Time for answers from the Tigers after another disappointing loss
Mike Sheahan
From: Herald Sun
July 18, 2011
DESPITE the inevitable fallout, the issue is not whether Richmond should have sold two home games, rather why it failed against the teams it has played in those transferred games.
In nine weeks, Richmond has lost to Port Adelaide in Darwin and to Gold Coast in Cairns, clubs that occupy the bottom two positions on the ladder with five wins between them, including the Richmond double.
Right now, the $1 million compensation doesn't seem to cover the cost in terms of wins and supporter morale, yet the commercial matter distorts the real issue.
When the Tigers headed to Darwin in Round 10, they were ninth with four wins and a draw. Teams below them included Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda.
Those three have bounded past them, and the gap is going to widen.
It's only a matter of time before Gold Coast does the same.
Blaming the travel, an unfamiliar venue, maybe even the weather (mild), is a cop-out.
What seems to have been missed in all this is that Gold Coast also travelled - two hours in the air - and that Cazaly's Stadium was no more familiar to most of its players.
The more significant message from the game is the likelihood Gold Coast will play finals before Richmond; the overpowering probability is the first-year team will be first to a premiership.
Gold Coast has an outstanding young ruckman in Zac Smith and at least one classy key defender in Nathan Bock; Richmond has neither a ruckman nor a key defender.
GC has better midfield depth, too, despite the bullish early-season talk about the Tigers group.
Trent Cotchin is the standout, Dustin Martin will be a star - but he is off the boil - but the black and yellow support team is modest.
GC has Gary Ablett and David Swallow for those two, plus Michael Rischitelli and many promising youngsters.
The Coasters also look to have more options forward, particularly with Jack Riewoldt carrying injuries and down on confidence.
Riewoldt moved as if he had a back problem and was proppy, suggesting an ankle worry.
Sadly for Richmond, reality isn't matching expectations - again.
The Tigers need to win three more games to be seen to have progressed this year after six wins last year.
They play the Swans, Melbourne, Adelaide (away) and North Melbourne in the last four rounds, hardly a daunting program. Yet, where is the improvement going to come from?
Since beating the Brisbane Lions, they have lost to Melbourne, Carlton, Essendon and Gold Coast by a total of 184 points.
They kicked 6.8 in the first quarter on Saturday and 9.16 for the match. Shameful.
They had 50 more possessions and lost.
Either it's a flawed game plan or horribly executed. They go sideways and short, with no apparent faith in those ahead.
If they're to have a chance of unsettling teams, surely it is to move the ball directly and quickly to Riewoldt and Tyrone Vickery.
Chris Newman, Bachar Houli and Brett Deledio, all lovely kicks, had 91 disposals between them.
Why don't they play under an instruction to run forward and kick long? Old-fashioned, I know, but it might be worth a try.
Coach Damien Hardwick looked mortified as he trudged from the rooms after the game. This one cut deeper than probably any in his career, as player or coach. It leaves him with six wins from 23 games.
He had vented his spleen to the players after the game, apparently with passionate vocal support from Cotchin. Cotchin may be just 21, but he's the team's best player and the next captain. It seems he had had enough, like the bulk of the supporters.

And that's exactly what we were doing earlier in the year when we were competitive and winning games.
-
good article Mike.
Even you can see we go sideways and short, why ?
Game plan stinks thats why
Time to go Dimma,
-
Im happy that Cotchin had a go as well. That gives us hope. Atleast 1 kid gives a poo about the footy club. Now lets see if he has any mates. Newman should be sent to GWS no point in continuing with him hes 28yo not going to see any success with us.
-
Mike sounds almost disgusted in us when comparing the relative depth and quality of the two lists. Why should he be so surprised that in all probability they'll win a flag before us? This is what will inevitably happen when the AFL gifts their new Frankenstein a truckload of early draft picks, as well as letting them plunder the opposition's best players.
-
Blaming the travel, an unfamiliar venue, maybe even the weather (mild), is a cop-out.
Who from the club has been blaming these factors? ???

