Title: Captain Cotchin
Post by: one-eyed on August 03, 2011, 10:39:12 AM
Young gun midfielder Trent Cotchin will captain Richmond in Sunday’s Round 20 clash with the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco in the absence of regular skipper, Chris Newman, who has been sidelined with a knee injury.

It will be the second time Cotchin has captained the Tigers.

I think Newman should step down next year and for the longivity of the club Cotchin needs to be appointed. We now need to appoint a 10+ year Captain of the club instead of 3-5 year Captains as has been our trend in the past. I can't remember our last Captain that served more than 5 years....I am sure the stats people on the forum will assist.. :thumbsup

When new players come into our club they need to look at our Captain and say, I want to be like hinm, I want to train like him, I want to lead like him. Look at what Judd has done since walking in the door at the Blues. Players like Murphy were in awe of the way he goes about his his business from the time he leaves his house for training until after a game. The Blues have lifted another 40-60% since Judd arrived.

The Flea was 5 years WAT - '88 to '92.  More than 5 years was Des Rowe '52 to '57.

good to see cotch lead the team out, hopefully this ushers in a NEW era, where disgraceful performances are no longer lauded & accepted amongst the playing group. id like to see the leadership group spilt over summer with a couple of suprises in store. EG

Cotch captain
Rance vice captain

That is all, no namby pamby leadership group to placate those poor darlings that couldnt get a gig. As MJ once said..THIS IS IT :gotigers

Thanks smoke......gee that was a while ago....look at the other clubs, we need a 10 year captain for stability.

is this some sort of "policy" or just a sign that even when we were successful there was still an element of self harm about the club?

From Mark Robinson's 'The Tackle'....

9. Trent Cotchin

Interim captaincy has not altered his game, and when he intercepted a kick-in and kicked the goal fom 50m in the last quarter to send his team ahead 105-87, the question was asked: Should he be the captain in 2012? It's a popular topic when you consider potential captains such as Joel Selwood and Jack Grimes at their respective clubs, and Cotchin certainly has joined them. But let's not rush. Chris Newman is 29. Trent Cotchin is 21. Let the kid think about playing and not think about sponsors, speeches, the media and other associated responsibilities.

From all reports Cotchin is 21 going on 29. Got a good head on his shoulders.

Would love to see him captain in 2012.

With the exception of GC and Port, our backline is the worst in the comp. I'm pretty sure Chris Newman will face no selection issues next year.

As for the captaincy, age should not be an issue. From what I have observed, on and off the field, Cotchin is an outstanding leader in all areas, he should be up for serious consideration, imo if they have decided to give him the job in 2013 then why not do it now.

Plenty of depth in our backline. Just ask Rance, grimes, houli, lids, batch, Conca, Newman, thirsty...

SKIPPER COTCH

Trent Cotchin will be Richmond's captain, but not just yet.

The clamour to get him into the captaincy next year has become deafening, but within Richmond they are aware there is no rush.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick compared current captain Chris Newman to former Hawks skipper Richie Vandenberg this week.

In other words, hugely rated internally even if others externally aren't aware of his importance.

It means he is considered certain to keep the captaincy next year while Cotchin, still just 21, concentrates on his football.
