Walls has given a list of the three most important players at each club. For the Tiges he chose Browny, Johnno and Richo. I would've thought last year was a perfect example of how badly we miss Cogs when he isn't there ::).

In terms of damage, who are your three radicals?

Every club has players who are extremely important because they have qualities not easy to replace. When they don't play, their team suffers. Who are they? Walls nominates his three most valuable players at each club.
Who is your team's most valuable player? At Carlton, is it captain Anthony Koutoufides? Kouta is his club's and probably the AFL's highest-paid player, but I wouldn't rate him in the Blues' three most valuable.
Nor do I put Collingwood captain and champion Nathan Buckley in the Magpies' top three.
Some players are valuable because they are match-winners. They make the difference when it comes to kicking a winning score, such as Essendon's Matthew Lloyd and Port's Warren Tredrea. Others save games. Geelong's Matthew Scarlett is a prime example. Some create opportunities for teammates, such as Jeff White and Peter Everitt with their ruck nous.
Michael Voss, Mark Ricciuto and James Hird repeatedly show the way and the likes of Simon Black, Scott West and Cameron Ling amass so many disposals they can't be ignored.
These players are extremely valuable because they have qualities that are not easy to replace. When they don't play, their team suffers.

Nathan Brown is without doubt the classiest player on the list and under Terry Wallace's guidance will be the most valuable, be it around the goals or in the midfield. Kane Johnson's toughness and committed play for the team work ethic sets an outstanding example for team-mates and Matthew Richardson, as potentially the team's leading goalkicker and occasional matchwinner, sneaks in for third MVP.

To be able to pencil in Matthew Scarlett, the best full-back in the land, each week is a luxury that coach Mark Thompson doesn't take for granted. High-possession midfielder Cameron Ling is another who can't be replaced as his ability to beat the best and get plenty of leather himself is unique. Brad Ottens hasn't played a game for Geelong but knowing what he can deliver could turn a handy team into a premiership threat.

For anyone who was at the practise game on saturday would be able to agree that Cogs is an integral part of our midfield and team as a whole. It was great to see him crashing the packs and picking up plenty of the ball through out the game. One thing that sticks in my mind from Saturday is a mark he took backing into a back in our backline, with no fear for himself. He didnt take his eyes off the ball for one minute and had about 5-6 players closing down on him fast as they approached to contest the mark. Not for one minute did Cogs not look like taking the mark.
If he plays most of the games this season he WILL win our B&F this season.

If Otto is included for the Cats then Gas should be in our 3. After last year both starting 2005 a long way off their AA form from 4 years ago ::).

From round 14 onwards Browny was quiet carrying a groin? injury. He's been fairly quiet over preseason too. Hopefully that was just due to coming back from injury a few weeks back and he'll be ready to go come round 1.

Giving Walls the benefit of the doubt, maybe the rating was because of injury. Otherwise, how anyone could leave him out of our best 3 players would be mind boggling. His ability to find the footy is amazing and the circumstances under which he gets possession sometimes is just awesome to see. In a good team, his influence on a game could be simply awesome.
In 2002 and 2003 he was a virtual lone-hand at times and a highlights reel all on his own. That he was in such a poor team meant much of his efforts went unrewarded. How some of those around him couldn’t be inspired by some of his efforts just led me to think that maybe some of them needed to check if they still had a pulse.

When mentally on song Richo would be in our top 3 MVPs easily but I don't reckon he has to be in the side for us to play well. Our best game from a skill and teamwork POV last year IMO was the Brisbane match without Richo when Sarge kicked 6 at FF even though we lost in the end. Also in a couple of games when Richo's kicked 1.6 it was more soul-destroying for the efforts of those upfield.

Couldn't agree more Ox - and those thoughts came to the fore when i saw the Pies game and watching some of the older players and thinking this is the same old stuff again. The excitement came from the kids and those who i had wiped off as being no good coming good.
At the moment, it's Johnston, Brown and probably Bowden, but i reckon by end of year we will have the likes of Cogs, Tambo, Deledio and Jackson overtaking them. And the way Hyde is going, who knows.
