Who now does Mikes top 50??
Who cares about anyone's top 50.
It would have more credibility if it was a consensus of maybe all their footy writers. But one person's opinion doesn't hold much cred with me.

Not retiring as such stepping down as Cheif Footy writer for the HUN but he will still be a "contributor" and the Top 50 will remain

From the HUN:

Mike Sheahan steps down as chief football writer for the Herald Sun
From: Herald Sun November 29, 2011 9:24AM

MIKE Sheahan is stepping down as chief football writer for the Herald Sun after 18 years.
Sheahan, 64, said yesterday he cherished his time at Australia’s biggest daily newspaper.

“I have been exceedingly lucky to have spent more than 40 years on Melbourne metropolitan papers covering the game I love,” he said yesterday.

The multi-award-winning journalist will maintain a close relationship with the Herald Sun as a contributor to the sports pages next year.

Readers can still look forward to Sheahan’s popular Top 50 AFL player lists next season.

HWT editor-in-chief Phil Gardner said Sheahan was the complete journalist.

“Mike is one of Australia’s greatest sport journalists,” he said.

“He is a rare combination of a great news breaker who can write clearly-understood analysis that is essential reading for everybody in football.”

Sheahan took over from Alf Brown as chief football writer of the Herald in 1979.

He left to work at the AFL in 1985 and was at the Sunday Age from 1989-93 before returning to the Herald Sun.

May have posted this before, but....

a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away away ( Melbourne actually) I saw a 'on the couch' style show that had Mike, Special bruce and Mal blight. One night they had Mathew on as a guest and the discussion between him and blight was as good a football discussion as you will hear (except on OER that is  ;D).

Bruce being the consummate professional would prompt with questions or statements and then sit back and listen to what these two had to say.

Mike on the other hand constantly interjected with his own opinions and observations, trying to participate in the conversation. Blight and matheews basically ignored him, but that didnt stop his foolish ways.

That was when i first appreciated what a idiot he actually is.

He's just another journalist among the many with an over-inflated opinion of themselves.
He probably rates in the overall scheme of things, but to what degree.  Great?  Don't think so.  Just a plodder who was there at the right time with journalists becoming TV stars as well.
What are his achievements exactly apart from the daily reporting of AFL news?
Has he influenced younger journalists?  Maybe, who knows, but it's not greatly apparent.
Well done Mike in doing what most of us all do daily - our jobs!

Interesting that all that jackston can say about Mikey is that he is a good bloke, not that he is a good journalist or knows a lot about football.

Deep, deep, down he must know.....

Mike Sheehan took from me my "Special purpose". I once had an innocent and somewhat naive faith in sports Journalists, hanging on their every word, but Sheehan's bias and self proclaimed agendas have sullied me and now I cross the street whenever I see one. Thank God for support groups like OER as they make me feel like I am not alone anymore.
