've got guys like (Brent) Prismall to come back in and he's shown form down at VFL level and he's a big player as well,'' he said.

The Dreamtime game has become a big occasion on the annual football calendar, but White said it was business as usual at Punt Rd this week.

''Pretty much everything is the same. We've released the jumper now. We've been trying to keep everything pretty low key, knowing there's going to be a big crowd this weekend,'' he said.

for me there can be no excuses again this week for not winning. bloody hell they have some players on the injury list.
if they lack depth in a critical area i would say its inside ball winners. no watson no hocking probably their best two inside players out this week really gives us an opportunity. and no hurley pears gumbleton and others geez what an opportunity we have on the big stage.

AFL site is tipping Essendon by 14 pts......

SUMMARY
There is already a sense of ceremony about this one as the focal point of this week's Indigenous Round. But there is added anticipation about the game for the first time in years both Essendon and Richmond are exciting teams.

The Bombers are probably ahead of the Tigers at the moment but both have significantly improved on what we saw last year. Essendon will undoubtedly miss injured skipper Jobe Watson as well as the suspended Heath Hocking which should work to Richmond's advantage.

The Tigers have two of the most exciting young midfielders in the league in Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin and they seem to be getting better with every passing week this season. Throw in debutant Reece Conca, who has shown he doesn't mind a contest, and Jack Riewoldt and the Tigers all of a sudden look like one of the AFL's most exciting young teams.

QUESTION MARKS
Just how important is Jobe Watson to Essendon's midfield? He is clearly their best on-baller and his absence will mean higher expectations on players such as David Zaharakis and David Myers. Both players performed admirably last week, but their value has shot up without their injured captain.

Where is Brett Deledio best suited for the Tigers? He started out as half-back last week where he was shut out by Bulldog Dylan Addison. A move into the midfield kick-started things for the former No.1 NAB AFL Draft pick and it might be where he belongs, particularly as the Tigers look to expose an undermanned Essendon engine room.

PREDICTION
Essendon by 14 points

Title: Re: Richmond V Essendon Match Thread
Post by: one-eyed on May 19, 2011, 08:11:09 PM
Sportal thinks it'll be close...

WE THINK:
The Bombers are likely to have Brent Stanton available to cover for injured skipper Jobe Watson. If Essendon's supporters don't boo the hapless Stanton, Richmond's will. Richmond's midfield is harder and deeper than Essendon's, but the Tigers have a problem in defence and in the ruck where Angus Graham carries a huge load.

Overwhelmed by Ben Hudson and Will Minson last week, Graham won't fancy being triple-teamed by Tom Bellchambers, David Hille and Paddy Ryder.

The Bombers have winning form to recommend them and their best is better than the Tigers' who took the proverbial one step back last week after advancing three steps forward in Rounds 5, 6 and 7. If the Tigers bring their best intensity, they're a show, but it's Essendon by 10 points.

Richmond's Dreamtime strip a disgrace, says Liberal MP Bernie Finn

    Stephen McMahon
    From: Herald Sun
    May 19, 2011

RICHMOND'S jumper for the Saturday night clash with Essendon is a disgrace, controversial Liberal MP Bernie Finn says.

He said the Tigers' jumper should be sacred and not adorned with "graffiti" across the yellow sash to celebrate indigenous culture and mark the annual Dreamtime clash that is expected to attract about 80,000 fans to the MCG.

The passionate Richmond fan and active club member is unimpressed with the club's decision to change the guernsey for the game.

"The Richmond jumper is black with a yellow sash. End of story," Mr Finn said.

"It shouldn't be interfered with for any reason. A football club's jumper is like the nation's flag. Leave them both alone."

Mr Finn's comments come as the Herald Sun today revealed the Baillieu Government was moving away from acknowledging traditional Aborginal land owners.

The Premier has confirmed he will no longer force ministers and public servants to acknowledge traditional Aboriginal land owners at official events.

In a major policy shift that has upset some indigenous leaders, the State Government has dumped a Labor protocol as too politically correct.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/richmonds-dreamtime-strip-a-disgrace-says-liberal-mp-bernie-finn/story-e6frf9jf-1226058969481

And here is Hardwick's response.....

Hardwick has described as 'ill-informed' criticism of the club's 'Dreamtime' guernsey by State Member of Parliament and Richmond diehard, Bernie Finn.

