What's the harm of pushing Newman into the veterans list?
Salary cap could be a problem. On the vets' list only half of Newy's salary counts towards the salary cap and that could push us under the minimum 92.5% of the salary cap every club needs to pay.

From a list management point of view it would be better to have a few salary cap "fillers" this year which can then be freed up from 2013 onwards for free agency as well as to use to keep our young guns who will want more money as they reach their prime years.

Examples of salary cap fillers would be:
* Keeping Newy on our senior list for another year so his full salary counts towards our 2012 salary cap
* Having Goo's salary for next year of his contract count towards our 2012 salary cap even if he departs now
* Front-loading contracts of Cotch, Dusty, etc.... so you pay them more now and not so much in subsequent years so our salary cap doesn't become a problem in future years.

Gourdis hasn't been sighted at training yet, so I suggest there's our PSD spot.

well, i haven't sighted anyone at training yet .

is this 'unsighted at training' from someone who attends lots of training sessions, or based on the fact that gourdis (along with others  ::)  ) has not been seen in any of the training pics or video?

Someone asked the same thing of Goudis on BF when the footage of McCarthy training was up and Stig said something like "Goudis is there. Can't get photos/videos of everyone." something like that. On my phone at the moment so it's too cumbersome to search but I think it might be early in the McCarthy permission to train thread.

What's the harm of pushing Newman into the veterans list?

Paying McCarthy would certainly help make a bit of ground too. Could even bump it a smidgen to scare off Port from drafting a player who doesn't want to be there and match the pay too.

Why would you delist anyone now? why wouldnt u have done it prior to the draft.  i would assume goo is staying.  if he does go it says a bit about how uncertain the footy dept is.

I would be very happy if this occurs: David Gourdis is delisted, Port Adelaide draft McCarthy and we draft a 18 year old half forward type.

Will be barracking for Port Adelaide to draft McCarthy!

2

we need a couple of mid sized forwards around the 186cm to 189cm who can run with pace, posses some nice skills and become goal kicking half forwards.

HUN now reporting this morning that Port are interested in Leon Davis (again) if the "price is right" - they need a "name" so IMO they'll go for Leon

Would think it is a given McCarthy will wind up at the Tiges  ;D

Here's the article online:

Port Adelaide keen on Leon Davis

    by: Jon Ralph
    From: Herald Sun
    November 28, 2011

RICHMOND will be praying Port Adelaide agrees to financial terms with Leon Davis in coming weeks, clearing the path for the Tigers to swoop on ex-Pie John McCarthy.

A handful of experienced players are likely to get to their preferred homes in December 13's pre-season draft, with Davis, McCarthy and former Saints defender Zac Dawson heading the list.

Davis looked no chance to get to Port Adelaide, but the Power passed on its last national draft pick and has confirmed it wants Davis at the right price.

It has also spoken to McCarthy, who is training at Richmond, and former Adelaide and Carlton midfielder Darren Pfeiffer.

Should Port Adelaide take Davis, it would mean McCarthy would get through to Richmond's selection.

Melbourne said it would not take a pre-season pick, which means Richmond's pick No.7 now becomes the sixth selection.

GWS has the first pick in the pre-season and rookie drafts, but said yesterday it was yet to decide if it would take a pre-season pick.

Port Adelaide football manager Peter Rohde said in Adelaide this weekend Davis was a wanted player.

"Leon Davis is on the agenda," he said.

"There's been a lot of talk about Davis but, in our contact with him and his management, the financial (demands) were well and truly outside of our capabilities."

Former St Kilda defender Dawson will begin training with Fremantle tomorrow, four weeks after the Herald Sun revealed he was leaving the Saints.

The Dockers seem likely to take former Collingwood forward Brad Dick in the rookie draft, which immediately follows the pre-season draft.

Austin Wonaeamirri, Nathan Ablett and Brendan Fevola are available in the pre-season draft, but seem to have little interest.

A veteran Inside the list means he is one of 38 on the senior list

If he was listed Outside the senior list he wouldn't be counted as one of the 38 but it would mean you lose 1 rookie spot

To be honest who knows why they've done it  ;D

They must have 38 senior listed players.

They want to draft McCarthy

They need a free spot to draft McCarthy, could have done it with moving Newman to veterans list outside the senior list but have chosen not too
