National draft looming small for most clubs
Emma Quayle
October 19, 2011
ANALYSIS
GREATER Western Sydney aside, few clubs are planning to play a significant part in next month's national draft, meaning only around 65 fresh players may come into the system next year.
While Geelong and Fremantle expect to make five or six selections, most clubs are intending to take their minimum three, and some will take just two ''live'' picks, using a rookie upgrade to meet their quota.
St Kilda's draft plan will hinge on how many players the club decides to delist, with the club needing to sort through its salary cap issues in the next few weeks, but the Saints may take five or six picks, too. The trade period left the Saints with six picks inside 70.
Clubs are holding out until next year's draft, with many promoting rookies and making minimal delistings, with the 2012 draft crop already considered highly talented and of great depth.
The Western Bulldogs and Brisbane Lions are planning on four selections as well as rookie upgrades, but the likes of Collingwood, North Melbourne and Richmond will pick just two fresh players and Gold Coast only one.
After dominating last year's draft ahead of their debut season, the Suns will make just one live selection, having committed to local zone players Alex Sexton and Jackson Allen.
The Suns spent the last hour of the trade period trying to ''sell'' their mid-order draft picks so that they could move as far as possible into the first round. After swapping packages of picks with Geelong and Richmond, they finished up with first-round pick No. 24.
Geelong's five selections will include father-son draftee Jed Bews, while Carlton's three picks will include Dylan Buckley.
The number of total selections made could be around 72-75, not including upgraded rookies, so if a handful of delisted players are given a fresh chance, the number of first-time draftees could drop back to the mid to high 60s.
Greater Western Sydney's busy trade period saw it add two more first-round selections to an already large pile of them. The Giants now hold the first five selections in the draft, and 11 of the first 14 picks. They also have pick 56, but may well be done by then.
Their dominance of the early order may, however, help the clubs holding picks from around 15-20. To ensure it gets a variety of player types, GWS may have to pick one or two tall players a little earlier than they would normally be drafted.
This may mean a few good midfielders get pushed down the order to clubs like Richmond, the Dockers, the Bulldogs and Essendon.
Monster forward Jonathon Patton, midfielders Stephen Coniglio and Dom Tyson and defender Matthew Buntine appear likely top-five picks, while the Giants may choose ruckman Billy Longer in the top five to keep him out of Port Adelaide's clutches.
Onballers Chad Wingard, Will Hoskin-Elliott and Toby Greene also appear in top eight or 10 contention, with the likes of onballers Liam Sumner, Elliott Kavanagh and Devon Smith, talls Adam Tomlinson, Shane Kersten and Nic Haynes and running back Sam Docherty also around the top 12-14 mark.
The draft will be held in western Sydney on the Thursday night of November 24, with the preseason and rookie drafts to take place on December 13.

Hmmm
-
As we have no rookies left how can we only have 2 fresh picks?
-
Rookies are selected in the Pre Season Draft not the National Draft which is what this articles about.

if emma is on the mark then we will be upgrading miller.

Ever thought they will leave a pick for the PSD?
Uncontracted player who doesn't nominate for the Nat Draft like Houli did last year - we always leave one pick for the PSD
Reading far too much into it folks IMHO
-
Well if we've judged the depth of draft correctly then two choices will be wise. Teams such as the Saints, with a large amount of picks, will be using a great deal of hope and prayer if they intend on using their later choices. A lottery at best and history shows that the majority of the later picks in any draft fail let alone a weak draft.
I have been very impressed by the professional and seemingly, well researched/educated manner in which we have approached the recruitment period over the past few years. This is only magnified given the complications the introduction of the two new teams and the consessions they have been granted.
Well played Tigers :clapping

Think Emma is basing that ASSumption on the delistings so far.
Would not be surprised to see 1-2 more cut or a retirement in the next few weeks.

The Goo may be one of them....Any other likely contenders?

Thursfield.
Webberley.
Moore.

I agree with you there, Gerks. Blair Hartley said in the chat session ...
How deep in the draft will the tigers be going ?pick 79 seems pretty late.
We are still yet to determine how many picks we will have, as final list lodgement is not due until Mid-November.
So, I'm assuming that they're giving some time for Kel Moore and Dan Conners to prove their fitness or they're still evaluating some other uncontracted players, who I assume could only be Thursty or Webbers.
Could it be a decision between Kel and Thursty?

So in effect we traded Mitch Morton for a pick in PSD?
I guess our hands were tied if Mitch wanted to go and no one wanted him!?

Surely Moore is cooked enough that they have to go with Will, who was putting together some form back half of the year.
I'd also delist then rookie Webberley.

Yes, but he's contracted for next year
-
He will have been here 5 years next year and has about 5 games under his belt. How the eff does that happen.

