Contract talks for Tuck

September 1, 2011

THE oft-debated future of veteran Shane Tuck at Richmond has taken a positive turn with the Tigers opening negotiations with the 29-year-old for a new one-year contract.

Richmond football boss Craig Cameron confirmed last night he had moved to re-sign Tuck after the defender had become out of contract by failing to play the required senior games to automatically remain at the club next season.

Tuck, who had been on the trade table in the past at Tigerland, had been widely tipped for a delisting at the end of 2011, given his lengthy mid-season period playing for Coburg. His contract with Richmond specified he play 16 senior games this season to automatically remain with the Tigers for 2012.

However, Tuck returned to the senior side for the clash with Geelong at Skilled Stadium in round 18 and has been among the Tigers' best for most games since then. In the recent words of coach Damien Hardwick: ''He's doing everything right.''

Before his 2011 fall from grace - and widely debated absence from the senior side - Tuck finished fifth in Richmond's Jack Dyer Medal last season, his fourth top-five finish since 2005.

Cameron said he had opened negotiations two days ago with Tuck's manager, Liam Pickering.

Tucky will probably go through the same thing next year playing at Coburg and then only coming in when younger bodies need a rest.

Certainly can see that happening but he obviously wants to stay so it's a win/win

Though makes you wonder who's gonna get the stuff now  :-\

One most us had down as a certainty 4-6 weeks ago looks like staying.

yep he'll come in, dominate and leave everyone wondering why the eff he wasn't in the side in the first place. Then Craig Cameron signs him up again for more of the same in 2013 ;D

Is obviously still good enough, so it's a sensible decision. Doesn't mean he'll play ones all year next season but he will be one of the better depth players about

This is so true.

Why the hell keep him if your not really going to play him?  He is old and while I like him, its stupid to keep him unless he is a regular in the senior side and you think you will play him a lot.  Given they obviously don't think he is a good fit for the senior side, then he ought to go.

To keep him is a decision, which shows a lack of faith in the recruiting and development departments and doesn't allow for the natural progression and development of the list.  Maybe they want to keep him as a clubman and an example of great training but I would have thought there are enough other senior players that could be good examples, Foley Reiwoldt etc.
