Title: The Dean Polo lesson
Post by: Fruity Morgan on August 12, 2011, 09:41:10 PM
So what does Dean Polo's season teach us?

He played crap footy for us for several years.  When dropped to Coburg he struggled.  Didn't look like a league footballer.

Goes off to the Saints, who have played in the last three grand finals and who have been up in the top sides for years.

Plays good, solid consistent football, and despite their poor start to the season has been more than serviceable. Holds his spot when they are motoring along.

So is he being better coached, better trained?  Is the Saints culture better(surely not)  Do the better players around him help?

Is he poo like we thought or is a handy player?

And what does this tell us about our club?

Havent watched much of tonights game. I seen him take a mark and a shot at goal from about 40 and didn't make the distance early in the 1st quarter. I would say Schulz has showed more then Polo since leaving.

Schultz....good point.  How do u reckon he would have gone if we had stuck him at FF after Richo retired?

Don't bring Sarge into this. Will give my thoughts anyway :lol should have been given 5 games at full forward in 09 after Richo got hurt. If he did well then cool. If not, drop to Coburg and trade at years end. Wallet prefered to have him play as a utility and he got all kinds of poo thrown at him from our supporters for not kicking enough goals. His development here was pathetic and Schulz also wasn't consistent enough himself.
09 was just a dirty, dirty year for everyone. he needed a change as did polo

I think we have stuffed up a couple of times with our young blokes. The way we have developed our players in the last 20 years has been rubbish. Our coaches have had NFI and we've suffered because of it. Wallace and Frawley couldn't help develop the local under 11s let alone an AFL side

100% correct.

We turn key good players into utilities when clearly they are not. WTF is the go with that. Tambling, Edwards, Polo, etc etc. I know hardly household names but its strange how we develop these guys and its the main reason why i dont want Trengrove. We will throw him around everywhere and he will end up being another Schulz.

Polo kicked 3 goals and what did we do as a result. Rarely leave him in the forward line again for 2 consecutive games.

Our development strike rate is rubbish. More of our players go backwards

We have in the past had very poor development of our list.  I think in the past two years this has definitely changed.  Some of these guys would probably flourish under the current regime.

that's very true. the form of some of our duds has been pretty good.  Sarge, Rodan and Polo for starters.

on the other hand, there's Tambling and Collins.

Tambling played at Sturt last week with another one of our ex gun recruits Adam Thomson.
Tambling playing there again this week, reports were he was ordinary, didnt ask how Thomson went

Chook is average, even at the Saints

Serial fader and teammates just dont want to use him regularly for whatever reason

Also drinks out of pink straws and eats at Luke McGuane's table
