Title: Angus Graham Appreciation Thread
Post by: Coach on September 08, 2011, 02:16:11 PM
Post your favourite Gus bits in here  :bow :cheers

To be honest, until recently I hated this guy. Now I love him. We need to keep him on the list until he's ready to retire. Just keep him around the club....he's a bloody legend. Long live Beefcake  :bow

Come on guys, post your thoughts on Gus. Just go all in

I loved it when he dropped a simple chest mark in the centre of the G in the final quarter against St Kilda in Round 2. The spillage caused the ball to fall into St Kilda hands and resulted in the penalised McGuane rushed behind.
Only Gus could cause a clanger like that that would unlock a sequence of events that we still feel aggrieved about to this very day.
Just go all in. :lol :rollin :lol

He collapsed into a heap in the middle of the ground and lay motionless. I thought he'd been KO'ed or had done both knees at the same time.  :lol

Maybe all he needs is a decent haircut. Always looks like he's just gotten out of bed. Or maybe he suffers from some undiagnosed sleepwalking disorder. Or he went to a Peter Powers hypnotic show and at the end of the night they just plumb forgot to do the "321, you're back in the room."

Please share your Gus memories.

Hope this meets with your approval Davey  ;D

Heard this story while watching Coburg a few years ago

A few years back when young Angus was still a rookie he had over the pre-season done some serious pumping of the old weights. This resulted in some new muscle definition in the arms, across the shoulders and around the pecs & abs which young Angus was very proud of  ;D

Being a rookie young Angus had to ply his trade down at Coburg. At Coburg when they hand out jumpers they give the bigger sized jumpers to the bigger blokes. In the case of young Angus this meant he was given a very loosely fitting jumper to wear

This did not sit well with young Angus as it would not allow him to show off his new muscles.

Angus asked for a smaller jumper (read tighter) jumper. When he was told NO, Angus came up with a plan

He took his jumper home and went off to a "seamstress" and had his jumper altered by having it taken in at the sides to create a much smaller size.

First game young Angus had his tight jumper that enable him to strut around the field and show off  his muscles.... unfortunately there was one small problem after running around a bit and having to "suck in some deep ones" young Angus found that his requested alterations had made the jumper a way bit too tight thus making breathing a touch difficult.....

The follwoing week young Angus had re-altered the jumper to make it a tad bit looser by creating a small rip under the arms along the seam  :thumbsup

More inside info from training. Heard from a few sources that there was an incident at training yesterday, just lucky for us Port had their own troubles and the cameras were there to catch it. Yesterday BrownE and Maric were doing some ruck work with Lade for about half an hour. Onlookers were unimpressed with how Maric went about it..."soft", "built like tarzan, plays like Jane" were some of the comments. As they were finishing up The Bake came out to the field and bitch slapped Ivan. "You go all in or you eff off" were the words out of The Bakes mouth. Maric was a bit upset but Bake put her arm around Ivan and said she'd teach Ivan how to ruck.

gotta love Beefcake  :bow

That's the mail guys/gals. Glad I could give you some insight into our training :cheers

I'd have big GUus playing coburg resSies.

With the new rules maric will be our #1 ruck. I think with 3 on the bench will continue to play only onne ruckman at afl level. You need the 2nd ruck to be able to play forward or back ie. Vickery, and u hope post.

Browne and derickx should both be at coburg allowed to devlop. With elton. Post. Vickery. Lending at hand at RFC/coburg grham should be playing 3rd...

Yes. In fairness to him he's better than Renouf and is killing it at VFL. Should get a 3rd rounder or something. He'd be better than Stephenson at Geelong. He's awful.

IMO Clubs that could use him would be: Collingwood, Geelong, GWS (Brogan likely retiring), Hawthorn, Melbourne (if Jamar bails), Port, St.Kilda.

If he is good enough for clubs struggling for a ruck he is good enough as a backup for Maric.
Said it many a time, mental is a big thing in elite sport! Would love to see how he actually goes teamed with Maric with not so much resting on his shoulders. Really interested actually, rotating with Maric and both alternating forward may just be the tonic we need up there.
Maric has such a heart that when he is "resting" forward he gets license to roam as needed. Seems to be everywhere does the Mullet, makes me tired just watching .....