Time to go Dimma,
"time to go Dimma"
6 weeks ago was it time to go? When the game plan was working was it time to go? Nope
He is 18 months into a job that every man and his dog knew was going to take a bloody long time
Jack - we're mates most of the time but geez your constant blaming of the coach year after year after is so bloody boring - there is more to it than the coach and right at the minute it's got more to do with the players than anything else but always you look for the easiest target
And people wonder why Tiger fans get branded as being Feral ::)

Time to go Dimma,
You seem to have a real problem with coaches Jack?! :P
Dimma's game plan is on record as kicking it long and direct into the forwardline to give the forwards the best chance. He also directs the players to play on at every opportunity and bring the ball back into the middle to cut through opposition zones. It is the backline and midfield that are not executing game plan. For whatever reason they are not running, creating overlaps and space, not taking risks and seemed leaderless.
While the coaces are far from blameless, the players need to take the majority of the responsibility here.
-
Time to go Dimma,
LMFAO pick one of the current Richmond assistant coaches to take us to the promised land then because no-one outside the club will apply if Dimma gets the sack, except maybe Terry :lol
He had vented his spleen to the players after the game, apparently with passionate vocal support from Cotchin. Cotchin may be just 21, but he's the team's best player and the next captain. It seems he had had enough, like the bulk of the supporters.
Make him Captain next year.
-
Nothing to do with the Coach or the game plan, we have a very good Coach, our players do not have the skill to execute the game plan simple as that.
Get rid of the crap players, get players in that can execute the game plan and watch the change.

so what is it. Players including Lids and newman are not good enough to execute the instructions or they dont respect Dimma.
Which is it.
I like Dimma dont get me wrong but that 3rd quarter crap from most players including senior ones was a disgrace
-
Doesn't the club realise that pathetic performances are ripping the hearts out of its faithfull. I have followed them for close to 45 years, and they have progressivly deteriorated since 2001. It's time to take a good hard long look at those people who are not prepared to sacrifice everything for the club. Simply pulling on a Richmond jumper dosn't make you a Tiger. Working for the club in any capasity should be more than a job! We the loyal Tiger supporters have had enough! It's not just the loss to G .C .S., its the obvious lack of Black and Yellow blood in the club in general, from the top down. Maybe it's time for us to show our disgust collectively in front of Punt Road. Something serious need to be done now!
-

For mine daniel it has to start at the top and in this case that is the captain.
He is the ultimate leader on the field and he has to set the example, followed by the v-c in Foley, then Lids, then Cotch and the rest of the leaders
In the last 4 games the lack of leadership from our Captain has been painstakenly obvious. He had won me over in the last 12 months but he's started to lose me again in the last month

dimmas game plan for the last 6 weeks has been kicking short.
Going has got tough and whats happens, we go to short kicking game :banghead

sorry but the Fish rots from the head down
Get the big bucks $$$$$$, take the blame
-
Good article to be honest.Like how he see's why the hell we were going backwards and not moving the ball quickly. Some parts dont agree with him tho saying Suns a better all over ruck no doubt.Forward line ??? we have riewolt, vickery and griffths micke thats our spine for the next 10 years.Backline I do agree a bit ,but like most journalist this year failed to mention injurys there have killed us not talk of grimes, moore or astbury who are in our best 22.Midfield I only seen ablett and swallow there what depth is he talking. Our midfeild is good ,but sometimes they dont stand up when the games in balance and they are not benefiting from a ruckman to win a tap out at all.

