Last time it was meant to coincide and be a sneak peak before the release of the FTF but they went a day early to get maximum exposure in the morning papers. Is the Club about to make an announcement regarding the footy dept?
-
Is Craig Cameron going to be there?
Is Benny Gale going to be there?
Will there be finger food?
-
Is Craig Cameron going to be there? Not last timeIs Benny Gale going to be there? Was there last timeWill there be finger food? And yep also
I'd go but busy
-
Is Craig Cameron going to be there? Presumably if it's about the footy dept.
Is Benny Gale going to be there? As CUB said Benny was there last time and spoke at length.
Will there be finger food? IIRC they had beer and soft drinks in a tub of ice as well as sandwiches on the table last time.
-
Would love to have Craig Cameron there. Will love to ask him some searching questions on recruiting and list management. As I am sure many would. :thumbsup

Each person going has been give a special ticket to get entry into Punt Rd so perhaps what is going to be discussed isn't for public consumption yet :-X. We didn't have to have a ticket last time.

It is is about recruiting and our plans for the draft then they are likely to say it isn't for public consumption
We'll wait and see who can follow the request ;D

You dont have to bring the ticket, I just wanted to manage the database more efficiently this time.
-
Would have liked to have gone again but had other committments :banghead Is it as exclusive (ie approx. 20 people only) this time?

Okay thanks for the clarification RFCO. I was just wondering as the email said "print and bring this ticket with you".

Details please ;D
Craig Cameron was the speaker and gave a slide presentation of the football dept. and where it's at and where it wants to go.
2010/2011 was about transformation. In 2009 the club had sacked its coach and had an old and overpaid list thanks to finishing 9th in 2008 and the Club at the time believing we'd do well in 2009. As it turned out we weren't good enough. That all needed to change. We cut the TPP down to 92.5% and have brought in 25 players in the past two years. We wanted to get a collective 500 games into our 22 and under players - we've achieved 600 games into them.
From 2012 onwards it's about winning and players will have to earn their spot rather than playing players to get games into them.
Players who have improved:
Cotchin - been able to have preseason and that's made a big difference. He'll improve again with another full preseason next year.
Martin - a good debut year but he's improved again. Will finish high again in our B&F.
Vickery - 35 goals. Rare to see a 200cm bloke with his agility.
Rance - made a number of people eat their words
Grimes - showed when he played he has what it takes.
Added Depth:
Houli
Grigg
Miller - knows when Griffiths is right to play Ben will play ahead of Brad. Ben still had issues with his shoulder this year.
Astbury put on 9kgs this year but it was probably too much weight as it took away some of his agility.
* Punt Road Oval redevelopment will start in July-August next year in readiness for 2012-13 preseason. Delay due to drainage issues.
* Coburg Tigers will continue for the next 3 years at least. There was more about Coburg but Craig said it's sensitive info and not to mention it on the forums. He did say he would love VFL games at Punt Road but AFL Victoria controls the schedule. We did talk to the AFL apparently about having a curtainraiser on the 'G for two games so it would be great if it was feasible a curtainraiser at Punt Road.
* We rate every player in the comp. on a scale out of a 1000 with 500 being a player who can play AFL regularly. We then rate the junior draftees on the same scale and put them in draft order. So if there's a scenario where we are determining the cost (draft pick wise) of an opposition player Blair Hartley says we should consider, then we weigh up the opposition player of interest against the junior footballer at the pick we'd consider trading. If the former is rated higher then the trade is most likely to go ahead. This provides some 'science' to the process of trading and drafting rather than just blindly chasing say any full-back because we need one. It's for this reason we believe we are well prepared for the upcoming trade/drafts and free agency.
* The mistakes of the past were done because we did things blindly. He mentioned we had no list manager nor a full-time recruiter in 2004-5 so there was no one to determine if for example the strength and depth of the 2004 draft and then whether it was worth trading Ottens for two late first round picks.
* 2012 trade period will go for 3 weeks :gobdrop thanks to free agency.
There's more but I'll post this for now.