The long-serving and outspoken Liberal party backbencher described the Aboriginal design that adorns the yellow sash as 'graffitti'.

"Oh Bernie please," Hardwick sighed.

"I think it's a bit ill-informed, to be honest."

"This is the first time in the history of our club that we've changed the sash of our guernsey and it shows how seriously we do take it and how honoured we are to have the ability to play this game."

Having had the (mis)fortune of sitting behind Mr Finn at the footy a few times, have to say his comments don't surprise me. I've heard him say some shocking things

I love the concept of the tribute jumper, think the club should be commended for it because it has done a really good thing by coming up with the idea. But as I posted the other day I wasn't taken with the design but that is a personal choice but I fully support the idea

But to call it "graffiti" is wrong & more importantly disrespectful to all involved with this important game IMHO

Bernie Finn is like graffiti - you see too much of him and he's a waste of space. The only time you hear him is whinging about stuff no one else cares about :stupid. It's a one-off FFS! Get a life Bernie ::)  :sleep

I bet both our major sponsors aren't complaining. If we didn't have the one-off then the guernsey both front and back wouldn't have been displayed by Brayshaw on the footy show to 500k national viewers.

The second set of figures is the audience for non-heartland states Stripes. Going by those ratings figures, as many people in Melbourne watch the NRL footy show as they do in Brisbane even though it's shown in Brisbane at 9.30pm and in Melbourne later at 11.30pm.

Hird said he was surprised Richmond had dropped ruckman Angus Graham from its side.

Hird said the emerging Tiger onball division posed a huge challenge, one Essendon must beat to be a legitimate top side.

"Richmond has got an excellent midfield. It moves the ball really well and has great talent, so losing Jobe and Heath (Hocking) this week isn't ideal," Hird said.

Yep nice day, warmest in Melb for about a month, just a tad breezy.

Wouldn't be surprised by an 80-85k crowd.

Leaving at 6pm to get there early. Pizzas at 5.30, so I've got a couple of hours to kill.

Might go hang a Larry Bird, then rub one out and have a Kip.....

Well given their coaching panel is paid almost as much as the total player payments of the team that played tonight, I hope that he didn't make any excuses for the coaches.

Great win by the team - Port needs to be a big win and things start looking promising.

I know certain people don't like Alex Rance on this forum but he looked spent after the game - left nothing in the tank.

To be brutal,
Tuckie deserved to be subbed
Farmer is way too slow at present for AFL
Helbig was a little bit out of sorts with the pace of the game.
The good thing is White can take one of these spots.

The Grimes injury is now a really tricky one to cover with the way the kid's been playing.
Do you go for a tall to replace him and choose Thirsty, Gourdis or Astbury.
or do you go for the more conventional HBF in Webberley, Dea, Connors

Some players at Coburg need to stick their hands up to get a game, including that group and Morton/Hislop.

Who would ever have thought that replacing Grimes would be tricky! Such a shame he was palying well!
I thought Postie looked real slow early but he showed enough enough tonight to me interested in keeping him!
I think Astbury has to be the man to replace Grimes!

I loved his game tonight. Gave everything and punched well above his weight division and won the points.
He has come on in leaps and bounds this year and yep I'd have him in my bests.

I think Grimes has slotted in nicely to our backline and he'll be a loss next week but Astbury is a good kid and he'll slot in nicely.

just got back  - stuff yeah!!!
TV's best game to date, looks commanding and has an inate ability to create space out of nothing in confined spaces, the way he cooly slotted the sealer is when i lost my voice.

Rance continues to come along - yes he'll have some bad days hes only played 30odd games remember but you'd have to be a douchebag not to see the massive improvement in him this season.

Cotchin, Lids, Martin I love yous all

Nahas and Kingy how bloody good are they??

Browne was thrown to the wolves tonight - did a few silly things but worked his heart out - I thought Posty had an impact and looked good at times but got really annoyed in the last when he seemed to go for goal from the boundary line instead of centreing it

Bachar Houli has slotted in like he was born to play for us. The tackling and pressure we put on those dribblers was first class- we still cop a lot of dumb dumb goals but our defensive work rate was outstanding - we ran them ragard and should have nailed them late in the 3rd but all good we won a big game in front of a monster crowd and responded when challenged late whereas 5-6 weeks ago I would have said game over we've stopped and gone to pieces.