You see this is where your argument loses validity Jack- you are flip flopping like a pollie
You have clearly said in this thread Dimma can't coach
In the next post you says it all about the last 6 weeks so what was the deal before then ???
or to put it more simply:
6 weeks he could coach yes or no?
Or is it your view that 6 weeks ago he couldn't coach but you didn't care becasue we were either winning or being competitive
Make up your mind
-
I reckon he had a run of good luck more than anything..
No doubt of recent times the game plan has changed dramatically .
We have gone from being able to clear the ball out of D50, to not being able to clear
This is due to the short kicking game that has been introduced in recent times.
Dammed if i know why.
We have six games left for the season, in which I dont see us winning any I am afraid.
if we lose all six, who knows what happens at years end
Will see if he can coach this week.
I will be watching from home I might add.
brisbane did a great job yesterday in stopping Geelong to a certain extent
Lets see what the coach learnt from Brisbanes effort.

Or maybe the gameplan is the same, but players are lacking the confidence required to execute it. Houli always seems to look to kick it long and straight, which I think is great. More players should follow his lead. Once we cut more dead wood at the end of the year, and recruit more good, confident, big bodied kids, we should see a decent improvement.
I want to see a rookie cleanout at the end of the year, in addition to some of our main list. Contin and O'Reilley should be getting games in the 1s now, but get rid of Hislop, Hicks and Westhoff. Miller is a 50/50. Could delist him and sign him up at Coburg, I suppose, but he provides decent structure.

Come on Powelly ? Newy played a really good game on Saturday. Wasn't his fault. He's flying solo mate

Blaming the travel, an unfamiliar venue, maybe even the weather (mild), is a cop-out.
Who from the club has been blaming these factors? ???
exactly no one from the club in fact its been the opposite. lets not forget when the media like our supporters over rated what wins we had and started talking finals the club and some level headed supporters laughed. talk about putting them on a pedestal and then tearing them down when inevitably things go to poo. the media and supporters alike.when it comes to the club when are either ever going to use just a smidge of common sense.
idiot heads like mike sheahan and many of his media sheep mates have much to answer for. how many in the media mike included were saying nope they are bottom 4 and have not beaten to much, have no depth and as soon as a few injuries occur they wont cope. na it was the opposite. they fuelled the fire talked us up and as soon as things went wrong they open the dam gates to douse out the flames. so called footy experts my arse, incompetent sheep the lot of em shown up for exactly what they are charlotans..

David King was saying we were a sure thing for the 8 if I remember correctly. :lol

LOL - its really funny, did anyone notice that some of your esteemed posters don't post until we lose and especially post when we lose when we were expected to win. I believe it is called taking the pee , they take a great deal of joy out of getting you in.
Its destructive because the club has had knee jerk reactions and changed the plan to short term fixes but it make you sick as we were all starting to build some belief.
We need to stick to the plan and it is time to start the process of seeing who wants to bleed for the jumper. Its not about getting possesions (we had 50 more possesions on Saturday) but about tackling in numbers and getting the hard ball.
-
We need to stick to the plan and it is time to start the process of seeing who wants to bleed for the jumper.
Trouble is we're not seeing many who really do want to bleed for the jumper, and that's what gets us upset.

Pav and Sandy played
Bellantine did his Hammy during the game.
They had 2 on bench in last Q

They all played ;)

Sorry Blacky I thought he was poor, he's close to our best kick and in the 3rd when we had the gale he need to boot the thing long he didn't he was a chip; chip chippin ;D bad example that

How many plans over the past 2 decades do you want?
We had the Spud Frawley plan.
Then we had the used car sales plan with money back gaurantee we would make finals within 5 years ( Terry Wallace )
And now we have the Dimma plan than has become to have more right hand turns than you will ever see.
Dimma, quoted, we will never give games gifted to players, oh dear.

I can handle the pledges on finding good kicks and not gifting games, what I am disappoints me is the pledge at the b&f at the end of 2009 that each player will "put their over the ball when it is their turn". The lack of this one irks me because that is effort and intensity not having a bad day.
-
yes, forget about the head over the ball pledge. ::)
well thats completely disappeared :banghead
