Port Adelaide's John Butcher likely to re-sign but Carlton interested

    Mark Robinson

    August 30, 2011

CARLTON is preparing to launch for Port Adelaide's young star John Butcher - and they had better be quick.

Butcher's manager Paul Connors will fly to Adelaide to meet Butcher and Power officials.

Butcher is expected to re-sign with the South Australian club, but forces from Victoria are attempting to change his mind.

The Blues, North Melbourne, Melbourne and Richmond have indicated interest in the 20 year old.

Butcher's father, Wayne, would also love his son to play closer to home, although "it will be his decision", Wayne Butcher told the Herald Sun.

Butcher has exploded on to the AFL scene, kicking 10 goals in his past two games, and drawing huge accolades for his marking.

Connors said interest was strong.

"He's kicked 10 goals in two weeks and the phone's been busy," Connors said.

"I'm flying to Adelaide and will have discussions with John and Port Adelaide but at this stage, we won't be having any formal negotiations until the end of the season."

Wayne Butcher said the family would sit down next week and discuss all options.

"To tell you the truth, we've not spoken about it," Wayne said.

"We decided to leave it until the end of year, a month ago, when he looked like playing a couple of games of footy, that hopefully we'd let his footy doing his talking.

"Of course, his parents would like their son to play where we could watch all the time."

He said his son was in the same position as other draftees forced to move interstate. "A lot of kids at all clubs have been torn between families, their home state and mates playing footy."

The Blues did not want to comment.

The Tigers, Roos and Demons are monitoring the situation.

The Tigers have a close connection to Butcher through their list manager Blair Hartley, who was Port's recruiting manager when Butcher was drafted.

Port remains confident he will re-sign and believe the announcement last week of Jackson Trengove staying adds to their case.

Would be keen but his kicking depite him being quite accurate so far looks sooooo bad. Not sure what it will cost.

We have Griffiths for now. I'm more interested in these rumours that Andrew Gaff wants out of the West Coast.

I think Butcher will resign. Can't see him walking out after a bad luck of injury and finally getting a few games.

I grew up in Maffra and keep in touch with family and friends regularly.

I heard Carlton had offered a 5 year deal.  :shh Not sure how true it was, but it was just before this article came out.

a flawed kicking technique will NEVER stand up any genuine pressure believe you me...is alright kicking them from anywhere when the season was shot weeks ago and the teams 10 goals down before he gets his first touch for the day...cant wait to see him kick one when the team depends on it...If he'd a good kick, ive got a golf swing like Tiger woods :lol

I have seen Butcher play and he is a effing stuff. Name another 19 year old that has come in and taken the marks he's taken and kicked the goals he's kicked? Oh, and in one of the worst sides in history too. Butch can play

Saw Richo kick 7 of the best at Waverley in Round 22 1993 against St Kilda. We were marginally better than Port that year.

If Butcher is even half a chance to leave Port, we should throw the kitchen sink at him..... And the oven..... and whatever else it takes to get this kid to the club. Will be a star! The Tigers need to land a big fish and IMO this boy will be a prized catch.
Get him, Griffen from Freeo, Neil Craig, that Jaygar 17yo kid and some young midfielders from the draft and somebody will have done there job!
This club needs to make something special happen in the next couple of months!
Show some freekin balls tigers and get the job done!
IT'S TIME FOR CHANGE, WE HAVE BEEN PATHETIC FOR LONG ENOUGH!!!!!!!  :gotigers

Dont think you know what your talking about. Butcher can kick a ball very well. Lad is gifted footballer who can play Ruck, Forward or a running backman. Take another look at his goals & where he has kicked them.

Butcher tells Port he wants to come to us and to get a deal done- We give our first rounder this year and say Edwards

Griffin for a pick in the 50 to 60's (he went to Freeo for pick 61 in 2010 and has played very little since then to think he has increased his value in the market place)

Foley and our Tambling pick for O'Meara (throw in Post if need be)

Wasn't really that hard

Pretty simple, Judd is not worried bout what they pay him, he is employed by Visy, and with the AFL's blessing, noone else is allowed to do this mind you.
