Light Tiger gets supersized
By Adam McNicol
Tue 29 Nov, 2011
MIDFIELDER Shane Edwards has emerged as the star performer in the early weeks of Richmond's pre-season.
The 23-year-old, who has played 89 games in five seasons, impressed his coaches and teammates by gaining strength and fitness during the past month.
"[Putting weight on] was a focus for a lot of the guys, the skinnier guys," Tigers skipper Chris Newman said before the playing squad departed for a week-long training camp in the United States.
"Shane Edwards has put a lot of time and effort into his body-weight. I think he's come back about three or four kilos heavier."
After coming to prominence while playing in the juniors with South Australian club North Adelaide, Edwards was recruited by Richmond with selection 26 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft.
Since then he has shown plenty of talent, but his light frame has made it difficult for him to compete against the competition's bigger bodies.
But that could change next season.
"He's looking very big at the moment, and he's just learning to deal with carrying that extra weight," Newman said.
"There's no doubt that he's put all the hard work in. Hopefully it pays off for him."
The extra bulk has not restricted Edwards' aerobic capacity at all, if his performance in the club's 3.8km time-trial two weeks ago is any guide.
In that hit-out he finished fourth behind speedy wingman Matthew White.
Richmond ended its 2011 campaign in 12th place on the ladder, having notched eight wins and a draw from 22 starts.
Given it is now a decade since the Tigers last made the finals, there will be plenty of pressure on the club to break into the top eight in 2012.
"No doubt we need to keep making improvement and inroads," Newman said.
"We are a young side and a developing side, and we have used that over the last few years [to keep expectations in check].
"But there's no doubt we're extremely confident in where we're at."

Um the other pre-seasons......excuse maker..... ;D......gee was it that interrupted it made him kick to the opposition.....
Anyway, like I said, good luck to him I hope he improves, no excuses now eh, full pre-season.....so far.
-
agree NO EXCUSES!! ;D
hopefully he's on the roids and starts whacking blokes when he effs up a kick
-
Every club puts out media releases about how the latest preseason is the toughest yet and everyone is looking fitter, faster and stronger. Essendon seems to produce them every second day since Hird has been coach :sleep. For us though the real proof of being bigger and stronger will come round 1 against Carlton. The Blues have pushed us aside far too easily and made us look like witches hats over the past 3 years.
-
agree with MT
-
The blues have also run rings around us leaving us in their wake, like witches hats, in the last three years
-
never forget reading year after year how "Tambling was training the house down"
Edwards LMFAO at 3kgs.
Flyweight now upgraded to a featherweight yay yay
-
In all seriousness I really do blame our fitness and conditioning people for this on going problem
other clubs can draft a lean player and then over 2-3 years can bulk them up, get muscle on them
Why can't we?
I've recently just finished reading Mick Malthouse's book that he co-wrote with David Buttifant. Was absolutely shocked to read that Buttifant was interviewed by the Tigers to be our head of fitness back when Frawley was coach and that he knocked us back.
All because of the way Tony Jewell interviewed him (Jewell was Footy Director back then). After reading his CV Jewell asked him when did he play at Richmond?
Answer = when Jewell as coach the 2nd time - TJ dind't remember him at the point Buttifant thought this club isn't for me
Oh what could have been ;D
-
Edwards LMFAO at 3kgs.
Flyweight now upgraded to a featherweight yay yay
Newman actually said "3, 4, or 5 kilos"
but then he's not Matt Hornsby
5 kegs would be a decent effort if he can keep it on

To be fair, if Edwards has put on 4kgs then that makes him exactly the same height and weight as one Chris Newman. :rollin

;D but Newman has muscle, Edwards may have put on a few Kgs but does that = muscle :-\
When my mate Billy Nicholls played for the Tiges he was the same weight & height as Michael Voss but was considered a porky
Not fair to compare :rollin
-
well i doubt he has come back with a gut
-
I would assume it is muscle . . . 3-4kgs in fat is hardly something to talk about, could do that with a couple of trips to McDonalds :rollin
-
Funny thread.
People who haven't seen him passing comment.
He has changed his body shape quite a bit. His upper body (shoulders and arms) are noticeably bigger.
At first glance he looks completely different.
-
To be honest I don't think everyone on here has been serious.
-
great now some blues idiot like mitch robinson will take it on themselves to run through shed in rd1. i hope shed keeps his feet.

correct WP.
I remember asking Miller one day the same thing and he couldnt answer my question, just saying the guys are young they will grow give them time.
Well Thursfield, amongst others are still a toothpick now as they were when they started. Its only since Dimma has come on board that we have started to see some change, physically and mentally. Vickery, King etc etc Tackling has improved but still an area we need to get better.
Dale Thomas proves you dont have to be a beefcake to tackle an opponent. Players like Edwards get pushed aside almost at every contest by bigger bodied players.
Its about time the club woke up to themselves. The amount of times i see his and other lightweights get thrown around
was starting to get frustrating.
Look at Jack Darling. In 1 season at the Eagles he his already bigger in size than most of our defenders, bar Rance
I guess at the end of the day what do you expect if a club only hires a p/t weights coach as we did for so many years.

A couple of rounds of soggy biscuit with the conditioning staff and and he'll be back to 57 kilos for the season opener.
10 kilos or stfu.

LOL @ Edwards putting on half a stone and it being news.
half a stuffing stone

Well I am happy to give him another go....I mean c'mon he has only had 5 YEARS IN THE SYSTEM AT THE CLUB TO BEEF THE stuff UP.........and after 5 years he has added 1-2-3-4-5 kilo's :lol
This must be his last shot though, he either has to have a blinder of a year or he is gone. Honestly he can't just have a average year, not after 5 years in the system....
Good luck Edwards me old mate....keep them kilo's on!!!!!!
-
alternatively,half a career,half a stone.
I like the guy but size aside,he still has brain fades,a turnover rate nearly as bad as foley and sometimes his feet seem to go to sleep just as he kicks the ball.
Got some flashy qualities but needs eat a hippo.

Eddy frustrates the poo out of me. Some talent but also some glaring weaknesses.
Needs to step up this year or he is cactus.
-
agree NO EXCUSES!! ;D
hopefully he's on the roids and starts whacking blokes when he effs up a kick
LOL at least it'd be entertaining. A US Grid Iron player once said he'd go on the roids for 12 weeks and add 10 kilos (My memory is as stuffed a Tony Jewels)

That would be the only way you would be adding 10kg in 12 weeks, lol, serious juice cycle.

At the rate he is going I figure this is roughly what "Shed" will look like by the start of the season :whistle :whistle

Edwards was weighed with a protein shake from KFC in one hand, and a Choc Malt Big M in the other.
Oh and kept his 2kg ankle weights on under the trackies.

-
Has finally graduated to the body of a pre-pubescent Swedish boy.
-
Good luck Shane...it's just the legs.....they are too small, no muscle definition..oh well hope he works in well.

heard he came back from adelaide a few ounces heavier
If he was made of gold he be worth something then :lol
-
Good luck Shane...it's just the legs.....they are too small, no muscle definition..oh well hope he works in well.
this is correct WAT. His build looks all wrong, starting to look a bit like mcguanes- top heavy and unbalanced.
If he losses any speed or agility he is finito, as he cannot afford to lose what "strengths" he has

His arms are so big he can't fit through a door. He will have to go in sideways.
He is bloody huge.
And I am.
