Chris Newman has been reappointed Richmond’s captain for the 2012 season, with Trent Cotchin to be his deputy.

I'm glad they decided to leave Newman in the role. Good player, great leader and very media savvy. He really has come a long way since the heady days of trying to sack Wallace in 2009.
The club should be commended for sticking with and developing his leadership. What a great role model he has become for young Cotchin.
-
Cotch obviously now designated heir-apparent. 2012 will probably be Newy's last as captain given he's a vet and he will be over 30 by 2013.
I'm guessing the rest of the leadership group will be Lids, Foley, Jack and Dusty.

No brainer. :thumbsup
Possibly next year would love to see Newy step aside for Cotch. :thumbsup

Chris Newman to lead Tigers in 2012
by: Michael Warner in Arizona
From: Herald Sun
December 02, 2011
RICHMOND has resisted the urge to rush rising star Trent Cotchin into the captaincy, reappointing Chris Newman for 2012.
But the handover appears inevitable, with Cotchin, 21, installed as outright vice-captain for the first time.
Coach Damien Hardwick announced the Richmond leadership line-up yesterday at a training camp in Tucson, Arizona.
Newman, 29, one of the AFL's least heralded captains, will lead the Tigers for a fourth consecutive season.
''I always thought he was an outstanding player, even when I was at an opposition club,'' Hardwick said.
"I very much liken him to Richie Vandenberg at Hawthorn.
"He's the captain that this footy club needed. People talk about culture - culture is a derivative of the people that are within your footy club and he epitomises everything we are at the moment.''
Hardwick said Cotchin had emerged as a leader after Newman was injured late last year.
"He stepped up enormously last year,'' he said. "It's amazing - when you put a guy in a little bit above himself you can certainly see whether he rises, and that's what he did.
Newman told the Herald Sun: "I guess when I took over as captain I was overawed and initially felt like I was out of my league a little bit, but I've grown as a person and as a player and see it as a real responsibility, particularly to such a young group.
"It's a lot of pressure, and I'm a fairly emotional person, so I take a lot of responsibility for the things that evolve on the ground, and so you should as captain.''

Good decision

I'm guessing the rest of the leadership group will be Lids, Foley, Jack and Dusty.
As long as Jackson isn't in it I don't really care. Can't have someone so ill disciplined in the leadership group. ;D ;)
Would be surprised if Dusty gets in TBH but do expect one of the younger players to be annointed - not saying I agree but think it will happen ;D

rance ;D

Batch?

Batch is only coming into his 2nd year so maybe a bit too young yet to be considered for the leadership group.

Perhaps Houli then instead. I noticed Bachar and Axel were sitting either of Dimma in the group tour photo over in Arizona.

I wonder how Deledio feels about being skipped over for Cotchin.
I also wonder whether it will hurt us in the long term when free agency comes in the way it hurt Geelong with GAJ.

Depends whether he really wants the role, TBR. I wouldnt be surprised if he didnt. Captaincy is a great honour, of course, but it's also fraught with pressure and responsibility. Maybe, Lids is happy to just focus on his footy and be a 'general' leader at the club.
-
Yeah, I have no idea what he wants Willy, but I could imagine the Cotchamania could make him feel a little under valued.

In an interview during the season Lids was actually asked about it when Cotch was made Captain while Newman was injured and Lids said it was the right choice because he bleived Cotch was going to the be next RFC captain

would love to have seen rance been included as a DVC, has leadership written all over him that kid :shh

But they havne't finalised the leadership group BJ so.................. ;D

Does anyone know enough about the real Lids to know how he feels about this though?
It's hard to tell from the public comments he makes because he will toe the company line.

Have to take him on face value TBR - I think you are wanting an issue to be there when there isn't one :thumbsup

No, not at all WP, I just think it is a risky time for the club with Deledio, and I can see how he might have a damaged ego in regards to this.
He was talked about several years ago as being a potential captain and now the direction has changed.
He already has the support of the defence force.

I suppose that's the difference TBR, I don't see it as a "risky time" regarding Deledio.
I don't think he is going anywhere, I am not worried about him going anywhere, I have always believeed and still do he will re-sign with the Tigers. So I don't think the vice captaincy or captaincy makes an iota of difference to be honest

I think Cotch must be elcapitano next year, I have said it before we need a 10 year Captain.

Interesting theory but Why??

I think if you look back at successful clubs and they were very stable with long term captains....Sticks, Woosha, Voss, the list goes on. I don't think we have had stability like that for a while, even Knights should have been appointed earlier for mine.......just my take on it.

Gee there's a new one smoke......yawn.....

Has Cotchin had a hip scrap which may limit his pre-season ?
-
I also worry we have not looked outside the square for a Captain.
A young man who enjoys cheese toasties and randon anonymous violence against women isn't even considered and that is a great shame.

BrettDeledio03 Brett Deledio
Just at LAX preparing for the long flight home. Was a good trip, hope we can come back nxt yr.
Taken from his twitter, really can't see him leaving pending disaster.
He loves it at Richmond and all the boys seem to love him as well and we are headed up at last it would appear.

yep, just going to join full duties next week - 2 of our 4 stars in the making have had limited preseason (Cotch & Reiwoldt)