Good to see you were there BJ. :thumbsup
It was me who asked about whether Craig Cameron has the final say on player recruiting and contract negotiations.
Yeah met MT and Tony_Montana and had a good chin wag about lots of things RFC. :thumbsup
All in all I was impressed and do actually feel that we are heading somewhere. I thought the presentation
was very imformative.

was that you who asked that Q MT :lol...Not sure what answer you were expecting, twas me who asked how the dogs and saints had managed relative success without abundant resource
I got a better answer in private afterwards :yep.
That was a good question by the way bj :thumbsup. Craig answered by saying the Saints and Dogs had a couple of good drafts which got them to the finals but he's seen at other clubs the mentality that near enough was pretty good and they didn't have the resources to make the tough decisions necessary and kept hold onto these players for too long. When these play fell off the cliff then the club went with it.
-
So did you plead with CC not to keep Brad Miller ;) ;D
:rollin
I was hesistant asking any further critical questions after the tanking one :lol.

Plus St Kilda and the Dogs are bottom four spenders in terms of footy department expenditure.

Just being serious about Miller - they haven't talked to Brad yet about playing on next year. They'll listen to whether Miller wants to first.

yeah I thought it was quite a good answer MT, prob fair to say sainters and dogs run has began to fray at the edges before they actually saluted. That said , the few people both those clubs have had in the critical footy roles have clearly been a better quality than ours over the journey but he wasn't going to admit to that, and he did pre-empt his answer by saying he didnt want to disrespect those that trod before him
-
Ive met BJ a few times now and was good to meet Tucker, MT and Peter from BF.
I wont repeat what others have already said about the presentation.
Pretty much went over a lot of what we all know and have a fair idea about no secret inside info :) just confirmed a few things such as complete setup of a footy department that was pretty much non existant a few short years ago. The recruiting department, development coaches, strength and conditioning, starting to explore sports science more in depth now bc its not just a pipedream we are starting to get into a position where we can action these areas whereas 5 years ago we werent even in the same stratosphere.
Still got a long way to go to match it with the heavyweights of the competition when it comes to resources - very much income driven (obviously) so dont expect to keep amping up our footy department spend to catch the pies, eagles, hawks and crows unless we increase our revenue streams. Important thing is we are now "in the game". Puts it into perspective. The clubs coming from way back and can now definitively say we have the building blocks in place. If we create success over the next few years it will have a snowball effect and allow our footy department to grow and improve et al.
Im a pretty cynical type, dont buy much from the club, but hearing CC I have more tolerance and understanding ;D. Sometimes (and i am guilty of this) we think everything is black and white and forget there is a shedload of grey in this industry. These guys arent stupid and know they arent perfect, but they sound like they have a plan and are very driven by it.
Reading between the lines - we are still miles away when it comes to recruiting resources but small steps and patience required. We're on the right track.
MT was pretty tenacious with the tanking question, before I knew it was MT i told him i loved his question :lol would love to know what you guys said 1 on 1 afterwards.

* Another thing Craig said is we are dropping Leading Teams as the peer reviewing process is difficult with a young group as they don't know much about leadership yet to get much out it. We plan to come up with our own leadership process that's more suited to where our young group is now and then may return to Leading Teams in the future when we have a more mature group.
* As for roles within the footy department - Cameron is the general manager of football so his role is to manage all the various arms of the footy dept - coaches, recruiting, list management, rehab, strength and conditioning. I think they were the 5 areas. The rehab and strength and conditioning areas have been split between two people and Matt Hornsby oversees both areas. The list management committee is made up of Cameron, Jackson, Hartley, Hardwick, Gale and Stahl (to keep an eye on finances). Dimma has a fair bit of input in trades but very little in draft selections. Cameron said they are organising the finances for the next year at the moment.
* We will be getting a seasoned coach to assist Dimma next year. No names mentioned though.
* As far as our international scholarships it's a wait and see if this approach works. Basically it's sponsored so it costs the club nothing (otherwise we wouldn't be doing it). With how is footy played changing rapidly, can someone who hasn't grown up on footy understand and make the right decision to pick his way through the forward press for example.
* This draft is weaker than last and next year's. He didn't want to speak for the recruiters but he expects we will be looking at the state leagues.
* We have to make a decision on our compo pick over the offseason when we are going to use it. We plan to use it in a strong draft which 2012 will be but we want to hear back from our recruiters about the strength of 2013 based on how they viewed U16 level this and last year.
* Craig mentioned the U17 players and GWS. We can't be sure what GWS will do yet in terms of how many kids they will offer in the U17 mini-draft or if they will want to keep hold of which kids.
* We film every training session and first and second year players get all their training recorded and analysed with a view to self-analysis and development. We also use it the vision when reviewing each player's year. For example we can compare how a player is performing now and go back a see from preseason training vision earlier in the year how they performed then and whether they have improved - skills, understanding of the gameplan and structures, etc ...

