Seeing as Newman maybe out for the year and we have a stand in for the rest of 2011.
A chance that a young captain may replace Newman for 2012.
Whats everyones thoughts of the whole Captain of Richmond wears number 17.
I love the history and significance of it but, I'm not really sold on the whole idea of changing numbers just cause your captain.
I'd like Cotchin to take the captaincy next year, Newman to stay in number 17 and give number 1 to young player that deserves it. Maybe Conca.

I love it Pope. We started the trend and ours is a significant link to our heritage, something that can help set us apart from many other clubs. Might not ever win us a game or change the course of our history but it is another piece of the unique jigsaw puzzle that comes with supporting Richmond.

I like the idea of 17 being kept for captains! Its a great way to honour Jack!
I wonder if we ever see a captain/ captain coach emulate jack and have his number kept aside for something special? Not likley!
-
I love the fact we keep the number 17 for Jack. Only problem is that the guys who have worn it since we went down that path haven't been worthy of wearing it.
Luke Hodge is the only current AFL captain who I can honestly say would be perfect to wear Jack's number.

Yep might not win us anything of note but yes it is so unique Smokey. :thumbsup

I agree with The Pope. Reckon it's bullshoit.
Good for marketing though. Hard to get those numbers off. Every kid with Cotch's number 9 on their back will have to buy a new jumper.
-
it's not rubbish at all, it's about honour and priveledge. Just imagine what goes with wearing such a revered guernsey, without tradition, a football club has NOTHING, NOTHING at all.

Dyer is a legend but 1 player or number dont make a club & never will. You cannot name everything after one player or only have 1 statue around that honors a great club. l have huge respect for the Dyer family but IMV, l like to see the captain wear any number & create new history. Dyer will never be forgotten regardless but other great players have pulled us to games.
Just need the club to stop living in the past & create new history.

Spot on ! What did number 18 ever mean to North before Carey ? What did number 5 mean to Essendon before Stanton ? ;D
Unecessary pressure on number 17 and make your own legacy

I am not a fan of our Captain in the No.17.
No disrespect to the greatest Tiger Jack Dyer, but having a Captain play in his own number (ie: Cotchin No.9) would mean more to that player.

what a load of rubbish, Melbourne was named after a person wasn't it...there's a precedent for ya...wouldn't have been the last town named after a person either that's debunked your ridiculous theory

I think we should revert to the old system where the captain can just retain his old number. I understand the need to respect Jack Dyer but Jack will always be remembered. He is an icon of the club, has a statue out the front, but truth is we dont really need captains to wear 17 to show respect. Its time to let go of this policy and just revert to the old system. Cotchin who will be the next captain should be allowed to retain his number IMHO.
-
dont disrespect a tradition of the RFC, it gives the captains title some real and tangible meaning when that is translated into the No 17 jumper. who cares what number they used to be...it's not about them :shh
-
Its only been a tradition the last few years.

I bought Paul Brodericks guernsey a few years ago signed by the team. Number 17.
Was he the last non captain to wear number 17?? (in recent years)

Broderick retired in '01 after the Prelim Final and Campbell was the first captain to wear #17 in 2004. Paul Hudson wore it in '02, not sure who it was in '03 MOL.
