McCarthy hopes for a new home
Jon Pierik
November 2, 2011
FORMER Collingwood midfielder John McCarthy is likely to find a new home next season, with at least two Melbourne-based clubs interested in him.
McCarthy was delisted by the Magpies this week, after failing to broker a suitable trade for him last month.
His manager, Ned Guy, said McCarthy, who managed only 18 matches in four seasons with the Magpies, had also attracted the eye of an interstate club.
''He has met with a couple of clubs. We will sit down and work out whether it's best to go through the national or the pre-season draft to try and get him to where he wants to be, wherever that may be,'' Guy said yesterday.
''There is certainly some strong interest in him. He will have a good future somewhere.''
Guy would not disclose the clubs involved. But it's understood Richmond and Port Adelaide are among those who have shown interest. Greater Western Sydney could also be an option.
''He is just looking for an opportunity,'' Guy said. ''He was in a pretty strong midfield, fortunately and unfortunately, and probably got starved of an opportunity at Collingwood.''
McCarthy, named as an emergency in last year's replayed grand final, played eight games this year.
Guy said the Magpies, dealing with salary-cap pressures, had worked as hard as possible to help McCarthy kick-start his career at a new club.
''They were pretty good about it. Obviously there was a pretty tight squeeze on the cap,'' he said.
''That, combined with the fact they realised he was too good a player to not be playing regular senior footy, they were willing to help him find a new home in trade week.
''Unfortunately, it didn't pan out that way. Most clubs during trade week seemed to be battening down the hatches for next year when free agency and a super draft comes in, which might have prevented him from finding a home in trade week.''

Let me guess, Demons are interested too ::)
-
The HUN = Right on queue ;D
But seriously is he any good :huh
-
If port want him, they'll get him before us.
-
Haven't looked at him too closely in the past but I've just gone through some of his highlights and he can play. He never seems to get caught with the ball, has lightning quick hands and not a bad kick. I think he is probably better than at least 5 or 6 already on our list.
So it's a big YES for me
-
I mentioned this fella a while back on BigFooty and the standard response was "no thanks to Pies' offcuts" and "bad attitude" yet no one had anything to back it up with. Then again, 'bad attitide' is the same standard critical yet safe remark as 'poor kick.'
Would we be in luck if he explicitly states he wants to remain in Victoria?
-
Give him a chance.. we've got nothing to lose on this one.

He was the player tied up in all the rape allegations after the Pies won the flag, I think that's where the "bad attitude" claims come from.

Ah touché. I'll pay that then.
-
Yep remember now, this case was linked with Dayne Beams?? not 100% on that.
Maybe he is worth at least a look, could use a lesser draft pick on him

Bit unfair, who wouldn't be classed as having a bad attitude if measured in those terms?
-
Pass. I haven't see anything in his time at Collingwood worth chasing him for and we've been done the path before of picking up fringe players of top sides who are made to look better by the star players around them. I know he'll be a cheap option last in the draft or PSD but I just don't see him helping us towards becoming a top side. He doesn't fit any need we have as far as the position he plays.

this is crazy stuff :banghead
-
John McWho?
-
this is crazy stuff :banghead
what is 'crazy stuff,'?
The fact that Herald Sun has linked us to a player?
Or the fact that we still havent given Maguane an extended run at full forward?

McCarthy you flog! Can't you read the heading :wallywink
-
Meh either way for me.
Would not use a draft pick on him, and if FJ is genuinely interested, run him thru the rookie & PSD training programme.
If not, next ....
-
He'd fit in at the Saints.
No thanks