1st ruck  imaric

2nd / 3rd - browne / derickx

4th ruck - draft a 17/18 yoa ruckman. Or two with lack picks / rookies.

This would be best for the list long term. Rather than having imaric graham in similar age bracket. Use pick from guson mid.

if we were to learn from another club i would like us to take a leaf out of wce book and even with them i think they have it wrong.

why wce weell not so long ago 05  they had all of cox gardiner and seaby zach beeck and michael embly on their list.  they had three ruckmen who could play two of them were very good.
injuries have cruelled gardiner and they cut him in at the end of 08. despite having one of the premier ruckmen in the league in cox they went and drafted naitanui that same yr. 4 yrs on naitanui is ready to take over the #1 mantle. cox is also getting on and his time will soon be up so what did they do in preparation for this they went and drafted scott lycett in 2010. when cox is ready to retire lycett will be primed to take over if not the #1 role naitanuis role of the past couple of seasons.  its called a smooth succession and we need to look at going about things this way.
you can bet that this yr they will use rookie picks on a ruckman at least and if none make it when cox does retire they use another decent pick on a good ruckman.

if we are to go the youth path with ruckmen well ivaaan is 26 we need a young ruckman who we are sure is capable of taking over from ivan in our system now.
also because we have no other competetive ruckman on the list we could do with another mature ruckman just to help out.

if it was at all possible and its not because we have other list needs i would want us to take the most promising ruckman we can with  a decent pick. i would like us if possible to find a journeyman ruckman if possible and i would definately like us to rookie one or two.
it goes without saying if we could do this i would not hesitate to cut all of derickx who by the way was worth trying and i would hope we would try similar again, browne who just looks too cumbersome and graham who is as much a waste of space as miller is.

If we were to recruit another mature ruckman from another club it would have to be someone who can play as a forward (or backman, i suppose) as well. You are going to have trouble recruiting a pure ruckman just to play at coburg as a back up

This is why Warnock might be moving, and it is why we got Maric in the first place.

We need to focus on a young ruckman that will be able to step up at an early age (good luck)

we have ty vickery i suppose hes been a little forgotten. thing is i have grave doubts about this bloke always have even last yr. if he could fullfill his potential and find a bit of ticker we may have the answer already there.

again i like the way wce go about it. they have to very good clearance players as well as ruckmen in cox and naitanui. they do not constantly play them forward both spend significant time on the bench resting and one or the other will then be rotated thru the forward line to stretch sides.

imo carlton have it wrong atm with hampson and kruezer.  warnock should be playing first ruck and kruezer performing the forward/ruck role we are  hoping vickery can perform. thing is all 4 cox naitanui, kruezer warnock are superb ruckmen they lose nothing  when they swap or have a rest.

for us an ideal situation would be
f/ vickery ruck/for - griffiths - quality small forward.
hf/ rotating mid say martin/conca - riewoldt - quick quality medium forward.

r/ maric - cotchin - foley

quality young ruckman developing at coburg someone like scott lycett. plus a rookie ruckman maybe two. a lot depends on vickery actually becoming a decent player.

But you said in your last scribble that WCE have it wrong?
well i did say i think we should take a leaf out of their book even though i think they have it wrong. implying they have a part of it wrong. imo they should have a rookie on their list as well. for me 3 is not enough. so i suppose i should have been a bit clearer rather than presume people are capable of not taking everything said literally.

tell me what part of the wce  scenario do you think we should not try to  replicate. big ivan is what 26 27 yrs old  ask yourself how will he be travelling in 4 or 5 yrs time. if we want a replacement for him we should have that replacement in our system right now.  i would hope we would agree most ruckmen take at least 4 yrs to step up into a #1 ruck role.
they had cox at age 26 the best ruckman in the comp and went and used pick 2 on natinui ensuring a very good succession plan.  its not so much the picks but how they went about it. knowing they didnt have cover for injuries they then went and got lycett as well and he too will succeed natainui. smooth transition without going backwards that what we want isnt it.  sheesh we do need someone right now to step up and give maric a hand and right now we need to put ivans replacement into our system.

if you disagree with me why cant you just say i disagree and give a decent reason why rather than the sarcasm. if you disagree you must have a reason why.

as it happens i like what the coasters have done with their rucks but they  could take a project ruckman as well. in this i think they have it wrong. hope that clears it up for you and you can now focus on what has been actually said.