Keep going Dimma doing a bloody fantastic job!

not sure what role post played, but jack stayed out of the contest a fair bit and allowed vickery to mark or at least bring the ball to ground, (where jack is as dangerous, if not more so ,than with the ball in air,) Not sure if post had a similar type role or not?

I thought for a while we missed the structure that miller gave us, but they had changed the structure and it ended up working OK.

Essendon what a poo club. All their game plan is bomb it forward bring it to ground and have one of there 10 small forwards run riot..

Monfries, Zaharakis, Jetta, Davey, Riemers all little pigs that you'd throw under a bus.

Watching the replay now, ge Lids was good. We forget how good he is now he's not the only decent player on the list. 34 possies, you sort of just expect that now but it's still a super effort.

Essendons Best Players:
Thought Hille was the best big man on the ground even though his impact was minimal.
Fletcher was Essendons best backman
McVeigh was quite good aswell in the midfield.

All above 30.

They have some OK youth, other than Watson and potentially Heppell no top future stars.

I thought Dimma's outcoached Jimmy Bomber or whoever is the coach at Wimpy Hill as knowledge of how Fletcher plays helped us as Dimma made him more accountable rather than Fletcher running off his opponent.
BIck tick for DImma there prepared well and his coaching move paid off.

The poor dears are sooking about the umps and especially Martin's 'handball' in the last qtr that resulted in a goal to us.

They must have missed the free against BrownE at a throw-in in the 2nd qtr despite him being shoved in the upper back and then the advantage rule call after everyone had stopped which gifted Howlett a goal. I thought the umpiring was fairly decent last night minus a couple of mistakes to both sides. The holding/dropping the ball rule was let go for both sides.

HEY Davey (where are those other reprobates by the way?).  How funny is the bombers thread.  The umpiring did become comical in the last quarter, prior to that I was cursing them for ignoring all the illegal holds on our forwards etc.   Maybe Q4 was the square up LOL.  The throw they are bitching about was not a throw, Wallsy made a big goddam song and dance about it being the big anti Richmond sook that he is before watching the third close up replay which clearly shows Martin get his arms free and get off a legal handpass imo.  So they can bitch till the rapture oh thats today isnt it?  Hookers and beer !

You've got to be kidding

Under pressure when he's run what 10 metres towards the goals ....er NOPE ...bloody stupid you betcha

Apart from not taking the first option who was McGunae who then would have gone to Conca or kicking it all he need to do was h/ball to Luke McGuane who was surrounded by 2 bombers, Luke gets tackled and it's a ball up ....

Absolutely the right decision by the umpire. to be honest apart from that strange decision in the 2nd with the advantage rule I thought the umpires were very good especially in the last qtr when they let things go

Guarantee you this if the teams were reversed and it was say Fletcher who did what Grigg did we would have been screaming for a free

Another umpiring decision where the advantage rule is bogus. Whistle is blown all player stopped Umpire waves advantage Howlett kicks a goal from 50m. Should have brought it back as Howlett didn't elect to take advantage but when realised everyone had stopped took it. Sook up Windy Mill.

What about Cotch getting holding the ball.... when no-one had tackled him!!

tell me about it

dodgy

Thanks to the inequities of the draw, we get to beat Essendon all over again in just 7 weeks.

Let the good times roll. :lol :rollin

Great win by the boys. Especially Rance thought his game was very good hopefully thats the level he see's him self at and keeps at it.
Hopefully Grimes is alright looked like a hamstring.

Think Rance put in everything he had and more, he was busy throwing up while the rest of the team were handing out the footys  :chuck

Thought he was very stiff not be best on to be honest.
After watching the game again, definately would have given Rance BOG.

After finally getting home from game last night  :lol, I watched the replay.   :gotigers

Rance, he still has to have some of the rough edges knocked off him but even Jackstar would have to say he sure puts his body on the line. Impressed with his improvement this year.

Big Browne was totally stuffed I agree but that did not stop him from competing and having a crack, he even won hitouts because he goes for the ball (Angus watch). Good first outing for year and his match fitness will improve.

I think Grigg has had a bad couple of weeks and maybe should be given a run in the 2's. Tucky wasn't the greatest either.

Enjoyed the game, couldn't wait to get home and see the replay to pick up some of the stuff I missed being at the game. Yes that's having a go at those that say if you are not there you don't have a right to comment.

No Lids?  Not often a bloke gets 34 touches and is instrumental in turning the game his team's way and isn't rewarded in team of the week.
