The opposition to this reminds me of Yes Minister episode of the chain smoking Sports Minister who Hacker promoted to Health Minister.

"Tobacco taxes pay for one third of the health system. We're saving far more lives thanks to those smokers who voluntarily lay down their lives for the good of the country."
"It's much cheaper to let them to continue to die at the present rate..."

Though I am not sure what his mates at the tobacco companies think after their many generous donations to Tony's 2010 election campaign
Would think they'd be a tad disappointed ;D

I heard him say the other day that, yes, they do receive donations, but that has absolutely no influence on the decisions the party makes lol

He is going to pass it because he knows it the real challenge for it is the high court.
Im against this move. Don't get me wrong less smokers the better. But you cant let the government be able to one day decide to stripe you of your brand and logo.

Tobacco companies are legalised mass murderers making a deliberately highly addictive product that causes premature death and chronic disease/illness. Good luck to them crying to the High Court claiming they are just like any other company. Betting agencies can't place their brand and logo on kids' guernseys sold in shops. So there's a precedence of Government intervention being allowed if it's in the public's interest. The Government will still allow ciggies to be sold in shops so it's not a restraint of trade.