I never mentioned anything about agreeing or not. I was only referring to another Claw diatribe where you first stated they have it wrong, but never actually mentioned what you think it is they have done wrong. Only then to follow it up by saying how good they've done it. Sheesh.

But if it gives you a rise, I was actually hoping we rookied someone like Bolger just to have sitting on the list for a few years. The rookie list is a great place to develop these kinds of positions since they usually take a few years to yield any dividends and at no expense of hoarding a spot on the senior list.

Two very poor opponents? Poppycock. Trengove has been in a squad of 40 for AA and has won a B&F. Westhoff is very good around the ground and he (Gus) murdered Lobbe early on too. For him to hold his own around the ground against Trengove and Westhoff is a great effort in that heat. I expected him to have a heart attack at some point. He dominated the stoppages

Don't recall that but doubt it was for his ruck work. Westhoff is poo in the ruck but good around the ground and Lobbe is just awful. So he should have dominated the stoppages. As much as he gets paid out for a lack of heart he's not completely useless in regards to talent. But you're right that he did well around the ground to hold his own against more mobile players.

Trengove is a bloody ordinary ruck, as is Westhoff. Nothing more than part timers. Would have liked to see Goose up against an actual ruckman as opposed to a CHB and a 3rd tall forward. Still, he gave some good service. If Jacobs or Jenkins goes down he'll get a game.
Title: Re: Angus Graham Appreciation Thread
Post by: Coach on February 18, 2013, 03:48:23 PM
The only reason Trengove is a part time ruck is because he's a good CHB. Doesn't mean he can't play there. Westhoff is weak as pee but they obviously don't chuck him in there for his rucking ability ;D Didn't Lobbe start game two only to get destroyed by Goose?

How many did Benny Gale average in his first 5 years? Poor argument. Trengove is a solid ruckman, he just plays CHB because he's better there and they need him there.

Yep they both aren't ruckmen.

We tried to poach Trengove to be another tall defender for us a couple of years ago. At 197cm which is a fraction too short for a ruckman (he doesn't have a NicNat leap), CHB is his position.

What heights ruckmen were in the past doesn't relate to footy now (Roy Wright was only Jacko's height - 188cm - when he won two Brownlows). Footy has changed so much even over just the past 5 years. 197cm is too short for a full-time ruck now unless you have some incredibly freakish leap. Most full-time rucks these days are 200cm or above and the new rules will only further favour the taller ruckmen. So while I don't rate Gus as a AFL footballer, there is no doubt he is definitely ruckman size at 201cm tall whereas Trengove is not. At best Trengove could do follower roles and throw-ins. No way he is or will be a genuine centrebounce ruckman.

He's a CHB. He was drafted as a ruck that could play KP at either end. Turns out he was a poo ruck and forward but an excellent CHB. Having said that, if he was forced to play and entire game in the centre against Graham, he'd be on top by the end of the day. Too aggressive and competitive to let the turtle triumph.

You're talking about a guy who finished up 50+ years ago. How tall is Stefan Martin? Trengove has played good football in the ruck. You're saying blokes under 200cm can't play in the ruck due to centre bounces. Really. How many centre bounces are there per game? If I were a betting man I would say Jackson has a better leap than most who are taller. At worst he loses the hitout count (but due to his aggressiveness he will make a great contest + win a fair share of his own) but easily beats any beanpole around the ground.  If you only judge ruckman on how many hitouts they win at a centre bounce then you'll miss blokes who are very good around the ground.