A couple of good drafts...
Refers back to tanking question. If the draft doesn't bat deep this year, why aren't we looking to get the highest pick we can?

great reports, if you know what i mean ;) ;) ;)

Yep the Saints and Dogs benefitted from priority picks. Riewoldt, Ball, Cooney and Griffen were PPs.
Craig's view was the transformation period is over and it's time for the Club to now start winning and build momentum through winning. My view is that's all well and good but accessing more of the high end draft talent and adding it to the side will result in winning and more importantly eventually winning over the top sides. Beating crap sides like North in round 24 when there's nothing on the line except pride is nothing to hang your hat on when we've been uncompetitive witches hats against the top sides.
-
Thaanks guys for the report.Any mention of Troy Taylor what's going on??.
Nope. I was walking back to the station afterwards when I wished I had asked about Taylor. There was so much info presented on the night that I completely forgot about it and no one else asked about Troy either.
-
Amazing how people think Craig Cameron is the new messiah ..lol.someone should of asked him some really hard questions.eg.why sign Luke McGaune on a 3 year contract at 450k a year. And why sign Jake King on a 2 year deal?
-

I don'think there was any need to ask..seeing he hasn't come back and alot of people have spent considerable time talking to him, mentoring him ..... time to move on that is either move him on (trade) or de-list
Troy's loss not ours

Sorry Jack but this another one of your "cheap shots from the cheap seats"
You had the opportunity to go & ask the "hard questions" but you chose not too
You can't have it both ways
-
Already asked them that question 2 months ago and got some dribble response about not losing him to Gold Coast Suns at the time .please spare me supporters forums

Went to a supporters forum when the late Alan Jeans was coach and got thrown out by Brian Waldron for asking some too hard to answer questions.one related to Ty Elser drinking cans of beer after the reserves game while the seniors played.lol I question was this the right winning culture ? Brian politely said.please leave.lol
-
haha good onya Jack :lol...seriously it was a good forum that underlined where we've come from to where we are now...luke McGuane is the least of our worries right now

winning people over with your warm affable personality as usual? Getting information is like sex Jack, you start off with some foreplay, ie polite banter, then you ease into the question and then if you did all that right you might get a payoff in the form of an honest answer. Your brutal rape approach is only gonna get met with indignity.
-
* We will be getting a seasoned coach to assist Dimma next year. No names mentioned though.
Eade, Craig, Malthouse.... hmmm

Neil Craig would bring his sports science knowledge to the Club if he decided to come to Punt Rd.
I guess the range of choice depends on who is considered an experienced coach. I mean Knighter could be classed as experienced yet most people would see his time as coach of Essendon as a failure. Ayres is experienced but it's been probably 5 years since he's been in the AFL system despite his success at Port Melbourne in the VFL. Even with those mentioned who were in the AFL system this year, they haven't achieved premiership success as a coach apart from Malthouse and he won't be coaching next year if he leaves Collingwood.
-
By the way a couple of things from the night that I've just remembered:
* The Club especially last year under a new coach with a young list just wanted to concentrate on how we played rather than what the opposition did. So we focussed on new gameplan, our skills, structures, etc. The focus has slowly changed to opposition analysis this year which is why Cambo's got the opposition analyst gig. His sole role now is to report on what's happening at opposition we are playing next and how they are playing and then on matchday report to the coaches in the box about whether the opposition is playing as we planned or are they doing things differently. Now that we are heading out of the "transition" stage and into "winning mode" in 2012 and beyond we will focus far more on opposition analysis.
* Even though our TPP is at 92.5% of the salary cap, we've already started front-loading contracts to free up space in our salary cap and hence money available for when free agency comes in next year.
* We want to free up picks (translated = spots on our list) for next year's draft.
* The Club is fairly confident that although Lids is coming out of contract next year (GWS can chase uncontracted next year as well), we feel that we will have an environment and a up and coming side that Lids will want to be apart of. As mentioned earlier the Club sees Lids as one of our leaders.
* Cameron also mentioned when we were 0-9 last year we were being classed at the worst side in history yet since then we have won 14 from 34 games which is just under a half. So we are improving.
-
If Port Melbourne continues to go through the season undefeated and wins VFL finals by 100 points at least one AFL clubs will be interested in Ayres.
