Questions over GWS Scull-duggery

    Michael Warner

    November 15, 2011

TOM Scully's father was offered a six-year contract worth $680,000 to work as a recruiter for Greater Western Sydney in November last year.

The Daily Telegraph has obtained a copy of a "Letter of Offer" to Phil Scully signed by GWS football boss Graeme "Gubby" Allan on November 10, 2010 - 12 months before the contentious deal was made public.

It reveals Scully Sr was guaranteed a job until October 2017 as the club's Melbourne-based recruiting scout on an annual salary of $100,000, with an increase of 5 per cent every year.

The document raises fresh questions about whether Tom Scully agreed to join the expansion club during an AFL-endorsed signing window in November 2010.

GWS has been forced to include Phil Scully's wages in the club's salary cap - an unprecedented ruling based on the finding his hiring was directly related to his son's decision to quit the Demons. On the basis of the Letter of Offer, the Giants will have $680,000 less to spend on players over the next six years.

GWS chairman Tony Shepherd said last month his board knew nothing of Phil Scully's employment as a recruiter until Tom had agreed to join the club in a five-year, $6 million deal, four weeks ago. The AFL said it was first notified of the arrangement at the same time.

Responding to questions about the Scully letter yesterday, a GWS spokesman told The Daily Telegraph: "An offer was made to Phil Scully to join the GWS Giants as a recruiter in November last year. The then chief executive of GWS Dale Holmes was aware of the offer.

"Phil Scully officially accepted the offer last month when his appointment was announced by the club.

"We look forward to Phil making a valuable contribution to the club in his role as a recruiter based in Melbourne given his previous experience as a recruiter with the Sydney Swans."

Holmes was cut free as Giants CEO on the same day it was revealed that Phil Scully had been employed by the club as a full-time recruiter on October 27. Scully's second season at Melbourne was overshadowed by constant speculation that he would leave the club in favour of a massive financial lure.

The 20-year-old midfielder "officially" walked out on the club on September 12 this year.

He maintains that his decision to leave was only made at the conclusion of this season - not during the signing "window" in November 2010 as suspected by many in the football industry.

Not sure why this a big deal.

The old man was a scout for Sydney long before his boy was a potential draftee.

I think the "Big Deal" part is the offer was accepted and agreed to 12 months before Scully jr officially announced he was leaving.
Makes it look like there was no decision to be made, he was always going to go :lol

Why though?

I didn't hear anyone saying Scully will try and get traded to Sydney when his old man worked there.

Correct he was working for Sydney this year

I reckon the fact the AFL have made GWS (depsite GWS saying it was their idea) include Scully Snr's wage in their Salary Cap shows there is something decidely dodgy regarding this whole Scully "saga"

They were talking about it this morning on SEN and that was one of the questions/discussion points. Blinks Watson said that $100k for a recruiter was normal and that a head recruiter would get alot more than $100k ayear  :-\

HUN reported Scully Snr's starting wage is $100k for 2012 with guaranteed 5% increases for every year of the contract to take it up to $680k over the 6 years

It's the 6 years bit that is the issue to, funny how it's the same length as Jnr Scully's

You've got to love the squealing from Eddie over the past week or so about GWS going after Pendlebury. It was alright for the Pies over the years to poach other clubs stars and young guns (Cloke, Raines, A.Rocca, Buckley) with offers of big $$$ yet they might cop some of their own medicine and it's "war"  :wallywink. What goes around comes around again!