Dane Swan only played about 20 games in his first 4 years ;D ;D

Gourdis!! He will be the next Swan ;) ;D ;D

:lol

I rate Webberley and would be surprised if he got delisted. I think Moore will retire and Gourdis may get delisted before the draft
-
goo and moore could very well be cut...webberely would have to be safe
-
Either of you see Webberley playing much of a role when we're any good? TSL is the level Webbers dominates at, not AFL.
-
2 picks is not enough, interesting tacic Geelong have done, drop positions but increase the number of draft picks under 40 they have.
Maybe we ought to look into some similar tactics, they have produced players like Paul Chapman from pick 31, maybe two PC's is better than one Jack Reiwoldt? I wonder if it depends on the state of the rest of your list, hmmm.

apparently dane swan only played 20 games in first 4 years :lol...i actually think webbers should have had more opportunities, he has ability, handles it clean and can use it...

Moore a year to run on his contract i think

No doubt we tried to offload a McGuane or Connors for another pick inside the top 50 but not surprisingly no takers. Dan apparently failed a medical test when Adelaide looked at him according to Tas.
Still two picks inside the 'first' round is better than most clubs GWS aside. FJ and the recruiting staff should still be able to find two good kids if they are doing their job properly.

This is Emma Quayle's top 15:
Patton
Coniglio
Tyson
Buntine
Longer
Wingard
Hoskin-Elliott
Greene
Sumner
Kavanagh
Devon Smith
Tomlinson
Kersten
Haynes
Docherty
The interesting point is this line from her article: "This may mean a few good midfielders get pushed down the order to clubs like Richmond, the Dockers, the Bulldogs and Essendon."

Thursfield.
Webberley.
Moore.
My first post on here...
I think we will keepo all three. Thursfield had a great last half of the season. Moore hopefully will come good.... and Webberley has shown bits that he might end up a player. He just needs to string a few games together.
-
I actually agree on Webbers, he can play, needs to build his tank up.
-
He already has a great tank. He's just not good enough
-

I agree he has a good tank, needs to use the ball better by foot. Kicks long to a contest out of our favour too often. Thats mental so that can be improved I reckon.

Other posts say Moore is unlikely to recover fully. We shall see.

I thought they were using him as a sub coz he wasn't running out games. He seemed to do well when they used him like this.

Webbers is not strong enough. If he has the frame to fill out, then he hasn't filled out enough. If he hasn't got the frame to fill out, then he's too small.
-
just an idea but if we were to use say pick 55 73 and psd why wouldnt we target a mature player or two just like we did with webberley and nason to seasons ago. regardless of how they have worked out it was a good process we went thru.
webberley and nason were actually upgrades on poorly skilled players, why not attempt to raise the bar again. we took them after actually useing picks early and a decent amount of picks in the nd.
just my opinion but we have a few players at coburg who would be possible upgrades on webberley, nick carnell would be for sure and someone like willie wheeler would be well worth giving a go to.
kyle horsley from subiaco would be better than many on our list and tom lee from claremont still only 20 is well worth giving a go to in the psd if he lasts that long. and thats the thing i dont know if any of them will last to the rookie draft.
we focus in on just kids but one has to ask does it have to be this way this yr.
as far as i can gather the only ones who are not contracted are thursfield and webberley. if we use another pick one would think one of them would have to be gone.
i believe we also have the option of putting newman onto the vets list so we may not actually have to cut a player if we do use pick 55.i think this is the only thing that will save one of them if not both.
-
there ya go then. just read thursfield has retired so we will use at least 3 picks. i hope we use all three 15 26 55 on kids and at the least the psd on say horsley by putting newman on the vets list. perhaps then if moore also retires we can use pick 73 as well on carnell or similar type.
-
I agree Claw, only drama with Newy on vets list is we may struggle to hit 92.5% of TPP

Doesn't every team have to pay 100% of the salary cap now? I thought with the new agreement it changed. Finey said something like that on SEN or was it Greg Denham?

The CBA isn't finalised (signed off) so that isn't set in stone yet, but IIRC the AFLPA (read greed central ;D) certainly did want it as a condition of the new agreement or at least the minimum amount required to be paid lifted closer to 97% of the cap

If clubs have to pay 100% of salary cap I could see alot more players getting shorter contracts. So they can move wages around to make room for new players traded in or players that have earn't a raise.

Certainly agree with that; especially in light of free angency coming in as well

Lol and who said reporters dont visit forums? :lol :lol :lol

I think we should pay 100% of the cap every year as a club policy regardless of the rules to reward the young warriors who wear the Yellow and Black.
They are all doing their best for us.
-
This is Correct :thumbsup It is probably why McGuane hasn't tried harder the last 2 years, only being paid $450k a season is pittance! $650 to $850K per year is more apt for a young guy who has promised so much.
