Richmond defender David Gourdis has been suspended for five matches by the VFL tribunal on two charges arising from last Saturday’s Coburg-Geelong game at Skilled Stadium.

Gourdis, who played full-back for Coburg on experienced Geelong forward Cameron Mooney, was charged with making an obsence gesture to the field umpire and then making contact with the same umpire.

The incident occurred in the last quarter of the match after a free kick was awarded against Gourdis to Mooney.

A frustrated Gourdis subsequently made the gesture to the umpire, who responded by awarding a 50-metre penalty against him.  As Gourdis was running back to stand the mark, he made contact with the umpire.

The VFL tribunal, which sat on Tuesday night, heard character evidence for Gourdis from Richmond’s Football Operations Manager Ross Mongahan and the Club’s psychologist Kim Stephens.

“Once David viewed the footage he realised the seriousness of the charge, and that he’d done the wrong thing, so he pleaded guilty,” Monaghan said.

“The tribunal took everything into account, but still considered the charges serious enough to suspend David for a significant amount of time.”

Richmond considered appealing the suspension, but after examining all the facts, decided against it.

Season over

Career? I think you will find he is contracted for next season. Remember he was promoted to the senior list from the rookie list at the end of last season and I think they have to be given 2 year deals (happy to stand corrected on that)

If that's the case unless he is traded he stays. Unless of course they are prepared to pay out his contract and de-list

Can stay another year if he continues to bring Jessie Habermann to the B&F nights

Charged with making contact with an umpire ? Well if he wasn't suspended then he comes straight into the seniors coz at least he made contact with someone. That's more than any of the players in the senior team managed last week

I like his attitude and certainly of the build we are screaming out for, would definately keep for a year or 2 more.

Up to two years CUB? He had better get his skates on next year.

Only 22 in his second year, a lot of players spend 2 or more years at VFL level before cracking it.

It's his 4th year CUB

Drafted in 2008 in the pre-season, delisted and then roookied for 2009 & 2010, promoted to senior list this year

In his first 3 years he's played only 3 games

Given our lack of key backs he really should hjave played more this season IMO

Agree he should have but that's the coaches decision, not his. He was getting best ons at Coburg and they still wouldn't put him in yet they gifted games to Astbury. Played one game and got dropped the next week. Great chance for him to show his stuff...

When was the last time Thursfield or McGuane were in the bests at any level? Talk about gifting games.

Gourdis has been a bit stiff. Suspension aint going to make it any easier  :lol

Don't laugh, I remember McGuane at Broady, he played CHF like Wayne Carey, only with a heap less ability,

On Gourdis he is a good size, is quick, but the boy can't kick and that is death these days.

If not contracted he should be let go, doesnt have the mental strength to make it.

As he showed last week, was good last year and has played some good games this year but really struggled to back it up in the first half of this season after looking ok last year.

Would rather try someone else. Still make a lot of silly decisions, is a good mark and can spoil ok but his decision making isnt up to AFL standard.
