don't we have a spare pick from last year in the 30s?

As mentioned on other threads we have the compensation pick we rec'd in the Tambling trade that we have elected not use this year

We're not using this year that end of first round compo pick we got for trading Tambling. Using it this year would make it a pick 30 draft selection. It's better off holding off until next year when it'll become a top 20 pick. We can use the compo pick in any of the drafts up to 2014 but we need to say which draft it is prior to the season of the year we want to use it.

I reckon using that pick this year might have allowed us to trade for a ruckman while keeping pick 1. Hope we don't lose our first pick and still get a ruck. Wonder what would Freo want for Z Clarke

The pick will be worth more next year. It's expected to be a stronger draft so a top 20 pick will be valuable to have; alternatively being pick 20 it'll be worth more at the trade table.

I won't be happy if we don't gain a midfielder with pick 10 and a high jumping ruckman in his early 20's from another club from the draft. Wonder what midfielder and ruckman we're most likely after  :P

Dom Tyson would be a good get as a midfielder but he may not still be around at pick 10. Mitchell Grigg is probably next up around our first pick (another 6fter though at 183cm and 81kg). Grigg has the reputation of an elite left foot kick and is an inside mid. Hardwick may like/want a leftie given his Hawthorn coaching background.

If we could hold off another year we could pick and choose a top quality ruckman under free agency. We could also this year target another ruckman in a state league late in the draft (we have Derickx to come back from injury as well). Us supporters are going to have to tolerate more pain in 2012 so no point throwing away a top pick just to get a ruckman next year when we'll still struggle onfield. Next year's draft we could have say picks 5, 20, 25, 38, 56, etc plus target a quality ruckman free agent. Nail most of them (apparently it's going to be a stronger draft than this year) and our list management could be back on track.

Priority??? why would Port get a priority?

Less than 4 wins in one season gets you an end of round 1 priority pick. Port has won only two games this year. Brisbane and Gold Coast could also potentially receive one.

Here's an early mock draft from one of the blokes on BF who does one each year. It gives a guide on who is available this year.

Nope. West Coast received one last year (pick #26) for finishing with just 4 wins. They used it to select Jack Darling.

We're a good chance for pick 10. I hope we don't take a skinny midfielder. Really need a ready built player

Totally agree. The kid should be at least 6'2 and have a body ready to play senior footy. Must be a safe, ready to play pick. No development type skinny kids. We have far to many kids playing for Coburg.

just because a kid has a ready made body it doesn't mean they will be a good player.

there's an argument that a mature body kid playing against the skinny kids can look better than they are because of the strength advantage. Martin may to contradict this but there are some that say he has very little development left, besides he was also playing against the men already.

All i hope for is for a long term player. I dont care if we have to wait 2-3 years for his body to develop, as long as he has the attributes to make the grade and play 200 games of good footy.

FWIW richo was as skinny as a rake when he arrived at punt rd. nothing like the barrel chested machine he developed into.

Surely there will be a quality midfielder at pick 10 who at least 6'0" and 80kg. Wouldn't want a 6'0" and 68kg player who'd take years to get to afl standard size

Are people forgetting that we may need to spend this pick if we are any hope of getting a half decent ruckman. At the least we may have to downgrade this pick to the late teens to get anything.

I am 100% prepared to spend this pick outright to get a ruckman, our moratorium on trading picks should end imo, a ruck is our No.1 priority, personally I just cannot put up with it any longer, I don't know how much longer our inside mids will put up with it either, I'm a bit worried about what might happen to them if we don't get them some decent supply soon, I hope the powers that be at rfc are thinking the same way.

Thanks captain obvious!...  :thumbsup

I think our point was, if for example we had a choice between Swallow or Bennell from last years draft, regardless of who might have developed more so than another may be able to- we choose Swallow.
I hope that makes sense to you.

So you would give up our first pick for the Freeo's Zac Clarke?
Maybe for the Brisbane Clarke i would but other than that.....
I think our second pick should be our limit, would personally go after Griffen from Freeo, and i think a second pick may get him considering Free used pick 61 to get him from Adelaide. I know he said he was homesick but meybe he just want out of Adelaide! Throw heaps of money at him and first ruck postion and i recon he would have to consider it.
Also don't mind Marich from Adelaide or Hampson from Carlton or West from Geelong.

PP's are now at the end of the first round as opposed to being before the 1st round

I've barely seen them play so i cant really say, but I'm more than happy with conca.
I'd take him in front of martin right now.

If the club took another of his build with his attributes with the first pick I wouldn't complain.

Natural footballers make up for any lack of size or even leg speed, with change left over.

All things being equal you take the bigger body, yeah, but i reakon it should be the last criteria used to filter down the choices, unless you have a single obvious weakness in your list.

Exactly want a kid that has size like Nigel Lappin not Cory Bell or Scott Bamford if that player is the best available player on offer. :thumbsup

I am also of the thought a KPP or Ruckman if available should be drafted also. I am as worried about the mids as I am of the Ruck or another tall KPP defender of good size and weight.

Zac Clarke, swap first round picks with Freo, if not then yes trade the pick, it might be a pick 12 btw. Should aim for a similar deal on Hamish McIntosh if they wouldn't take a Foley + for him.

If we get a Griffin for a 2nd pick i wouldn't be that upset but how long has he got and can he win clean taps, I just can't remember him being a very good sharker of the ball

With the Crows beating Brisbane it's more than likely now we'll finish up 14th and with pick 10. We can't finish lower than 14th as we're 2.5 wins ahead of Bris, GC and Port while Adelaide should beat us over at Footy Park to stay ahead of us on the ladder.
